Page 440: 1731 17 February. John Maysey of Chiswick, Middlesex, aged 19, bound to William Burge to serve 5 years in Virginia or Maryland.

John m'd Lettice MONTGOMERY. It is my understand that John father-in-law gave him and Lettice a large tract of land at abotu 150 pr more acers for a wedding present. John 1st wife was married Lettice MONTGOMERY. On the Spiller page. John died in 1760 at the age of 40. daughter in law or granddaughter of Wm Spiller. That's how it is stated in his will. The will is dated in 1746. That's where you need to look. My guess is that Mary died and He married Lettice about 1748.

John was m. lst to Mary____(granddaughter of William Spiller. He was married 2nd to Lettice______(Lettice m. 2nd Philip Mason). In his will made 10 June 1760 Fairfax Co. Va. he mentions his wife Lettice and children : Mary, Robert, Ann and Charles. This and other information was given by E.E. Macy in an article he wrote for THE VIRGINIA GAZETTE, Williamsburg, Virginia on the 19th of Octber 1956.

Several Conners Have Been Sheriff

This is the second of several articles on the various branches of the Conner family in Hamilton County)

The Conners have kept a tight rein on the Hamilton County sheriff's job. In addition to James C. Conner serving as sheriff before and after the Civil War, Asbury B. Conner and his son and nephew were also sheriff.

While the James C. Conners are associated with Walden's Ridge, many of the other Conners settled at Brainerd. That community still has its Conner Estates as well as Conner Street and Asbury Drive. The Conners were Methodist and a number of family members were named for the Methodist bishop Francis Asbury.

Asbury B. Conner's family had been in Marion County prior to relocating to Hamilton County to the vicinity of Brainerd Mission. His father was Henry Conner, who was in Hamilton County in the late 1830s but apparently died at a young age. Asbury Conner's mother, Mary, was born in Virginia about 1795. She continued to live at Brainerd up to the time of the Civil War. Asbury B. Conner had an older brother, Wesley Payne Conner. His other brothers included Thomas and Samuel H., and the sisters included Penelope and Sarah. A descendant said A.B. Conner lived in Sequatchie Valley with his step-father, brothers and sisters, but he "trudged over the mountain into the valley and got work at Brainerd Mission because the step-father was unkind to him. He stole his eldest sister, Penelope, away from his step-father and took her to the mission. Penelope had married Nelson Majors in Marion County, but he died soon after their son, John W. Majors, was born in 1839. The Majors child was brought to Hamilton County when he was two to live with his Conner relatives. During the Civil War, he fought with the Sixth Indiana Cavalry. After the war, he was a deputy sheriff and jailer when Asbury B. Conner was sheriff. Majors farmed until there was another Conner regime in the sheriff's office in 1886, when he became keeper of the county jail. In 1867, he had married Mary Smith, daughter of William and Jane MACY Smith. Penelope Conner Majors in 1849 married John Vail, a former missionary at Brainerd Mission whose first wife had died. Penelope died in 1852 and was buried at the Brainerd Mission Cemetery in the grave where Dr. Samuel Worcester formerly had been interred.

Asbury B. Conner was a justice of the peace in 1861 at the start of the Civil War. He was arrested by Confederate authorities when the war began, but William Crutchfield helped gain his release. A.B. Conner then went to Kentucky, where he joined a Tennessee regiment and became a captain in the Union army. After the war, he was the first marshal of Chattanooga. He was county sheriff from 1866-1868 and again 1870-1872. William H. Bean was elected sheriff in August of 1872, but he was ruled out of office by the Tennessee Supreme Court on a challenge that he had not given a full accounting from his services as county tax collector. James C. Conner was named sheriff by justices of the county court. Asbury B. Conner sued James C. Conner, claiming the action of the justices was illegal and he should still be sheriff. But he lost the case.

