He had two daughters: Egidia, married James Kennedy of the family of Cassilis; and Elizabeth, married Ninian Stewart of Bute, mother of Ninian's son Robert Stewart. John also had a son and heir, also named John. [ This first John Blair must be the one named in SP III p.438, where he is shown to have married before 15 Nov. 1500 HELEN MONTGOMERIE, daughter of Hugh Montgomerie, 1st. Earl of Eglinton, by his wife Helen Campbell of Argyll. See also BP p.1784 and LG p.505. ]

JOHN BLAIR of that Ilk, son of David Blair, son of James Blair, son of James Blair, son of Roger Blair, son of David Blair, son of William Blair, son of William Blair. This first John Blair must be the one named in SP III p.438, where he is shown to have married (before 15 Nov. 1500) HELEN MONTGOMERIE, daughter of Hugh Montgomerie, 1st. Earl of Eglinton, by his wife Helen Campbell of Argyll. John had two daughters, Egidia and Elizabeth, and a son, John, his heir. [ LG p.505 says, "JOHN CRAUFURD, 12th of Craufurdland, m. Margaret, dau. of John Blair of that Ilk, by the Lady Elizabeth Montgomery, dau. of the 1st Earl of Eglintoun, and d. in 1583 . . . ." This should say Helen Montgomery, not Elizabeth. However, BP p.1784 says that a certain John Blair of that Ilk had a daughter named Margaret who married John Maxwell of Pollok, who died 1517. These must be referring to the same John Blair, but whether or not these two daughters named Margaret are in fact the same woman is not quite as certain. ]

1 Jean BLAIR Birth: Abt. 1551 Of Blair, Ayr, Scotland Spouse: Alexander CUNNINGHAM Marriage: Abt. 1572 , Ayr, Scotland or Jean Blair must be the one mentioned in SCM as the third wife of John Stewart, Hereditary Sheriff of Bute, who died ante 1612. m. Said in SCM to have been the 3rd. wife of John Stewart, Hereditary Sheriff of Bute, who died ante 1612

2 Grisel BLAIR Birth: Abt. 1553/Abt. 1584 Of Blair, Ayr, Scotland who married DAVID BLAIR of Adamton, by a charter under the Great Seal, 21 July 1598. m.David Blair d. ante 1612 . John Stewart, m.(NN) Ker of m.David Blair | Sheriff of Bute, Kersland. of Adamton. | d. ante 1612 who married DAVID BLAIR of Adamton, by a charter under the Great Seal, 21 July 1598. Said by Douglas and BP to be daughter of John and Grissel. Married (charter dated 21 July 1598) David Blair of Adamton, her distant cousin. BP p.1784 says she married ante 1615 Sir John Maxwell of Pollok, d.1647, the second marriage for both of them--BP also says Grisel was John Blair eldest daughter, seemingly having been named after her mother.

3 *John BLAIR Birth: Abt. 1574 Of Blair, Ayr, Scotland d.1609 Spouse: Isobel BOYD Marriage: 1595 , Ayr, Scotland. JOHN BLAIR of that Ilk, got a charter under the Great Seal--"Johanni Blair de eodem, terrarum de Ramshorn, Meadow Flat, etc., etc." in the shires of Edinburgh and Lanark, dated 18 Feb. 1597. Douglas says that this John had three sons, and then died in 1609, being succeeded by his eldest son. Here are his sons, according to Douglas: -- Bryce (Bricius) Blair, his heir. -- James Blair of Malsmure, "fratri germano Bricii Blair de eodem," who got two charters under the Great Seal, dated in June of 1615. Married Annabella Stewart. -- Robert Blair of Bogtoun, who was the father of Sir Adam Blair of Bogtoun (Adam is designed nephew of Bryce Blair of that Ilk.)

4 Bryce BLAIR Birth: Abt. 1573 Of Blair, Ayr, Scotland ; Bryce Blair of Lochwood Alexander's eldest brother german.") styled "of Lochwood" during his father's life, afterwards "of Blair" or "of that Ilk." Bryce is called "eldest brother german" of Alexander Blair, no. 4 Bryce (Bricius) Blair, his heir.

5 Margaret BLAIR Birth: Abt. 1582 Of Blair, Ayr, Scotland who married (NN) KER of Kersland, and got a charter under the Great Seal to her and Robert Ker her son, of the lands of Frearn in Ayrshire, dated 2 Jan. 1594. Said by Douglas to be daughter of John and Grissel. Married (NN) KER of Kersland, and had a son named ROBERT KER. Robert and Margaret got a charter dated 2 Jan. 1594.

