Hogan, ó hOgáin
A Gaelic surname meaning descendant of ógán, diminutive of óg meaning ‘young’. A sept of the Dál gCais who derived their descent from Cosrach, uncle of Brian Boru. They were seated at Ardcrony, about four miles to the north of Nenagh in Tipperary. A sept of the Corcu Loíghdhe in south-west Cork. In 1890 it was the ninety-first most numerous surname, the estimated number of bearers was 8,600 and was chiefly found in Cork (40 births) and Kerry (21 births). In the United States it is the 489th most numerous surname with an estimated 66,000 bearers.
