Meehan The anglicisation of the surname of a number of Gaelic septs.: ó Mithidhín, meaning descendant of Mithidhín (born in June): a sept of Uí Maine who were co-arbs of Clontuskert near Ballinasloe in Galway; a sept who were co-arbs of St. Molaise at Ballaghmeehin in the parish of Rossinver in Leitrim. ó Maotháin, meaning descendant of Maothán (diminutive of maoth, soft), a surname found in Schrule in Mayo. In 1890 Meehan was principally found in Galway, Sligo, Donegal, Dublin and Clare, and the estimated number of bearers was 5,600 (including variants).