6 James BLAIR Birth: Abt. 1576 Of Blair, Ayr, Scotland James Blair of Malsmure, "fratri germano Bricii Blair de eodem," who got two charters under the Great Seal, dated in June of 1615. Married Annabella Stewart. --styled "of Malsmure," called Bryce's "brother german" in charters dated June of 1615. James married Annabella Stewart

7 Robert BLAIR of Bogtoun, Birth: Abt. 1578 Of Blair, Ayr, Scotland Robert Blair of Bogtoun, who was the father of Sir Adam Blair of Bogtoun (Adam is designed nephew of Bryce Blair of that Ilk.) styled "of Auldmure," styled by Douglas "of Bogtoun." Robert's son was SIR ADAM BLAIR of Bogtoun, who is mentioned as "nephew of Sir Bryce Blair of that Ilk."

8 Alexander Blair d.1641 md.(1600) to Elizabeth Cochrane father Sir William Cochrane 1st. Earl of Dundonald d.1685 married in 1600 to Elizabeth Cochrane, heiress of the Cochranes, and died in 1641. Their son SIR WILLIAM COCHRANE became 1st. Earl of Dundonald, and died 1685.

9 Hugh Blair mentioned as a younger brother of Alexander Blair.

10 Gavin Blair mentioned as another younger brother of Alexander.

First, notice that John and Grissel's sons Alexander, Hugh, and Gavin do not appear in Douglas. Furthermore, Douglas' John Blair, eldest son of John and Grisel, is not found here. Instead, we have Bryce Blair of Lochwood as the eldest son, whereas Douglas shows a Bryce as grandson of John and Grisel. Also, the only Robert Blair shown by Douglas for this era is grandson of John and Grisel, whereas SP III p.339 shows a Robert Blair of Auldmure (not Bogtoun) as a son of John and Grissel.

Apparently, Douglas has split Grissel Sempill's husband John Blair into TWO men, making them father and son. The information quoted in SP III p.339 seems to require that we identify Douglas' John Blair who died in 1609 as the John Blair who married Grissel Sempill

Next, notice that Grizel or Grisel is shown in BP as the wife of Sir John Maxwell rather than of David Blair of Adamton. In fact she married both men, David first, and Sir John second (John seems to have survived her). This is mentioned in BP p.1784, "Sir John Maxwell, Bt., of Pollok, . . . m. 2ndly, ante 1615, Grizel, widow of David Blair, 7th of Adamton, and eldest dau. and co-heir of John Blair, yr., of that Ilk."

If we put Douglas together with SP and BP, the list of John Blair's descendants should be something like this:

JOHN BLAIR of that Ilk, also called John Blair of Blair, received charters dated from 8 Feb. 1573 to 3/4 Feb. 1575. Married (contract dated 11 May 1565) GRISSEL SEMPILL, illegitimate daughter of Robert, 3rd. Lord Sempill (**Note that Douglas mistakenly calls him 2nd. Lord Semple.**). This John must be the one who is said by Douglas to have died in 1609, father of Bryce Blair who succeeded 1610. John's known children (certainly not all by Grissel) are as follows (*not* in order of birth):

Next Gen

JOHN BLAIR of that Ilk, also called John Blair of Blair, received charters dated from 8 Feb. 1573 to 3/4 Feb. 1575. Married (contract dated 11 May 1565) GRISSEL SEMPILL, illegitimate daughter of Robert, 3rd. Lord Sempill

Children

1 Margaret BLAIR Birth: Abt. 1603 Of Blair, Ayr, Scotland Marriage: Abt. 1625 , Ayr, Scotland Spouse: John CRAWFORD

2 Anna BLAIR Birth: Abt. 1601 Of Blair, Ayr, Scotland

3 Brice BLAIR Birth: Abt. 1600 Ayr, Scotland

4 Grizel BLAIR Birth: Abt. 1597 Of Blair, Ayr, Scotland

Bryce Blair of Lochwood as "ELDER" brother german of Robert Blair of Auldmure and Alexander Blair--**NOT "ELDEST"** as I erroneously stated in my earlier post. Therefore it is possible that Bryce was NOT the eldest son of John and Grisel as I had assumed. Bryce Blair of Lochwood could well be a younger brother of the John Blair who died in 1609, making Douglas' reconstruction correct after all.

If this is the case, then the birth order of the sons of John and Grisel would be: John Blair of that Ilk (d.1609), Bryce Blair of Lochwood, Robert Blair of Auldmure, Alexander Blair (d.1641), Hugh Blair, and Gavin Blair. The daughters of John and Grisel would be: Grisel Blair (eldest dau.), Jean Blair, and Margaret Blair. And John Blair (d.1609) would be the father of Bryce Blair of that Ilk, James Blair of Malsmure, and Robert Blair of Bogtoun--Douglas' "Robert Blair of Bogtoun" would NOT be identical to Robert Blair of Auldmure.

