Hynes, ó hEidhin
A Gaelic surname meaning descendant of Eidhean meaning ‘ivy’. A sept who were chiefs of Ui Fiachrach Aidhne and lords of Aidhne, a district co-extensive with the diocese of Kilmacduagh in Galway. There was also a sept in the neighbourhood of Caherconlish in Limerick. There is an English surname (sometimes Hines) derived from the Middle English hine meaning ‘hind, servant’. In 1890 Hynes was principally found in Galway, Clare, Mayo and Dublin, and the estimated number of bearers was 3,720.
