1776 NEW BOSTON Census

My favorite contributor to this webpage, Nancy Smith, E-mail [email protected], sent us a list of names of 109 men from New Boston listed in the New Hampshire 1776 Census. This data is extracted from a book published by Jay Mack Holbrook. The names below are from his book which lists these names from the Association Test of 1776. The Association Test consisted of a signature by all New Hampshire adult men asking if they were for or against the Revolutionary War. Of the 9,348 NH men who signed, 91.6% were opposed to the British invasion (i.e. for the Rev War). In New Boston, 109 men signed and 56.8% opposed the British (62 signed and 47 were non-signers). All the men who opposed the war in New Boston did not give any explanation of the reason, such as religion, etc. The original documents are in the Misc. Revolutionary Documents of New Hampshire Vol. XXX of State Papers of New Hampshire, edited by Albert Stillman Balchellor, 1910, pages 1-167. The New Boston men are on pages 94-96. The original spellings from Mr. Holbrook's book are listed. This book is copyrighted, but permission was granted by Mr. Holbrook to publish this list of names here at the New Boston website.

Please visit Mr. Holbrook's website, Archive Publishing to see what wonderful books he offers New England researchers. You might want to purchase two other books he publishes: New Hampshire 1732 Census and New Hampshire Residents 1633-1699.
