Hunt
An English surname from the Old English hunta meaning ‘hunter, huntsman’. MacLysaght suggests that in Connacht that Hunt is used by pseudo-translation for several Irish surnames: Feighney, Feighry and Fey. In 1890 Hunt was principally found in Mayo, Roscommon, Dublin and Waterford, and the estimated number of bearers was 3,400. In the United States it is the 148th most numerous surname with an estimated 173,250 bearers. In England and Wales in 1996 it was the 81st most numerous surname.
