Mulcahy, ó Maolchatha
A sept of Munster meaning descendant of Maolcatha meaning ‘battle-chief’ or Maolcathach ‘warlike-chief’, or Maolchathaigh ‘follower of Cathach, (warlike)’; according to Woulfe. In 1890 Mulcahy was principally found in Cok, Limerick, Waterford and Tipperary, and the estimated number of bearers was 3,405. In the United States it is the 5,814th most numerous surname with an estimated 5,500 bearers.
