Jacob Brown
(1790? - 1848)
Jacob Brown and Rebecca Smallwood were born in Virginia. Jacob in 1790 and Rebecca in 1788. They married on Dec. 26, 1814.
Some time after the birth of their oldest child in 1815, they moved to what was then Jackson County, Tennessee. Later this county was divided and the part of the county that the Brown family lived in became Clay County, Tennessee.
The names of their children are: James M., b 22 Jun 1815, d 30 Mar 1901; Thomas b 14 Aug 1818, d 27 Mar 1912; Emaline b ?, d 1913; William Henry, b 13 Feb 1831, d 23 Oct 1869; Sally, b ? d ?; Samuel Porter, b 1838, d ?; and Nancy Jane, b 1837, d 1844.
Three years after the death of their father (Jacob Brown in 1848), all seven of the Brown sons and daughters left Jackson (Clay) County, Tennessee to travel to Missouri. When they reached Missouri in 1853, the oldest brother, James M. traveled northward while the rest of the family continued to Oregon County where Thomas Brown homesteaded land at Falling Springs near what is now New Liberty, Missouri. William Henry moved to Birch Tree where he lived until his death. The Browns of south Missouri were among the first early settlers in that area.
