Houlihan, Holohan, ó hUallacháin
A Gaelic surname meaning descendant of Uallachán diminutive of uallach meaning ‘proud, arrogant’. There were several septs in Thomand, Cork and Offaly. In 1890 Houlihan was principally found in Kerry, Limerick, Cork and Clare, Holohan in Kilkenny, and the estimated number of bearers was 3,180 (all variants). In the United States it is the 8,190th most numerous surname with an estimated 2,750 bearers.
