Meara, Mara, ó Meadhra A Gaelic surname, from Meadhair (mirth). A sept of the Dál gCais who were chiefs of a district called Rosarguid, in the Barony of Upper Ormond in Tipperary, their territory centered upon Toomyvara (Tuaim Uí Mheadhra). In 1890 Meara was principally found in Tipperary, and the estimated number of bearers was 2,420 (all variants). In the United States Marra is the 4,928th most numerous surname with an estimated 5,500 bearers.
