Janet's Genealogy

William Monkres Family

William MUNKERS was born on 10 Mar 1810, TN d 18 Jul 1877 in Rusk, Cherokee Co. and was buried in on old family farm near F.M. Rd 758, off Loop 456 S, Cherokee Co, TX (near Rusk). I now have Copy of his last will and testment.

It is my belief that this man is the son of William and Rebecca Pendleton Munkress. The following is some the facts that a wonderful lady send to prove I am wrong and what found to prove her wrong. But as you read you see that I am right. William Munkers found Cherokee County, Texas is the son of William and Rebecca Pendlton Munkres

First many people think that my William had middle name but there is no prove him ever have middle or that it was Columbus. No one knows where this name came from for I have copy of his Ark land records, Census and Copy of this Land records in Texas and his will. There is No MENTION OF HIS MIDDLE NAME EVER HAVING COLUMBUS OR ANY OTHER MIDDLE NAME.

The some of Monkres family has a problem with this William being William b 1755 son. William and Rebecca Pendleton Munkres had daughter name Matilda who married Bluford Stanton. Their son is David mention below

David and Bluford Stanton were both in Civil War. Bluford was kidney infection, while David was wound at Fort Gibson, Mississippi.

Miss Vivin Stanton told Miss Petty the following story. I found the same story in Buchanon Co. History book.

"My father was wounded, but not seriously; our records show that he took a furlough about ten days before the war ended, since they could go anywhere in Cenfederate Territory; he went to his UNCLE WILLIAM MUNKERS in TEXAS, near the Lousiiana line and the war was over before his furlough was up. He stayed in Texas a year before coming home.

David joined the Co. G., Sixth MO, infanty, First MO, Brigade.

David was wound in the arm, Black River 17 May 1863 at Fort Gibson, Mississippi.

They want do know why this William came to be in Washington CO. Arkanas not with his family in Clay Co. MO.

I think my William might have gone Howard Co with William. William and Rebecca stay there for a while before going on to Clay Co. John Monkers, the brother of William is found in Howard in 1820. John is said to buried in Cameron Cememtery near Libtery, Missouri. No Proof.

There is no date for when William Monkres and his family came to Missouri. Their is land record that states William Monkers brought his land in 1829. But from what I can see William could be still in Howard and brought is land in Clay then move there.

If the they were still in Howard then William Munkres could meet Margaret Coulter there. For I found living in Howard County, Missouri in 1830, a John Colter with his family. He was gone by 1850. Can tell where he was born but if he who I think he is.

Archibald COULTER Born: ABT. 1751 at: County Tyrone, Ireland Married: ABT. 1771 Mary Platt in South Carolina Died: 1824 at: Todd County, KY

And

Now James can not be found in 1830 census in TN or Ark. The history of Washington County, ARK. State that James Coulter did not come to Arkansas until abt 1831.

William Munkres and Margaret Coulter could have been married in Missouri. For by 1831 James Coulter with married daughters, Ann Coulter with husband James B Russell, Margaret with husband William Munkres, all settled in Washington County, Ark.

James Coulter family and information can found his page and there is mention of some facts below as well

under Coulter page

As you read you see my finds and beliefs.

There was William JR list on land deeds in Clay Co., MO. This made Miss Petty and one other researcher think that this William the son William b 1755. Miss Petty notes that there was 4 William Munkers/Munkres etc found in Clay Co. Mo.

Miss Petty did not understand the name JR does not mean son of but away for the clerks in the county to tell the difference between an older William and young William. To this day some people do not know that JR does not mean son of William but to tell a young person from older person with same name apart in records.

Miss Petty makes a statement that William wife Rebecca is still living after the 1830 census for William. But it is clearly show a female age 10-15, which is Jane their daugther who marries Joseph Blanton in 1833. So Rebecca must have died after she sigh for the land that her and William brought in 1829.

Miss Petty goes on to tell about land records that a William and Rebecca Munkres buy and sale. The dates for this after 1830, so Rebecca is not Rebecca Pendleton but another Rebecca. Who could this be? It is John and Jenny Cameron Monkirs son William who marries Rebecca Lynch.

Miss Petty first state in book "That John children could read and write and so could his brother William's children. Later in her book she says "That only Uncle William Children read and write.

