CoulterII Family

I am working on find out what were the names of the Coulter who came to America in the 1700s. The Coulter family owned their own ships. I was told that if the Captain of the ship brought his family aboard. That he did not have to list them with passengers of the his ship. So this means that our Coulter family could have been aboard not have been listed. The only I think that we can find out who was on this list is by look at the first names of the Coulter families in the time frame.

These include the Boston Transcript (a genealogical column widely circulated), the complete 1790 U.S. Federal Census, and published Revolutionary War records. The most recent update to this database reflects the inclusion of volumes 196-206.

For Biography�For use in biographical searches, this index presents few problems. It is an easy way to find information about the lives of many American men and women�information other sources do not always contain. For Genealogy�Family historians will find this a tool unparalleled by any other. It should be one of the first tools used by genealogical researchers. This does not mean genealogists will always find the answer to every query; however, the researcher who fails to use the index may miss key information easily available. Nearly half of all references within the AGBI do not appear in any other place. Information that Appears Nowhere Else�Ten percent of all published genealogies are not indexed anywhere else. This index includes Boston Transcript entries, with 2 million or more personal name references that appeared in the Boston Transcript during its forty-plus years of publication. Most of this material has never been published anywhere else. Consolidation of Multiple Indexes�All of the twelve volumes of the First Census of the United States can be found here. This means the index offers a complete record, in one place, of all heads of families who lived in the United States in 1790. Also included are the forty-three volumes of records for Colonial soldiers who served in the Revolutionary War.

Names that Were Indexed�The index is of all persons according to set standards, rather than every name. The following persons have been included in the index: (1) person mentioned as wife, husband, father, mother, son, daughter, or other relative, of some person mentioned; (2) person mentioned as being born or married, or those mentioned dying; (3) person mentioned as having performed military or public service, or mentioned in connection with other facts of biographical importance; (4) person mentioned in a deed or legal document; (5) person mentioned as one of the founders of a settlement, a passenger on an immigrant ship (before 1850), a member of a church (before 1850), etc. Name the Were Omitted�Omissions include: (1) persons (such as ship captains, ministers, army officers, etc.) mentioned only casually and not related to the family line being followed; (2) all casually mentioned names of well-known persons (e.g., George Washington or Benjamin Franklin); (3) witnesses, and similar incidental names, that appear in legal documents; (4) authors of works cited, or persons cited as authorities for statements.

Entry Construction�Each entry consists of the following: (1) Person's surname, spelled as it appears in the indexed text (Note that names are, in general, written and filed as one word, e.g., "Van Derbilt" and "Van Der Bilt" would be written as "Vanderbilt"; also, surnames with apostrophes have been indexed and alphabetized without the apostrophe, though it does appear in the actual name, e.g., "O'Connor" would be filed as "Oconnor."); (2) The person's first name (or initial) and middle names (or initials), if any (Note that if there is no given name, we have substituted a long dash in that area, and where an abbreviated name is given in the text, we have substituted the full name indicated if it is clear (e.g., for "Dan" we write "Daniel"); (3) The person's birth year, as it appears in the indexed text; (4) The person's state (or states) of residence (including the states of birth and death, if they are known); (5) Biographical data, abbreviated; (6) The page citation of the text being indexed; consisting of the abbreviated title and page number. Abbreviations�State name abbreviations are uniformly two-letter. For well-known foreign countries, three-letter abbreviations are used (e.g., Can for Canada or Eng for England). The efficient indexing of a genealogical work requires practical commonsense, as well as good editorial judgment. At times it also requires something approaching detective ability, for genealogies have been compiled by all sorts of people, most of whom have not had any previous experience in writing, and the material in some of them is devious and obscure to the last degree to everyone except the person who compiled it. If, in a given text, a genealogical descent is obscure or ambiguous, we decipher it and index the names cited according to the best conclusions we can arrive at without undue delay or abnormal cost. We are indexing, not unraveling obscurities.

