My Michael W. Caughey

My mother Sarah Anne Purdy was born on 11 August 1897 in Clones, Co. Monaghan, Ireland. She was baptised on 12 August 1897 in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Clones, Co. Monaghan. She died in the City Hospital, Belfast, Co. Antrim, Ireland on 27 January 1981 and was buried in Clones, Co. Monaghan on 29 January 1981. A black marble headstone inscribed "The Purdy Family of Annalore" marks her family grave. Mother was 82 when she died.

My mother married my father Samuel Caughey on 10 October 1922 in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Clones, Co. Monaghan, Ireland. He was a driver in the Irish National Army at that time.

Her parents:
Father: Johnston Purdy, born 1861 in Clonwin, Co. Fermanagh, died 1912 in Clones, Co. Monaghan. He was a gasworker in Clones Gasworks, Gashouse Lane.
Mother: Mary Joanna Bushell, born Oakfield, Co. Fermanagh, 18 December 1865. Died 6 February 1922, Clones, Co. Monaghan. She was a shopkeeper and kept "fighting cocks".

Johnston was 23 when he married, 51 when he died and Mary was 18 when she married and 56 when she died. They lived at Annalore a few miles outside Clones and later in Annalore Street, Clones.

Their other children:
John Purdy died at 88 years of age.
Born 1885 in Clones. Died 19 December 1973 in St. Davnet's Hospital, Monaghan town, buried in Clones.

Francis Purdy died at age 81.
Born 1887 in Clones, Co. Monaghan. Died in St. Davnet's Hospital, Monaghan 20 December 1968. Buried in Clones.

Edward Purdy died at age 88.
Born 9 August 1892 in Clones. Died 3 May 1981 in London. Buried in Clones.

Mary Purdy died at age 29.
Born c. 1893 in Clones. Died in Toronto, Canada, 11 Jan 1922. Buried in Canada. She married a man called Bushell who was a butcher.

Michael Purdy died at age 68.
Born 20 June 1895 in Clones. Baptised 22 Jan 1895 at the Sacred Heart Church, Clones.Died 13 Feb. 1964 in Belfast.Buried in Milltown Cemetery, Belfast. He was a green grocer. He married Mary Ellen Mc Manus on 28 Jan. 1918 at the Sacred Heart Church, Clones.


PURDY PURDIE

Apparently a nickname given to someone (presumabley someone Anglo-Norman) who habitually explained "Pour Dieu" ! or "Pardiew"! makes this theory less absurd. The surname is not necessarily Scotts and may have originated in Normandy.