The Census of 1850 has a William Munkers age 36 as a single man with helpers. The Census for William SR in 1830 has no son of that age who could have been a 36-year-old man in 1850.

James, Redmond to have sons in that age group in 1830 and 1840 who could be this man. This William disappears by 1860 Census.

The Stanton family memebers of Miss Petty day think this could be William of TX.

The Stanton families were basing this on the fact that this man was gone and David stay with his Uncle William Munkers in TX. I have copy of the "THE HERITAGE OF BUCHANAN COUNTY MISSOURI" Where David tell his family about going to Texas to visit his Uncle William Munkers. The date for this was the end of the Civil War. Live with him for year, David work there until he got $20.00 brought a Mule and rode to St Louis.Sold the Mule and brought a ticket on the boat for home.Stay a while and when out to Oregan to visit family there.

There is no prove that the William of 1850 Census when to TX. a William Monkres/Monkirs married Miss Thorp? after the 1850 Census and move to Andrew County. He move back to Clay Co Mo after his wife had died and was back in the Clay by sometime in 1860s. As mention Under John Munkers family.

If Miss Petty is right that the William in 1850 census is the one who goes to Texas. (oh! by the way she look of William in Louisiana and found none) The only William Munkers in Texas is found in Cherokee County, TX not far for the state line. Tell how can William in 1850 Census in Missouri and in the 1850 Census in Texas. (fast horse!) Also if William in 1850 Census in Missouri is single and the one Texas children list with in the 1850 Census in TX. One of them is my ancestor Jame born 1848 Ark.

As I state on the William Munkres page. I have copy of the land deeds that the four of said deeds.

Miss Petty makes note the wives of these William didnt sign.

Back then wives didnt sign only if the land was hers by death of her love one. Must ladies in the 1700s, 1800s and part of 1900 dont own their own land, the only time that she might have land in her name if her husband left it her care for the young children. When the oldest male children became of age he got the said land.

On page 179 of Miss Petty book: She states again who she thinks William JR is found on land deeds and 1850 Census.

1820-1840 there were Two William with two Rebecca. I have no idea where she gets the two Rebecca between 1820-40 for Rebecca Pendleton Monkres is died by 1830. She is right here. When William brought his land in 1829 Rebecca sigh the land deed too. That is why in 1855, William Monkres sold his land for $900 and had to have some sigh that he knew Rebecca Monkres and she was his wife.

I must state here from 1829 to 1840 William Sr was living his own land but by the 1840 Census he was living with his daughter Matilda Munkres Stanton in Platte Co. MO. As I said before he sold his land before he died in 1855

In 1829 William Munkres brought land signed by Andrew Jackson. This is William born 1775.

In 1846 William Munkres JR Known to David Ferril. Since the Ferrill is know to John Munkirs family could this be William Munkirs of Richard Munkirs. This William sold the land to Richard Munkirs. (JR does mean son but a William Mounkers young then older William Monkres living here)

In Feb 1855 William and Rebecca sold land to Mr Tuley for $900.00. There was man who sign that F S Williams states that he knew her. The only reason for this is Rebecca is dead.

In Jun 1835 William SR and Rebecca sold land to William Munkers Jr. This William could be William who married Miss Thorp? after the 1850 Census and move to Andrew County. He move back to Clay Co Mo after his wife had died and was back in the Clay by sometime in 1860s. As mention under John Munkers family.

Could this be William and Rebecca of old? I do think so for Rebecca Pendleton Monkrs has past before this date. William and Rebecca name should be spelled Munkirs not Munkers

In 1856 William and Rebecca sold land to David Frampton. Look for Frampton link under John Munkirs. David Frampton marries into John Monkres family. Look here William and Rebecca is sell land. William Monkres b 1755 is dead in 1855 and Rebecca died in before 1830. Well then who is this. How about John and Jenny Cameron Monkers son William who is married to Rebecca Lynch

In 1857 William Munkres sold Benjamin F Marr for $1500 that William Munkress Sr Bought. Could this William Munkress Sr be John son William for William Munkres b 1755 is died making John Munkers son William a SR.

Miss Petty states that one of these men was JR. There is no mention on the land deed to tell this. She feels that one them was JR the son of SR. Poor Miss Petty she did not understand. She did wonderful job in life time but she was human and we do make mistakes

I have read and reread her book. She makes mistakes and state that never when back and chance them. So one place she states one thing and later chance her mind. Just like we do with new fines.