[p.496]was further required carefully to enroll the men and arms in a book, to be consulted when troops might be needed for active service. From this statement of the author it is evident that a large number of settlers had come with Sir Hugh Montgomery to the Ards during the first four years of his colonization. It is to be regretted that no list of these original settlers can now be found. Among them were several named Orr, who appear to have originally settled in the townlands of BalIyblack and Ballykeel, and were the progenitors of a very numerous connection of this surname throughout the Ards. The earliest recorded deaths in this connection, after their settlement in the Ards, were those of James Orr of Ballyblack, who died in the year 1627, and Janet McClement, his wife, who died in 1636. The descendants, male and female, of this worthy couple were very numerous, and as their intermarriages have been carefully recorded, we have thus fortunately a sort of index to the names of many other families of Scottish settlers in the Ards and Castlereagh. page 370 Brown vs. Brown.--Chancery writ dated 1st April, 1771. Robert Brown and Rebecca Brown, late Rebecca Gardner, formerly the wife of Thomas Gardner, deceased, and Francis Gardner, eldest son and heir-at-law of said Thomas Gardner, orators. In 1763, Thomas Gardner and John Brown purchased a tract of land from John Coulter, in Beverly Manor. Deeds were made in September, 1763. Shortly after, Thomas Gardner died intestate, leaving above widow and son and heir. John Brown entered and took possession by survivorship and died, devising the land to his sons John and Hugh, with provision that his son James should make a deed to his brothers. It is charged that John Brown and Thomas Gardner agreed there should be no survivorship. Prayer for division. John, Jr., was younger brother of Hugh Brown. Hugh was infant at his father's death. John was not 15 years old at his father's death.

This fact had much to do in originating the necessity of this grand edifice, now under the process of dedication. This building needs no eulogy from me; it speaks for itself in tones that will reverberate through generations yet unborn. When this valley, with its hundred villages, smoking with the fires of industry, shall quake with the thunderings of the iron horse as it drives with lightning speed its human freight from ocean to ocean, this house will be pointed to as the proudest monument to science between the rising and setting sun. Long after the drapery of the grave shall have enshrouded them, the names of Williams, Beaver, King, Hammond, Shepler, Linn, Blythe, Teeters, Alexander, Coulter, Hartrick and others connected therewith, will have an abiding place in the future. The contractors, too, Nell Blythe & Co., will not be forgotten, when future generations shal1 make up their jewels of rejoicing. We cannot refrain from turning aside for a moment and pointing you to some interesting features in the life of our old friend and schoolmate, Win. Coulter. More than half a century ago we together attended the old Colhoon school, near the late residence of Abe Hull. He has been so long identified with this community in all its interests, and especially in that of its public schools, that his nature has had much to do in moulding the disposition and tastes of the people. He was born November 11, 1817, in Catsburg, in the old house still standing on the corner of the street leading to the cemetery. He came on the stage of life, it will thus be seen, about the time in the history of that village when "Biddie Caldwell" held queenly sway. He first attended school in an old house long since passed into the river, near the residence of the late Judge Hill. His next school was that of Miss Burke, who kept in an old house on the Bollman lot, near the residence of the late Noble Woodward. Among the scholars were his brother Ralph and Joseph Woodward. He [p.25] also attended John Dunning's school, kept in the red house already named, where the Peoples Bank stands. In 1827 he attended school in the old house in the rear of the grocery of D. H. Williams, where Gabriel Silverthorn lived long ago. Early in 1828 he attended the old Colhoon school. In 1830 he went to school to a man named Hepburn, who, with his two daughters, taught a semi-graded school in the old Dorcas Cooper house. Mrs. Margaret S1oan was one of the scholars, and has very vivid recollections of the teachers. After the adoption of the common school system he was a scholar at the Irish Lewis school on Marshall's hill. The last school he ever attended was taught by Moses Arthurs, on the Yough river, near Robbin's mill. At the close of this school he considered himself a graduate in the "Single Rule of Three," and congratulated himself, no doubt, that after years of hard study in many schools of learning, he had at length acquired sufficient proficiency in that Rule as to qualify him for the carpenter trade. He began to learn his trade with a Mr. Kelly, but made poor progress, owing to the fact that Kelly did not have anything to do. This did not suit the young apprentice as well as it would boys now-a-days, so he left Kelly and engaged with Amos Robbins to learn the millwright trade. It soon, however, struck William that curves, wheels and spindles would not lead rapidly to wealth, so he suddenly, with rule and square, set out for himself on his first track, and how well he has pursued it ever since, let the result of skill all over this neighborhood bear the testimony. He is with us to-night, and although his first love of a schoolhouse has been superceded, he delights to dwell on the beauties of this grand palace. He has been a school director in his native town back to the time to which memory runneth not to the contrary. He has seen the old building across the way come and answer its day. Although in appearance he looks hale and robust, a twinkle of the eye readily detects the fact that the weight of years is upon him. God bless yon Wm. Coulter.

