Little, Lyttle An English surname from the Old English for ‘little’. Also a Scottish surname, they occupied the lower part of Upper Eskdale and a portion of Ewesdale, in Dumfriesshire. The Gaelic ó Beagáin and ó Bigin, has been so anglicised (usually Beggan(e) in Monaghan, and Biggins in Mayo). In 1890 the surname was principally found in Antrim, Dublin and Fermanagh, and the estimated number of bearers was 2,645. In the United States Little is the 226th most numerous surname with an estimated 126,500 bearers. In England and Wales in 1996 it was the 356th most numerous surname.