I know that William Monkres/Munkrss of TN, living in Arkansas from 1831-1847s moved to TX in 1848. James Coulter SR was help William move to TX,when gun fight over the Cattle and James was kill near Little Rock, Arkansas. I know by the 1850 Census William was in TX.

Please notice that William with wife Rebecca is not list as SR but JR for William Monkres born 1755 is died.

In 1858 a William Munkres sold 32 acres to Mr.Burgress. Samuel Tillery had to sware that he knew him. Now look below William Munkres Sr had more land for he brought in 1838.

In 1856 John H and Helen of Delaware sold land to a William SR. Ok who this William for William SR is dead by then.

In 1857 The Poley family sold land to a William SR. again Mr Tillery knew him.

In 1865 William SEN SR and Rebecca Munkers, his wife sold land to William Mitchell. James Reed said he knew Rebecca. This tells me that Rebecca Lynch Munkres is died too.

I notice that ever time William and Rebecca sold land Rebecca has to have some one to know her.

SO WILLIAM WHEN HE BROUGHT LAND WAS JR.

In 1836 William Munkres brought land. This is SR owning more land.

This is strange: William Munkers and Rebecca Munkers bought land from Martha Ann Munkers and her Heirs Alvis Munkers desceased for $400. Ann and Alvis is decsend of John Monkrs

The legal papers mention her middle name as Ann but Rebecca of William and Rebecca Munkres middle was Martha.

In the Census for William Monkres, you will find William Monkres SR, William JR and William. Sr was the oldest in that area, The next oldest was JR and then just plain William. Does this make the father son, NO just older and younger

READ THIS AND YOU WILL FIND OUT WHO WILLIAM JR ON THE CENSUS WAS.

In 1850 William Munkres, the justice of peace, said that Richard and Malinda Munkres appeared before him when they sold their land to William Barnes.

Here Miss Petty goes again. This this man was William of TX.

I have question has any one ever proven that there was a William Munkres in Clay or Platte Co. MO who was a Justice of the Peace there.

Remember mine is Ark. as a Fed. Judge

It has been sent to me the many times William Munkers JP was in Clay to marry people.

I will start with this the county were I live right now. In the 1980s we had a Judge and Sheriff who could not read or write. They others to read and write for them. If they can do now why not back.

Please not how many times a William JP is mention in records. This why I think we a speaking of more then one William.

William SR has been living with his daughter Matilda Munkers Stanton since 1840.

Wm. the JP performed the following marriages in Clay Co Mo. I think William son of John is the JP. For remember Miss Petty said John Monkres son could read and write.

Some family reseacher think they tell the different in Monkres familes is the different in ways William's last name was spelled. I do not believe this for it just how the clerk spelled in the records. or How children want to spell it or when they when to school and the teacher here it Mounkers, Monkers. Sometime spelling does help but always read below

When my William Monkres purchase his land in Cherokee Co.,TX 1852 his name is spelled Muncus. It is also spelled Munkus when he bought land in 1870, then in 1875 on another, it is spelled Munkers. In 1854 it was spelled Munkers. This is only the records in Cherokee Co.,TX and I am sure when he bought land other places the spelling was not always spelled the same

The marriage license for William and Elvira Minervia and in the top portion of the marriage it has his name spelled William Munkers or Munkirs and then on the bottom portion of the license it has his name spelled William Munkis.

On other things I have seen it Munkers so it is just how that person chose to spell it apparently. On the 1860 census it is spelled Monkus.

On Missouri Ann's marriage license the top portion spells it Monkers and the bottom portion spells it Munkus.

On Marium Tennessee marriage license it has Mounkres. The census sheet in 1880 has it spelled Monkers, this is after his death.

Later in 1940, William's youngest daughter (2nd marriage) Mollie sent to Kirby Munkers a birthday card and spelled his name Monkress on the envelope

My Munkers spelled Munkres; Munkress; Monkress; etc

So even in this family the name was spelled differant

The families who move with Coulter family from TN to ARK

I was sent a copy of letter address to Dear Mrs. Brown from Conrad Russell.

I have been away from home quite a bit lately and am late getting your inquiry concerning the William Munkers

Now here is my Munkers etc family history and facts.

