An English surname derived from Old English hyll. ‘Dweller on a hill’. In 1659 according to Petty, Hill was the principal surname of Antrim. In 1853 Hill was the twenty-fifth most numerous surname in England and Wales, and the estimated number of bearers was 52,200. In 1890 Hill was principally found in Antrim, Dublin and Down, and the estimated number of bearers was 5,280. In the United States it is the 33rd most numerous surname with an estimated 514,250 bearers.  In England and Wales in 1996 it was the 30th most numerous surname. In Scotland in 1995 it was the 81st most numerous surname.
