Hyland, ó hAoláin A Gaelic surname ; descendant of Faolán, diminutive of Faol meaning ‘wolf’. A variation of ó Faoláin (See Phelan and Whelan below). In this anglicisation it was common in Laois Offaly, from whence it spread to other parts. In Connacht it is sometimes corrupted to Holland. In 1890 Hyland was principally found in Mayo, Dublin and Laois, and the estimated number of bearers was 2,465. In the United States it is the 4,445th most numerous surname with an estimated 8,250 bearers.
