Maxwell A Scottish surname, Macus a Saxon Lord was granted land (now called Springwood) on the Tweed in the reign of David I. The lands were called Maccus’s Wiel (from the Old English wael, a pool, whirlpool). In 1890 Maxwell was principally found in Antrim, Down and Dublin, and the estimated number of bearers was 3,050. In the United States it is the 404th most numerous surname with an estimated 77,000 bearers.
