Hewitt An English surname: derived from a diminutive of Hugh; occassionally local in origin from residence in a clearing, from Old English hiewett meaning a ‘cutting’ where trees had been cut down. Also a Scottish surname from the former derivation. In 1890 the surname was principally found in Antrim, and Armagh, and the estimated number of bearers was 1,790. In England and Wales in 1996 it was the 236th most numerous surname.
