My Hutchinson Connections

Dermot Hutchinson is my brother in law.
HOUSTON (also Huston, Hutcheson, Hutchinson, MacCutcheon and MacQuiston)
These names are interlinked in that they all derive ultimately from the personal name Hugh and were also the names of septs of Clan Donald.
Many, if not a majority, of the Houstons of Ulster are not of this clan, however. The Houstons of Lanarkshire descend from the 12th century Hugh de Paduinan (Padinan in the east of the shire). He received a grant of the lands of Kilpeter in the west of the shire. By a century or so later these lands had come to be called Huston (Hugh's place)and the family took the name de Hustone. It is thought that the Houstons of Craigs Castle in South Antrim and Castlestewart in Co. Tyrone are of this connection and were also forefathers of General Sam Houston, 1793-1863, commander in chief of the Texan forces in the Texan War of Independence (1826). He was also President of Texas and later a US senator.
Hutchinson and Hutcheson are most numerous in counties Derry, Antrim and Down. Elizabeth Hutchinson from Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim, was the mother of Andrew Jackson, seventh president of the USA.