page 124: 8th. The present building is the third house of worship owned by the society, and the eighth place where it has held regular meetings. The initial steps towards securing this site and putting up this building were taken in 1864, when Rev. Ezra Hingely was pastor. The building committee appointed [p.124] by the Quarterly conference was composed of O. C. House, R. M. Clark, Daniel Pierce, Alexander Scott, E. L. King, R. Stockdale, Joseph Alexander, James Williams, John Blythe, Cyrus Underwood, Robert Coulter, Joel T. Ferree, Isaac Jones, Col. Joseph Taylor, C. R. Stuckslager and S. P. Keller. The present site was purchased from Messrs. John and Henry Shaefer. In 1867 the lecture room was finished, opened, dedicated and used, and in 1878 the main audience room. Rev. Dr. W. A. Davidson officiated in the dedication of the lecture room and the pastor and Rev. A. B. Leonard in that of the main audience room. The building and lot cost about $45,000. It is now about seventy years since Methodism was planted in this place, and this fine building is a monument both of its spirit and its activity.

page 195 Abraham was born February 1, 1S12; married Mary Carson, now deceased. They lived for many years on the farm now owned by Robert Coulter, in Carroll township. He removed many years ago to Illinois, where he again married, and where he died June 14, 1886.

The ground [p.12] after being cleared was soft and easily turned up by the homemade plow, consisting of a straight beam and handles, with a wooden mould-board, the share and coulter alone being iron. The harrow was triangular in shape, as often we see in modern days, but the teeth were of wood and the frame of hewn timber. The gears were principally at first such as were brought with the settler from the east, but the new ones, and repairing was made from ropes, home-made out of tow, which was the second quality of flax.

View full context THE OLD AND NEW MONONGAHELA Life Of William Colhoun. page 45 Disappointed, but not discouraged, the young Irishman made rapid pace to his cousin William, in Clarksville, Greene country, in whose store he remained two years. At the expiration of this time, Samuel Clark, proprietor of the town, and his brother, Robert Clark, of Brownsville, sent him to New Orleans with a flat boat loaded with flour and whiskey. The late Captain Samuel Clark, son of the above Robert Clark, was one of the crew attached to the flat boat. They left Millsborough in February, 1821, and returned in due time, coming up on the first steamboat that ever run on the lower Mississippi; that [p.44] being her second trip up. The boat could not get further than Louisville, at which point they embarked on a small boat for Cincinnati. Here they found the river too low for any boat, and they were compelled to buy horses on which they made the rest of the journey by way of Zanesville, where Colhoun had a cousin in the person of the wife of the Rev. Culbertson, a Presbyterian minister, with whom they tarried a day. On his return he obtained employment in the then small town of Washington as a clerk in the store of the late Alexander Reed, father of C. M. Reed, esq., who kept store on the same corner which his son now occupies. Colhoun now had his residence for the first time in Washington county. He was married in 1823 to Ruth Clark, daughter of Jetta and Hannah Clark, who lived midway between Millsborough and Clarksville. She was born in the same township February 28, 1795. After close confinement in Reed's store for two years, William's health began to fail. Not being able to work at manual labor, the physicians advised him to teach a country school where he would be compelled to walk daily not less than five miles. As near as we can find out it was about this time he got married, and moved to a house on the farm of Mr. Harmon, near David Kerr's, on Pigeon creek, in which neighborhood he taught his first school. He in succession lived and taught school at Benjamin Parkinson's, near Dunningsville, at William Jones's, near Ginger Hill, and whilst living here he taught at the Dutch meeting house school house. From the farm of William Jones he moved to Jetta McKelvey's, on Mingo, near John Witherow's, a brother of the late Samuel Witherow, who was the father of John Witherow, of the old blacksmith stand near Curtin school house. In the Spring of 1829 he moved to the old house that stood where the present residence of Robert Coulter now stands, then owned by the late Daniel Van Voorhis, and so long occupied by his son Abraham, now of Illinois. It was during this summer that he taught his first school in the famous old log school house near the present residence of Van Shannon, on Taylor's Ran. This house was the first building [p.45] erected especially for school purposes in all that neighborhood, and perhaps in all the old township of Fallowfield. The school houses generally in Western Pennsylvania at that time were "waste houses," unfit for any other purpose. This log house, was the successor of the old house that stood on the old road leading to Hair's mill, in which Thomas Heslep, of Horse Shoe, and a Miss Crawford taught. This first log schoolhouse was built by general consent, and subscription paid by labor in building it.