William and Margaret Munkers are listed on the record book of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1832-35. Some of the records have been lost. I believe I have copies of all the existing records.

The Coulter family came to Ark in 1830. Settled on a place about one mile from the present village of Cane Hill. The Munkers may have came with the Coulter family or with the Russell, Wright and other Kin from TN. I Believe Margaret Munkers was a daughter of James Coulter and wife. Maurcie Wiright and James Byant Russell (my greatgrandfather) also married Coulter girls Ruth Wright and Ann Russell. (Ann and Ruth was James Coulter daughter too).

The Munkers and Russells joined the church in 1832 September. The day not given this leads me to believe that Munkers and Russells came the same year, Probably together. They came from Knox County and Rhea County, TN. Were farmers or owned land. The Coulter bought horses in ARK and sold them in Texas. Some of the Kin helped to drive them to Texas.

My grandfather Samuel P Russell was a Confederate soldier. Captured sent to Rock Island Prison. Exchanged at Waco, Texas in 1864 so weak he could hardly walk. I have heard him tell that his Uncle William Munkers who was living near Waco. Kept him until the end of the war and he regained his health. (Why couldnt David Stanton done the same)

I would be interested in hearing more about the family. I hope this information is helpful. If I can help with information on any of the families in that group I will be glad to do so. Sincerely, Conrad Russell.

Also I have copy of a type letter from Edit or Edilt to Hester and Thurman.

I should have sent you this letter from Conrad Russell long ago. As you can see, it is a year old, I keep pushing on to more research and dont get around to telling every one in the family what, I have found.

So-------your great grandmothers maiden name was Margaret Coulter. The farm she and William Munkers lived on in Arkansas was across the corner from her parents, the James Coulters. The few records I have seen of any Coulters say they came from Ireland, which would explain Jim Henrys Irish Brogue.

My family was pleased that you were interested enough to come to the Enid reunion last year, I was sorry I couldnt be there. I hope all is well with you. Sincerely Edilt ? date 25 June 1979.

I have a copies of the 1840 Census in Washington CO., AR and 1850,1860,1870 Census of Cherokee CO., TX for the Munkers family.

*William MUNKERS was born on 10 Mar 1810 in Campbell Co., TN.? or VA

The Notable Southern Families gives William's date of birth as 1812, other family members give it as 1814, Loleda has 1810. He was buried in 1877 in on old family farm near F.M. Rd 758, off Loop 456 S, Cherokee Co, TX (near Rusk). He died on 18 Jul 1877 in Rusk, Cherokee Co., TX. Loleda has 24 Aug 1877 for death date. WFT#6975 Vol.3 has date of birth 1812 and date of death after 1855 in Rusk, Cherokee Co., TX. Married Margaret COULTER was born about 1811 in TN. She died on 10 Jun 1863 in Rusk, Cherokee Co., TX. Margaret Coulter parents were James Coulter and Catherine Tunnell. For the Tunnell and Coulter family go to the page.

here for Coulter

William(3) and Margaret moved to Texas in the 1840's.

William and his family had settled on land in the Arkansas Territory before Arkansas became a state in 1836. The Pre-emption Act of 1830 gave thousands of squatters, who like William, had claimed the land, lived on it, improved it, but did not have legal rights to it, the opportunity to buy as much as 160 acres for as little as $1.25 an acre.

William bought his property located near Cane Hill, Washington Co., AR. In 1847 he sold it and moved his family to Texas. He was married to Margaret COULTER in 1831 in Cane Hill, Washington Co., AR.

Most information for this family comes from Thurman Monkres, from my research too and others too. I have copy of William Munkres and James Coulter land records form here.

The Arkansas Land Patents:

William Munkers own the following land

The land was near Fayeteville, Ar. 80,000 acres and 40,230 acres.

James Coulter Jr or Sr.own land near Fayeteville, Ar. 160,000 acres, 80,000 acres and 80,000 acres. Margaret father was James Coulter.

In 1847 William and his wife Margaret sold their farm. The contract was hand-written on Feb 11, 1847 by a Justice of the peace who spelled their names William and Margaret Munken. Four days later at the closing of the deal on Feb 5, 1847, he spelled their names as William and Margaret Mankins. But the legal description of the land is the same as that on the document at Little Rock.

Jim Henry served in the confederate army. there is a copy of his military file and application for penison at the Oklahoma Historical Society in Oklahoma City. The following is where James H was captured.