If this reconstruction is correct (and I now have no reason to doubt Douglas' statement that John and Grisel were the parents of John who died 1609), then that would mean that the John who died in 1609 would be your John Blair, husband of Isobel Boyd. And your Brice Blair, husband of Esther Peden, would be the Bryce Blair of that Ilk who died 4 Feb. 1639, and who was father of Sir Bryce Blair of that Ilk, of John Blair (eventually of that Ilk), and at least one Margaret Blair (perhaps two Margarets). But Douglas says nothing of any "Nancy Blair"--not that that invalidates your information. )

BRYCE BLAIR OF THAT ILK, son of John Blair (wife Grissel Sempill), son of John Blair (wife Margaret Cunninghame), son of John Blair (wife Helen Ross), son of John Blair (wife Helen Montgomerie), son of David Blair, son of James Blair, son of James Blair, son of Roger Blair, son of David Blair, son of William Blair, son of William Blair. **Note that this pedigree deletes the "John Blair" whom Douglas shows as the father of Bryce, instead identifying Bryce's father John who died 1609 with the John Blair who married Grissel Sempill, whom Douglas mistakenly said were Bryce's grandparents instead of parents.** Bryce was served and retoured heir to his father John in the whole lands and barony of Blair 10 April 1610. Douglas did not know the name of Bryce's wife, but said that he had two sons, Sir Bryce and John, and a daughter named MARGARET who married SIR DUNCAN CAMPBELL of Auchinbreck, Baronet. [ BP p.463 says that Sir Duncan Campbell, 2nd. Bt. of Auchinbreck, married in 1620 to MARGARET BLAIR, daughter of BRYCE BLAIR OF BLAIR. BP goes on to say that Margaret died sine prole circa 1627. **But see below**] Bryce died 4 Feb. 1639 and was succeeded by his eldest son:

This Bryce Blair must be the same as the "Bryce Blair of Lochwood" mentioned in SP III p.339. He must also be the "Bryce Blair of that Ilk" mentioned in BP p.2530, where he is said to have had a daughter named MARGARET BLAIR, first wife of SIR ARCHIBALD STEWART of Blackhall, Ardgowan, etc. Of this marriage, Bolton p.21 says the following:

Sir Archibald married firstly, c.1613, Margaret Blair, daughter of Bryce Blair, a descendant of the Semples. From the Semples, Bryce Blair had gained part of the lands of Langside, including the Arbory Fort and the ancient Fort of Camphill. The lands were sold c.1615. "By this marriage there were four sons and two daughters . . . ." Bolton's comment describing Bryce as "a descendant of the Semples" is noteworthy. Since Bryce's mother was a Semple/Sempill, it seems odd to describe Bryce as "descended" from the Semples (though I've seen a translation of Tacitus in which someone was described as a person's descendant, and the relationship was only that of grandson and grandfather). Bolton's remark is probably based on Douglas' version, where Bryce is the *grandson* of Grissel Semple--whereas SP III p.339 would make Bryce Grissel's son.

BP p.2530 says that Bryce's daughter Margaret Blair died December 1621. (BP p.2530 and Bolton p.21 go on to say that Sir Archibald married secondly Lady Margaret Home, daughter of Sir George Home of Wedderburne and Lady Jean Haldane of Gleneagles, having from this marriage one son. Sir Archibald died 1665.) ***But compare Sir Archibald Stewart's wife Margaret, daughter of Bryce Blair of that Ilk, to Sir Duncan Campbell's wife Margaret, daughter of Bryce Blair of Blair.*** According to BP, Archibald's wife died 1621, while Duncan's wife died circa 1627. These two Margaret Blairs, daughters of Bryce, cannot be identical. Did Bryce have TWO daughters named Margaret? Or was Duncan's wife a daughter of Bryce's son Sir Bryce (that is, was Duncan's wife a niece of Archibald's wife)?

SIR BRYCE BLAIR of that Ilk, son of Bryce Blair, knighted in his youth by King Charles I. Sir Bryce was served and retoured heir to his father Bryce in the whole lands and barony of Blair 25 April 1639. Douglas did not know the name of his wife, but says he had only one child, a son named John. Sir Bryce did not long survive his father, dying in July 1639, and being succeeded by his son:

JOHN BLAIR of that Ilk, son of Sir Bryce, was served and retoured heir to his grandfather Bryce, and his father Sir Bryce, in the whole lands and barony of Blair 1 May 1645, but died soon after that without issue. He was succeeded by his uncle John, younger brother of Sir Bryce

Lochwinnoch

The name of the parish has been spelt in many various ways, often Lochinnioch. It extends from the bleak uplands to the fertile valley of the upper Black Cart and three lochs. the main villages are Lochwinnoch and Howwood. There has been a chapel at Lochwinnoch since the 12 century at latest which became the parish church in the 16th century. The first cotton mill was built at Lochwinnoch in 1788 and the mills gave much employment until the American Civil War when the two major mills were burnt and the village was almoste deserted. At Howwood (or Hollow Wood) a mission chapel was built in 1838, called Elliotstoun, but a quoad sacra church was not built until 1858 and the parish of Howwood was not disjoined from Lochwinnoch & Kilbarchan until 1904. The Auld Kirk on John's Hill is a ruin, still with its bell-cote and clock in the burial ground which is generally locked. The west doorway is dated 1729. The present parish church was built in 1806 at the other end of the main street.
