The office is open to the public : Monday to Friday from 9.30 a. m. to 4.00 p. m. and it does not closed for lunch.
The principal records in the Office of the Registrar-General are :
Indexes of Births, Marriages and Deaths (all Ireland 1845-64-1922)
Registers of Births and Deaths registered in the six counties from 1st January 1864.
Registers of Marriages registered in the six counties from 1922.
The registers of Marriages prior to 1922 are in local custody.

There is at the present time a three months waiting list for searches and one may telephone, or call in, to make an appointment. The office will usually take only one researcher a day. Due to staff holidays no researching is allowed during the summer.
Access to registers
The fee which a person must pay in Dublin gives an entitlement to search through the indexes only but not through the register. It is not possible here to get actual sight of the register, you must give a reference number and receive a photocopy (at a fee of ‚1.50 for each entry) of what is contained in the register. In order not to waste money a person would have to be certain of anything found in the index.
In Belfast, you also search through the indexes. On been give a reference number, the staff will then read out the information in the entry to you. They will not allow you to see the entry.
Fortunately, a person is not confined to going to the Belfast or Dublin offices to get access to the indexes or sight of the registers. You have the option to search through the microfilm indexes in the LDS (Mormon) Libraries. Subsequently a person may then get a photocopy of an entry in Dublin or obtain details of an entry in Belfast, or visit the local registration office of the area that he or she may be interested in.
Family Records Centre (FRC), London
The General Register Office for England and Wales is based in Southport (Telephone 00 44 1704 569824). There is a FRC (shared with the Public Records Office) located at St. Catherine's House, 10 Kingsway, London WC2B 6JP, where a person can go through the indexes without fee.