By his first wife, Elizabeth L. MAYSEY, Asbury B. Conner had Electa J., John M., Charles H. and Sarah E. Electa Conner married Robert Gillespie, and they lived at Sunnyside, east of Missionary Ridge. A.B. Conner married Susan Harvell just after the war, though she was 20 years younger than himself. Their children were Samuel Asbury and Mary J. A.B. Conner in the summer of 1879 decided to leave Chattanooga and make a home across the Mississippi. Susan Harvell Conner died in September 1880 at Boonville, Ark, but A.B. Conner lived until 1901 when he was 79. He died at Magazine, Ark.

Samuel Asbury Conner, son of A.B. Conner, was raised on the farm at Brainerd. He worked for Loomis and Hart as a young man and later was involved in real estate development and in building. One of his projects was the family farm, which was subdivided into the Conner Estates. He was sheriff from 1908-1914 and made history by appointing a woman deputy, Mrs. J.J. Bork, in 1909. Samuel A. Conner organized the Interstate Fair Association in 1915. He was elected to an eight-year term as county judge in 1918. Samuel A. Conner died in July 1932 when he suffered a stroke while campaigning for still another elected position - tax collector. He married Dora Shields in 1893 and they had three children, including sons Wayne and Edwin.

The other Conner sheriff was John Emory Conner, a son of Wesley Payne Conner. Wesley Conner had obtained 80 acres in Hamilton County in 1840 from his father-in-law, Charles MAYSEY of Walker County, Ga. Wesley Conner married Jane Montgomery MAYSEY, who was one of the early teachers at Chattanooga. Her parents were Charles and Nancy Montgomery MAYSEY. The brother of Nancy Montgomery MAYSEY served with distinction under Andrew Jackson at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend and lost his life in the battle. William R. MAYSEY, son of Charles MAYSEY, also lived at Brainerd.

The Conners and Montgomerys were both of Irish descent. Wesley Conner died in the late 1840s, and his widow and her son, John Emory Conner, lived for a time after the war with the A.B. Conners. Later, John E. resided at Brainerd with his cousins, the Majors family. John E. attended Aldehoff's Institute, and he later operated the Conner stables on Cherry Street. He was 33 when he was elected sheriff in 1886. Later he was tax assessor and was postmaster. He was a Democrat, in contrast to his cousin, Samuel A. Conner, who was a Republican. John E. married Sally M. Roberson, daughter of Jesse C. and Mary M. Shepherd Roberson. They had five children, including Rachel R. who married Professor A.W. Shofner, Jesse Payne, John Emory Jr., Louis Homer and Sarah Jane. At the time of the yellow fever epidemic in 1878, the John E. Conners were living at the Belvoir section of Brainerd where Grace Episcopal Church was later erected. They later lived at 930 E. 10th St.

Samuel Haney Conner, younger brother of Asbury B. and Wesley Payne Conner, also lived at Brainerd with his wife, Nancy Catherine Gillespie. His wife was the daughter of another Irish family at Brainerd - Mark and Eliza Gillespie. Representative on the County Court for the Fifth District, Squire Conner was ""one of the safest and most conservative members.'' He was a self-taught physician, who voluntarily gave his services to relatives and neighbors without charge. In May of 1887, Squire Conner had ridden on horseback to attend to Mrs. Robert Gillespie. She was his niece and her husband was his brother-in-law (the younger brother of Nancy Catherine Gillespie Conner). A terrific storm came up and, while Squire Conner was taking shelter under a tree, he was hit by lightning and killed instantly. Squire Conner, who was 55, had six children. They were Mary E. "Mamie,'' Sally E., William Asbury, Thomas B., Lillie Belle and Purnell who married David T. Smith.

Like other members of his family, Squire Conner was a Methodist. The investigation of the death was carried out by his nephew, Sheriff John E. Conner. The widow of Squire Haney lived at their Brainerd home until she died in 1917 when she was almost 70. Sally and Lillie Belle remained unmarried. William Asbury Conner died at his home at 4608 Conner St. in 1940. His sons were Jack C. and Samuel H. Conner. Thomas B. Conner lived until 1967 when he was 84. He was a charter member of Brainerd Methodist Church. He married Ella Smith, daughter of John Wesley Smith and Frances Harris. They had a son, Thomas Haney Conner.