Battle of Stone's River at Murfreeboro,Tennessee

IN BRIEF A fierce baffle took place at Stones River between December 31, 1862 and January 2, 1863. General Braggs Confederates withdrew after the battle, allowing General Rosecrans and the Union army to control middle Tennessee. Although the battle was tactically indecisive, it provided a much-needed boost to the North after the defeat at Fredericksburg. Lincoln later wrote to General Rosecrans, I can never forget [..] you gave us a hardeamed victory, which had there been a defeat instead, the nation could scarcely have lived over. The 570-acre National Battlefield includes Stones River National Cemetery, established in 1865, with more than 6,000 Union graves; and the Hazen Monument, believed to be the oldest Civil War monument. Portions of Fortress Rosecrans, a large earthen fort constructed after the battle, still stand and are preserved and interpreted by the National Park Service. Much of the nearly 4,000-acre battlefield is in private hands.

CONFEDERATE TEXAS TROOPS

10th Regiment, Texas Cavalry (Locke's)

10th Cavalry Regiment was organized with about 900 men during the late summer of 1861. Many of its members were recruited in the towns of Quitman and Tyler, and the counties of Upshur, Rusk, and Cherokee. For the first few months it served in Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana, then was dismounted after crossing the Mississippi River. After fighting at Richmond, the unit was assigned to General Ector's Brigade in the Army of Tennessee. It participated in numerous battles from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, endured Hood's winter operations in Tennessee, and aided in the defense of Mobile. Ths regiment totalled 565 effectives during the spring of 1862 and lost thirty-four percent of the 350 engaged at Murfreesboro. Very few surrendered on May 4, 1865. The field officers were Colonels James M. Barton and W.D. Craig, and Majors Wiley B. Ector and Hulum D. E. Redwine.

Richmond; Location: Madison County; Campaign: Confederate Heartland Offensive (1862); Date(s): August 29-30, 1862

Principal Commanders: Maj. Gen. William Nelson [US]; Maj. Gen. E. Kirby Smith [CS]; Forces Engaged: 1st and 2nd Brigades, Army of Kentucky [US]; Army of Kentucky [CS]; Estimated Casualties: 5,650 total (US 4,900; CS 750)

Description: In Maj. Gen. Kirby Smiths 1862 Confederate offensive into Kentucky, Brig. Gen. Patrick R. Cleburne led the advance with Col. John S. Scotts cavalry out in front. The Rebel cavalry, while moving north from Big Hill on the road to Richmond, Kentucky, on August 29, encountered Union troopers and began skirmishing. After noon, Union artillery and infantry joined the fray, forcing the Confederate cavalry to retreat to Big Hill. At that time, Brig. Gen. Mahlon D. Manson, who commanded Union forces in the area, ordered a brigade to march to Rogersville, toward the Rebels. Fighting for the day stopped after pursuing Union forces briefly skirmished with Cleburnes men in late afternoon. That night, Manson informed his superior, Maj. Gen. William Nelson, of his situation, and he ordered another brigade to be ready to march in support, when required. Kirby Smith ordered Cleburne to attack in the morning and promised to hurry reinforcements (Churchills division). Cleburne started early, marching north, passed through Kinston, dispersed Union skirmishers, and approached Mansons battle line near Zion Church. As the day progressed, additional troops joined both sides. Following an artillery duel, the battle began, and after a concerted Rebel attack on the Union right, the Yankees gave way. Retreating into Rogersville, the Yankees made another futile stand at their old bivouac. By now, Smith and Nelson had arrived and taken command of their respective armies. Nelson rallied some troops in the cemetery outside Richmond, but they were routed. Nelson and some men escaped but the Rebels captured approximately 4,000 Yankees. The way north was open.