THE OLD AND NEW MONONGAHELA Horse Shoe Bottom Church, Williamsport (Monongahela City.) page 60 The brick row now owned by Wm. Coulter was not yet built. The old frame building opposite this row was the brewery of Samuel Devore. The old frame house near the school house referred to was the residence of the widow of the late Elias Watkins, who was a brother of the first wife of Abraham Van Voorhis. The old frame house, burned years ago, above the brick, known in early days as the Swartz house, was the residence of Asher Van Kirk, who carried on the chairmaking business. The old tavern house near the mouth of the creek was among the first buildings on the island after its sale to James Manown. By this sale the ferry went into the hands of James Manown and was no longer the Parkison Ferry. After grave consideration the Carroll board of directors determined to erect in each sub-district a stone or brick school house. The Harlem house on the Judge Baird farm, the Columbia, the Horse Shoe, on the road from the Baptist church to Columbia, the stone house at the forks of the road above Markell's distillery, one near Ginger Hill, one on the farm of Samuel Keenan, one on the farm of Isaac Van Voorhis, the [p.60] double house adjoining the old Presbyterian church in Williamsport and the one on the island, long since passed into the river, were the houses erected under the resolution. The one in Catzburg was afterwards determined upon, as the population increased. It may be that a house was built near the Dutch meeting house under the first resolution. The stone school house, now converted into a two-storied dwelling, was built by Elgy Van Voorhis, now an extensive farmer and cattle dealer in Greene county. The plastering was done by Col. A. T. Gregg, who taught the first school in the house. The one on the farm of Van Voorhis was built by the late David Phillips, brother of Capt. Robert Phillips; the price was $200.00. Cheapness was the great desideratum in building, and the history of these houses attested the impolicy of such an idea. These houses as to comfort were in advance of their predecessors, having board seats and glass in the windows, with shutters, also a chimney for a stove, an innovation on the time-honored fireplace. The people as well as directors began to select teachers in some measure on account of their qualifications, although no formal examination was required. The next series of school houses in this township was frame, excepting the stone one on the Brownsville road near the residence of the late Francis Nelson.

Aaron Harvey Kerr page 129 The earliest Methodists in this place held their meetings in private houses or in rented buildings. This continued for thirteen years, or from the origin of the movement, in 1813, to the year 1826. In the beginning of that period, AEneas Graham, as already seen, was class leader, and John P. Shugart class steward. At the end of that period, as nearly as can be ascertained, there were three classes, led respectively by AEneas Graham, Asher Vankirk and James Mills. In 1826 William Jones, AEneas Graham and Robert Beebe, appointed a committee by the Quarterly Conference of the Beallsville Circuit, for the purchase of a three-story building standing on the river bank, and had it remodeled and made into a two-story church. It seems fairly certain that during the nine years of worship David Sherbondy was added to the list of class leaders, making in all probability a fourth class. It is impossible at this day to tell who were stewards during the period when the appointment remained a part of Beallsville circuit. Some of the Trustees holding the property on the river bank were Wm. Jones, AEneas Graham, Robert Beebe, Asher Vankirk, Joseph Alexander and William and John Herron. James Mills was a local preacher. The removal of the society from the church on the river bank to the new church on the corner of Race and Chess streets took place in May, 1835. Owing to the records of the Sabbath school prior to the year 1862 being lost, we can give no positive history of the number of officers, teachers or scholars of the school. The first we get is April 13, 1862, when the attendance was 208; at that time there were 9 officers, 27 teachers, and a total membership of 312.

