The history of the John Joe Springs Ranch
by Dorothy Livingston nee Tennant
Feb 15 1981 at Hot Springs Montana

This ranch is located about 8 miles SW of the town of Milk River Alberta Canada. Its first occupant was 2 Frenchmen names John & Joe (squatters), They sold to Thomas Emmet Tennant in 1900 who came from North Dakota US, born and raised in London Ontario, and spent his young years in Winnipeg Man.
After his marriage he had a job as conductor in a freight train and lived in North Dakota. He moved West and went in partnership with his brother in law, P H Buckley. Tennant homesteaded the land and took a premption North of the homestead. He put up a house from the marrow gage railroad ties. He dug out space in the bank to make the 1sr house warmer. The family 3 children and wife Mary came the fall of 1900. He also dug space for a good root cellar and chicken house. He built the farm & shed & correls of hte narrow gage ties also. The roofs were barked wire cris cross and prairie hay spread over the wire. Hay was plentiful and good quality.
There were no fences so the cattle roamed at will. In the winter of 1906 a very bad storm hit and the cattle loss was many, the mange was bothering the cattle so a dipping vat was built east of the correls and any cattle that was in the country was brought to the Tennant's vat. The water was piped from the spring to the vat and warmed with a circulating heater fired with coal. The only help in constructing this vat was Phily Rodgers a young man from England.
When the settlers started taking up homesteads in 1.17 and other townships, Tennant leased 5000 ac. to the East of the homestead. In the year 1911 all the cattle were sold and sheep bought. A large shed 100 x 100 and several smaller ones were built. The price of wool and lambs was good at that time and the ranch prospered. In 1914 a large 14 roomed house was built. A governess was hired and several children of the farm families came to school at the ranch. There was no church closer than Coutts, so the priest Father Bidault said mass at the Tennant Ranch and people came from miles to attend. The priest first came with horse 6 buggy and later had a model T Ford.
In 1916 a vat for dipping sheep was built 100 yards or so East of the ever running spring, and anyone who had sheep at the time brought them to the ranch to be dipped for ticks. There was lots of grazing land and no fences exept the Mackie fence which ran east of the homestead, as more homesteads were taken up the lease had to be fenced the Hudson Bay section on the west along with the lease made enough grazing for 2500 head of sheep. Great losses were suffered the winter of 1918 & 19. The war was on and the prices were good, but in 1921 the prices dropped on sheep and wood, and Tennants health failed and in June he passed away. Before his death he had bought the quarter north of mike Angyl and the 1/4 known as the Kitts place and the 1/2 known as the Thompson place east of the John Joe School. An uncle of Tennants came from Detroit and took up a homestead west of the ranch. He was no farmer, so worked on the ranch and Tennant farmed his 1/2 section. When he got too old to work he went back to Detroit and lived with his sisster until his death. The school section north of the east side of the lease was added to the ranch land and was known as Red Lake. It grew enough hay to supply the stock on the ranch. The whole of the township west drained into the lake and some years didn't dry up enough to get in the hay. A large shed 100 x 100 was built on the shore of Red Lake and served as a summer camp for sheep.
Mrs Tennant and family tried to keep the ranch paying but with the head of the household gone they failed.
Most of the sheep and cattle were sold as the partner wanted to get his money so the partnership was disolved. Buckley sold the Merricks place to Mike Angyl, the Kitts place to Bill Linderman. 1/2 the lease and Red Lake 3/4 to Oscar Swanson. The Joe Keenan place to John Obbagy.
Mrs Tennants brother Lambert Fielding tried to make the ranch pay but was no rancher so in 1928 she sold the remaining stock and she and her son Barney lived there for the next 10 yrs. In 1938 she moved into a small house in Milk River owned by Livingstons. Clay and Dorothy Livingston nee Tennant moved to the ranch. They ranched there for the next 19 years. In 1954 Livingston took the large old house down, and put up a small one to the west. He raised cattle, shhep and hogs. In 1957 he sold the ranch to John Obbagy and Stene Angyl and moved to Camas Prairie Montana, Then he and Dorothy moved to Hot Springs.
Mrs Tennant spent her winters with her oldest daughter Kitty Minor for a few years, then went into a rest home in Lethbridge until her death in 1963 at the age 95. Barney only son of the Tennants died in 1964 and Kitty passed away in 1971.