Result(s): Confederate victory

Murfreesboro; Other Names: Wilkinson Pike, Cedars; Location: Rutherford County; Campaign: Franklin-Nashville Campaign (1864); Date(s): December 5-7, 1864

Principal Commanders: Maj. Gen. Lovell H. Rousseau and Brig. Gen. Robert Milroy [US]; Maj. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest [CS]; Forces Engaged: District of Tennessee (forces in Murfreesboro area; approx. 8,000) [US]; Forrests Cavalry, Bate's Infantry Division, and Brig. Gen. Claudius Searss and Brig. Gen. Joseph B. Palmers Infantry Brigades (6,500-7,000) [CS]; Estimated Casualties: 422 total (US 225; CS 197)

Description: In a last, desperate attempt to force Maj. Gen. William T. Shermans army out of Georgia, Gen. John Bell Hood led the Army of Tennessee north toward Nashville in November 1864. Although he suffered a terrible loss at Franklin, he continued toward Nashville. In operating against Nashville, he decided that destruction of the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad and disruption of the Union army supply depot at Murfreesboro would help his cause. He sent Maj. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, on December 4, with an expedition, composed of two cavalry divisions and Maj. Gen. William B. Bates infantry division, to Murfreesboro. On December 2, Hood had ordered Bate to destroy the railroad and blockhouses between Murfreesboro and Nashville and join Forrest for further operations; on December 4, Bates division attacked Blockhouse No. 7 protecting the railroad crossing at Overall Creek, but Union forces fought it off. On the morning of the 5th, Forrest headed out toward Murfreesboro, splitting his force, one column to attack the fort on the hill and the other to take Blockhouse No. 4, both at La Vergne. Upon his demand for surrender at both locations, the Union garrisons did so. Outside La Vergne, Forrest hooked up with Bates division and the command advanced on to Murfreesboro along two roads, driving the Yankees into their Fortress Rosencrans fortifications, and encamped in the city outskirts for the night. The next morning, on the 6th, Forrest ordered Bates division to move upon the enemys works. Fighting flared for a couple of hours, but the Yankees ceased firing and both sides glared at each other for the rest of the day. Brig. Gen. Claudius Searss and Brig. Gen. Joseph B. Palmers infantry brigades joined Forrests command in the evening, further swelling his numbers. On the morning of the 7th, Maj. Gen. Lovell Rousseau, commanding all of the forces at Murfreesboro, sent two brigades out under Brig. Gen. Robert Milroy on the Salem Pike to feel out the enemy. These troops engaged the Confederates and fighting continued. At one point some of Forrests troops broke and ran causing disorder in the Rebel ranks; even entreaties from Forrest and Bate did not stem the rout of these units. The rest of Forrests command conducted an orderly retreat from the field and encamped for the night outside Murfreesboro. Forrest had destroyed railroad track, blockhouses, and some homes and generally disrupted Union operations in the area, but he did not accomplish much else. The raid on Murfreesboro was a minor irritation.

Result(s): Union victory

Syble Woods email me this wonder fine.

Syble listened to the tape of her Dad talking to Uncle Thurmond Monkres in 1985. Syble has the original tape and can understand a lot of the things they are talking about on the tape. Her Mom and Dad made a visit in 1985 to Oklahoma and Mother taped some of the conversation. Uncle Thurmond was 78 at this time and Syble's dad was 73. Syble says "I have listened to the tape several times. I am going to tell you some of the things I heard yesterday.

They did say that Samuel and Uncle Pope (Robert Pope) did not stay in Oklahoma like the others members of the family did. They mention one of the men in the family, and I could not understand the name, but said he was 6' 6" tall and weighed about 300 lbs., so this is probably the large man in the picture of my Grandfather, Kirby. Uncle Thurmond also said that Samuel died from a heart attack about 1928. They talked about James Henry (Uncle Jim), coming to visit Virgle Pope a lot, and really thought a lot of Virgle. They mentioned that he came back to Cherokee Co, Tx. after the war and visited a lot here after the war, until Virgle's death. Sometime he would stay a week and other times he would stay 2 or 3 weeks at a time. "Uncle Jim" was living on a limited income and they seem to think that Virgle helped him financialy. Virgle had a store in Jacksonville, and "Uncle Jim" would walk from Virgle's home to the store to visit and would also walk to a store owned by Elvira's son from her first marriage, Millard Filmore Spraggins. He spent his nights with Virgle Pope and my Dad and 3 of his sisters visited one of the times that he was there, in 1920. My Dad, Harold, slept with James Henry about 5 nights. Their mother died in 1918, so I am sure they enjoyed their visit. My Dad could also remember that Virgle, his wife Lavenia (they married in 1917) and "Uncle Jim" came in Virgle's car to visit them when they lived about 10 miles from Jacksonville in a little community called Gallatin (my brother lives there now). He did not give a date, but it would have been after my Grandmother's death in Feb. 1918.

