Suggs Family

All I had at first was the name of my “Sugg/Suggs” ancestor and a about date of birth, place of birth. His name is Henry Suggs b 1795, North Carolina and his wife was Rachael Suggs 62 1797 North Carolina. When was digging up bones I found there was two Henry Suggs list in the same place, same about the same age in Census.

Here is the entire Census that found the two Henry Suggs.

Janet Green Ariciu family

Here is Henry Sugg family lineage lines:

The first mention of a William Sugg in Isle of Wight County, Virginia Deed Book l, Page 258 Is of a William Sugg "Mariner of the Cittie of Bristol" who bound himself unto John Brown on 20 March 1663.

On 9 December 1665 a William Sugg in Isle of Wight County, Virginia appears when a Thomas Woodward, aged 61, of Isle of Wight County, Virginia testified that William Sugg had Richard Penny as his security for appearance in Court (F#032021, Pg. 45). A few days later on 14 December 1665 Richard Izard, aged 54, of Isle of Wight County, Virginia testified that he and Richard Penny had talked and that William Sugg had "asked Mr. Penny to be his security" for the Court appearance (F#032021, Pg. 45). It has not yet been determined just why William Sugg had to make his appearance in Court. Nothing more is found on William Sugg in Isle of Wight County, Virginia until 29 April 1670 when William (L)Sugg and Thomas Gaymie witnessed the Will of James Bragg (WB 2, Pg. 88).

William Sugg again appears in Isle of Wight County, Virginia on 24 May 1673 when it was recorded that William Sugg was indebted to William Body (Boddie) for his tobacco crop of that year (DB 1, Pg. 276). Seven years later William Sugg "ye younger' was given one cow in Isle of Wight County, Virginia by John Pitt on 6 December 1680 (F#032021, Pg. 455).

The William Sugg first found in Isle of Wight County, Virginia in 1663, 1665, 1670, 1673 and 1680 may be a son or grandson of Peter (L)Sugg, Jr. Or was this William Sugg the one that was christened on 2 January 1622 in Somerset County, England who came from Bristol, England to America in 1654-63.

William SUGGE was born abt 1635 in Bristol, England. The name of his wife is so far unknown, but he had at least three sons: William SUGG Jr., George SUGG, and Joseph SUGG. It is possible that the children were also born in Bristol, but many histories say that they were originally from Norfolk County, Virginia.

William SUGGE's first appearance in American colonial records was on 20 Mar 1663 when he "[stood] firmly bound to John BROWN, Isle of Wight County of Virginia, for 58 pounds, 16 shillings of lawful money of England." This record could be either for indentured servitude, sponsorship to America, ora marriage bond. If it was sponsorship to America, then it is most likely that John BROWN was related somehow -- perhaps a half-brother or a cousin. If it was a marriage bond (and some histories say that William was married in 1663) then William's wife could have been a daughter of John BROWN.

On 23 Apr 1672 William SUGGE made some kind of agreement with John BROWN, Isle of Wight County, VA, for 29 pounds 8 shillings. On 24 May 1673 he was a Virginia planter indebted to William BODY (BODDIE) for 2704 pounds of good tobacco and cost to be paid,in the Isle of Wight County, VA (from Deed Book 2, page 276, Isle of Wight County, VA). On 24 May 1674 William SUGG sold land to Willaim BODDIE (from deed book 2, page 343, Isle of Wight County, VA).

William SUGG Jr. married twice --Ruth FENFORD (daughter of Thomas FENFORD and Sarah) and Mary (or Margaret). He had six children: William Jr., Thomas, Joseph, Moses, Margaret, and Sarah. Joseph SUGG, another son of William SUGGE, also married and had children. For more information on William Sugg family go to my worldconnect site.

The other son of William SUGGE was George SUGG. George was born abt 1665 and in abt 1690 he married Sarah IVES, daughter of Timothy IVES (son of Timothy IVES Sr. and Margaret) and Elizabeth HURLEY (daughter of Joseph HURLEY). They had children: Thomas, Margaret, Priscilla, Sarah, George, Aquilla, and Mary SUGG.

Now there is said to be one more son: Joseph Sugg (No contact after 1708 mentioned in will of Wm.)

Thomas Sugg Sr (I) was the son of George Sugg Sr and wife, Sarah Ives, of Norfolk County, Va. Thomas was born about 1690/95, and most likely in Norfolk Co. VA. He died about 1763 and most likely in Duplin Co. NC. (Duplin Co. NC created from New Hanover Co. NC 1750). About the year 1715 Thomas Sugg married Sarah Eldridge/Aldridge of Northumberland Co. VA. 2 Louisa Caroline b abt 1823 m'd James McNutt born 1810-1813 (Louisa Caroline would have been born in the early 1820's (though the 1850 census gave her age as 35 which which have placed her birth as early as 1815; that census record seems to be very incorrect, however, as 1860-1880 censuss all place her birth between 1820 and 1825. Both seem to have died between 1880 and 1900 since they appear in the earlier census but not the latter) The are great for names and place but age oh well that is another thing.

Suggs 25 Jun 1865 Jefferson MG . Mary Walker must been visiting someone else. or Mary other name is Margaret and I wrong about Margaret being William sister. For M W is living with William in 1880 Census

I found this unknown Suggs marries in Lawrence County, AL.

Andrew Suggs m'd Mary Maryberry Jan 10 1822 later the same year a Andrew Suggs m'd Mary Bolin Mar 10, 1822.

QUESTIONS: Is this the same Andrew? Next is the a brother of my Henry? I found a Mary Suggs age 60 in the 1850 Census without a husband. Is this Mary, Andrew wife? This Mary was born 1810. Now if husband was older and if he was Andrew then his age would be about 1802-1809. My Henry Suggs was born 1795 so he could have a brother Andrew age. This could be a reason that Andrew came to AL because his brother Henry is living here.
