A Scotish surname meaning son of Henry, their being many septs and families bearing the surname. A small sept held lands in Upper Liddesdale in the Borders. The chief lowland family of the surname were of Fordell in Fifeshire. A branch of the Clan Gunn bears the surname, they are believed to be descendant of Henry, the younger son of George Gunn, a chief of the clan in the fifteenth century. The MacEanruig (anglicised Henderson) of Glencoe are probably descended from Dughall who lived in the early part of the fourteenth century. In 1890 Henderson was principally found in Antrim and Tyrone, and the estimated number of bearers was 3,225.