(Syble said she wrote you about my Dad sleeping 5 nights with James Henry. I have listened to the tape again, my Dad said that he and 3 of his sisters went to spend Christmas with Virgle and Livenia and when they got there James Henry was already there. They didn't know that he was coming. You know that children without a mother at Christmas were very happy to get to go somewhere for Christmas.~~Syble )

My Dad also told the story about Virgle Pope asking my Grandfather Kirby if he had life insurance. This was after Grandmother's death. Kirby said no, he did not, so Virgle said, let's go around the corner to the insurance office and we will both take out some life insurance. They turned my Grandfather down because they said he had leakage of the heart, he was 50 years old. They sold Virgle life insurance, he was about 52. About one month later Virgle died from a heart attack. Grandaddy was about 94 when he died in 1964. All of this happened in 1921. The night Virgle died, Kirby was living with his family in Gallatin, next door to the school. A neighbor came to tell them that they had received a call and Virgle had died from a heart attack. My Grandaddy got up and rode a horse 10 miles to Virgle's home and visited with the family awhile. He rode 10 miles back on the little horse and then got up before daylight and rode the horse back to Jacksonville to Virgle's home again. My Dad said he could remember that it was a very dark night.

Kirby, my Grandfather, was about the same age as a lot of the children of his brothers and sisters, but they still called him Uncle Kirb.

On this tape, Maude Wortham (maybe Thurnond's sister) was also visiting. She is the one that rode with them to see Thurmond. Maude mentioned someone called Uncle Charlie. They said after Uncle Charlie died, his wife went to Oregon to live, (I guess this would have been with relatives) and stayed there until she died.

They talked about Aunt Tennie (Miriam Tennessee Monkress, Mitchell, Langston). My Grandfather came to Oklahome about 1887 and lived a while with Aunt Tennie and Uncle Bud Langston. He helped Uncle Bud and one of his boys plow a big corn crop. My Grandfather (Kirby) would have been 17 years old. Uncle Thurmond mentions Bud Langston growing peanuts for the State. They also mentioned that W. F. and Mary Lou (Molly) Murphy would come and visit them, and would always come in a buggy, and on Sunday afternoons. I think they lived in Tipton, OK. at that time. (This would be Carrol Murphy's Grandmother) They also talk about "Aunt Zude", this would be Missouri Ann Monkress, Mills Murray. They said that she was crippled. She had been to a Revival and was shouting on her way home. She stepped in a hole and broke her ankle and always had a limp after that. Walter Murray, Missouri Ann's son, and my Grandfather, Kirby worked and saved their money and bought a place together. They both lived there with their Mothers, Missouri Ann and Elvira. My Mother still lives on some of that property today.

My Dad (Harold) also tells Uncle Thurmond that Bessie (daughter of Margaret Monkress and Phillio Guinn, Redmond (not sure of the spelling) and his brother Bill are all buried at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Rusk, Tx. My Dad said that he met Redmond in Witchita Falls Tx. in 1929 and he was in a wheelchair. Uncle Thurmond call some man in the family Doc. and also called him Bill. I do not know who they were talking about.

"Doc" was one of Robert Pope Monkres's sons. His wife was named Zula and lived in Gainesville. Doc would have been one of my dad's uncles. I always heard him referred to as "Uncle Doc." says Duane Monkres

O.R.-- SERIES I--VOLUME XX/1 [S# 29] DECEMBER 26, 1862-JANUARY 5, 1863.--The Stone's River or Murfreesborough, Tenn., Campaign. No. 284--Report of Col. M. F.. Locke, C. S. Army, Tenth Texas Cavalry (dismounted).

CAMP NEAR SHELBYVILLE, TENN., January 10, 1863.

