A Product Advertisement for PE-RU-NA (drug): featuring a testimony by David. L. Jaycox
This flyer was published in 1907 by S. B. Hartman, M.D. by the American Lithographic Co., New York & Chicago. It is an advertisement for PE-RU-NA, a drug product to cure catarrhal ( mucous membrane) ailments using no narcotics (although another source claimed it was 28% alcohol). This product was produced by the The PE-RU-NA Drug Mfg. Co. of Columbus , Ohio. Throughout the 32 page booklet, various persons have supplied testimonies as to the beneficial effect of PE-RU-NA and how it has cured their disease of the head, nose, stomach, kidneys, etc.
David L. Jaycox's testimony is found under Kidneys and Bladder (Page 8):
"An Old War Veteran Finds Relief in PE-RU-NA. Mr. David L. Jaycox, Chaplain Clarinda I. O. G. T. and Chaplain G. A. R., 865 Broadway, Oakland, Cal., writes:
I am an old war veteran. I contracted severe bladder and kidney trouble. I spent hundreds of dollars and consulted a host of doctors trying to get relief, but neither did me any good. Finally some of my comrades who had been cured by Peruna advised me to try it. I at once bought a bottle and found it helped me so much that I kept using it for nearly four months. Peruna has proven the best medicine I ever used. My pains are gone and I believe myself to be cured. I feel well and would not be without a bottle of Peruna in time of need for ten times its cost."
His testimony and photograph are pictured below. Mr. Jaycox's testimony was included in many advertisements run by the company and reprinted in newspapers across the United States.