Johnson Baird and William Wilson did the stone and brick work, whilst the veteran contractor, William Coulter, with us to-night, did the carpenter work. It was opened for school in the fall of 1853. Andrew Brown, now of the "Forks," and T. R. Hazzard, just returned from West Newton, were the first teachers, the former having been the last to teach in the old building.

Ira. R. Butler. Rev. Aaron Harvey Kerr page 143 Ira Butler died at his home in Carroll township, July 18, 1884. The Daily Republican in a notice of his death says, "His funeral took place on Sunday, July 20, from his old homestead, and was followed to Monongahela cemetery by the largest concourse of people that has ever been seen at the obsequies of any citizen in this part of the country. His death occurred at ten o'clock on Friday night, and the funeral was announced for two o'clock on Sabbath. Long before the hour appointed for the interment hundreds of people in scores of vehicles had collected at the venerated old man's residence to do honor to the memory of one who had lived among them a monument of honesty, uprightness and purity. The pall bearers were Wm. Galbraith, Wm. Coulter, David Rabe and Joseph Warne. The funeral was under the direction of Capt. A.D. O'Donovan. The casket furnished was of oak, draped with black cloth. On the plate was the following inscription:CAPT. IRA REESE BUTLER,AGED 91 YEARS, 8 MONTHS AND 3 DAYS.

THE OLD AND NEW MONONGAHELA Richard Stockdale. Rev. Aaron Harvey Kerr page 146 October 15th, 1815, on the Curry farm, Forward township. Allegheny county. His father moved to the farm on the pike, where James Stockdale lived, while Richard was yet a lad. The family consisted of five brothers: John; James, who lived on the home place; William and Robert, who were in the furniture and lumber business for many years, both now dead. There were five sisters: Sarah, widow of the late Captain Samuel Morgan, of Gastonville; Rachel, wife of James Porter, of Bloomington, Ill.; Margaret, wife of James Kerr, of this city; Eliza, widow of Robert Patton; and Forbes, wife of William Coulter, both of this city.

W. C. Preston died at the residence of his brother, John S. Preston, in this city on Tuesday, 22d May. William Campbell Preston was the oldest son of Gen. Francis Preston, of Virginia, and was born [p.306] in Philadelphia on Dec. 27, 1794, his father being a member of the Congress of the United States then sitting in this city. His mother was the only child of General William Campbell, who commanded the American forces at the battle of King's Mountain. Her mother was a sister of Patrick Henry. On account of feeble health in boyhood, Col. Preston was sent to a Southern College, and graduated in the South Carolina College in 1812. After studying law for a few years, he went to Europe in 1816, and returning in 1819, soon married Miss Coulter, daughter of David Coulter, Esq., formerly of Columbia. In 1822 he settled himself permanently in Columbia as a lawyer. He was several times elected to the State Legislature, and twice to the U. S. Senate. His wife died in 1828, and in 1830 he married Miss Davis, daughter of Dr. James Davis of Columbia. She died about five years since, and he leaves neither wife nor children. He leaves the name of patriot, gentleman and Christian.

Harwell, daughter of Jonathan Lane and widow of Vines Harwell, Esq., was born in Oglethorpe county, Ga., November 25, 1799, and died in Walker county, Ga., at the residence of her son-in-law, Jefferson Coulter, July 25, 1873. After her married to Vines Harwell in 1823, they removed in the fall of 1826 or 1827 to Troup county, Ga., and were some of its earliest settlers. Two of her sons, twin brothers Theophilus S. L. and Richard J., are members of the North Georgia Conference. Two of her sons lost their lives in the service of their country.