Brig. Gen. M.D. ECTOR, Comdg. First Brigade, McCown's Division, Army of Tennessee

DEAR GENERAL: In compliance with your order (No. --) of the 9th instant, I have the honor to submit the following report, showing the operations of the Tenth Regiment Texas Cavalry in the late battles in front of Murfreesborough:

On Tuesday evening, January [December] 30, [1862.1 while our battery and that of the enemy were firing directly across the right wing of my regiment, a ball from a rifle cannon of the enemy struck the cedar-rail barricade in front of the command, and timber from the fence bruised four of the privates and slightly wounded Lieut. J. B. Griffin, of Company C, who was severely [wounded] the following day. Seeing that the situation of the Tenth Regiment was more exposed than that of any other in the brigade on that evening, owing to the facts that a gap of several hundred yards intervened between the right wing (this regiment being on the right of the brigade) and the next command, to wit, General Smith's brigade, on our right, and that powerful efforts were being made by the enemy on that evening to gain a direct range of the line of the Texas Brigade with their artillery, and later in the day the enemy having shifted their position and placed their battery directly in front of this regiment, it was apparent that the fence which had obstructed the sight of the enemy would serve as an auxiliary in the enemy's hands if our position was discovered. Knowing this, although the weather was very inclement and disagreeable, I did not allow any fire, and the blankets having been left at camp, the men suffered very much; and but for the fact that they had been lying on their arms without sleep for two nights previous, sleep would have been impossible.

Having been kept in a silent, still position for two days and nights during disagreeable weather, on the morning of December 31,1862, when orders came that the command would move forward, it was difficult to restrain the expression of joy and outburst of feeling manifested by the men at an opportunity being presented upon an open field (such as lay before us)of relieving ourselves from this unhappy condition, and of deciding the fate of the Confederacy to the extent that a little regiment was able to go. It will be remembered that, in the first charge made on the morning of the 31st, my orders required that I should keep close on General McNair's brigade, who had just moved into the gap alluded to on the right of my regiment, and that in doing so it threw the center of the Tenth Regiment directly in front of the enemy's battery, consisting of six brass pieces of Superior quality, which opened upon our lines immediately after leaving the cedar fence barricade; and as there was no obstruction between this command and the enemy's lines in that direction, it must be that the houses, shade trees, and fencing on the left and the cedar timber and fencing on the right sheltered to some extent the brave troops on each side of us, causing the disparity in the number killed and wounded in the different regiments of the division and brigade. For some 400 yards before we drove the enemy from their position immediately in rear of the first battery and captured the same, my regiment marched in full view of the infantry and artillery, and before the sun rose we numbered of killed and wounded some 80 men.

At this point I will mention an incident in this bloody conflict: The enemy's lines having been formed immediately in our front, their standard-bearer, directly in front of mine, was waving his flag, casting it forward, and, by various motions, urging the Abolition column forward, when Sergt. A. Sims, flag-bearer of this regiment, discovered him and pressed forward with incredible speed directly toward the enemy's banner, and, on reaching within a pace or less of his adversary, he planted the Confederate flag firmly upon the ground with one hand and with a manly grasp reached the other after the flag-staff held by his enemy; but the other gave back, and in that moment they both fell in the agonies of death, waving their banners above their heads until their last expiring moments. My flag-bearer having fallen, and there being but one of my old color-guard left, Sergt. James T. McGee was only spared to advance a few paces toward his banner, when another of our noblest and bravest men fell to rise no more until aroused by the Trump of God to come to judgment. At this moment Private Manning, of Company H, gathered the flagstaff and rushed to the front with a spirit and nerve sufficient for any calling, and bore the same aloft throughout the day.

Two stand of colors are known to have been taken by this regiment, and, it is believed, three; but as all were sent to the rear by the wounded and the infirmary corps, I have not had opportunity to look them up. Of Major (Acting Lieutenant-Colonel) Craig and senior Captain (Acting Major) Redwine and Adjutant [J. J.J Jarvis, I will say that they all of them proved themselves fully equal to the emergency on that occasion; and, in my opinion, the display of valor and unflinching bravery in the conflict on December 31, 1862, has not been surpassed upon this continent.

The loss sustained by this command will foot up as follows, to wit: The number of commissioned officers] engaged was 20, and of that number 11 were killed, wounded, or left in the enemy's lines. The total number in battle was about 350 men. Of that number 117 were either left in the enemy's lines, killed, or wounded.

As stated, we captured, it is confidently believed, three stand of the enemy's colors and at least six pieces of brass cannon. In conclusion, I wish not by the mention of names to make distinction between men where all acted so nobly, but it is with peculiar pride I state the fact that all of my men knew their rights and dared to defend them, reckless of hazard or consequence.

All of which is most respectfully submitted. M. F. LOCKE, Colonel, Commanding Tenth Regiment Texas Cavalry.
