The Descendants of  William Campbell  (1718 - 1793)
of  Bergen County New Jersey

Generation One

1. William1 Campbell was a Scotsman and born on 23 Jan 1718 at Ulster, Ireland according to his tombstone. He married Elizabeth Demarest, daughter of David Demarest and Matie DeBaun, on 19 Aug 1736 at Schraalenburgh (now the Bergenfield and Dumont area), Bergen County, New Jersey. He died on 9 Oct 1793 at age 75. He was buried at South Church, Bergenfield, Bergen County, New Jersey; The Demarest genealogy lists the place of burial as "South Schraalenburgh Churchyard" and implies both are buried there.

He emigrated circa 1735 from Ulster, Ireland; The fact that he married at the age of 18 years, signifies that he emigrated probably when in his early teens and could not have been in this country very long when he married. [GFC comment]

It seems apparent that William Campbell did not come to America alone, but was accompanied by one brother and two sisters, as far as is known. Their names appear in contemporary records and with the Old Bridge area, and were definitely of William's generation. They were James Campbell, Catherine Campbell, and Nensje (Nancy) Campbell.

During the Rev. War William lost a long list of goods and chattels, sized by the British Enemy as evidenced by the British Damage claim, page 299 #16, on file in the N.J. State Library. Amount of the claim was over 409 Pounds.

Cobham and was part of the 2nd Brigade of General Thomas L. Kane, 2nd Division of Brig. General John W. Geary under the XII Corps of Maj. General Henry W. Slocum. In mid June 1863, they were stationed at Fairfax Virginia. When General Lee moved the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia northward through the Shenandoah Valley toward Pennsylvania the Union Army followed. Orlando's unit moved from Fairfax to Leesburg, Virginia in one week, to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia (23 miles) in another four days, and then two days later to Littlestown, Pennsylvania, a distance of 49 miles, where they were bivouacked when the battle began on July first.

On the first day as the scouting forces of both sides clashed, the Union forces were severely beaten and forced to fall back through the town of Gettysburg to take up defensive positions south of town. Here the XII Corps including the 111th Pennsylvania Volunteers came up via a forced march of eleven miles late in the day and dug-in on Culp's Hill, which was the anchor of the right and northern end of the Union line. This position was a very important because it protected the entire rear of the Union Army. The Federal troops here occupied a strong and strongly fortified series of lines. The hill abounded in steep declivities, terraces of rock, and dense clumps of timber, which were made all the more formidable by breastworks and well-built rifle-pits and other forms of defensive works, the Union troops erected. Before the second day had ended they had transformed a natural fortress into one that could not be flanked or stormed.

The fighting on Culp's Hill began on Thursday July 2nd when the Rebels attacked in force at 9 PM. By midnight when the fighting ceased, the South had managed to get into the trenches of the Union forces. Since this put the entire army at risk, the North counterattacked on Friday the 3rd at 4 AM. Fighting was furious for about seven hours but the South was forced off the hill and the right flank of the Union army was stabilized. It was during this fighting that Orlando was killed. For many years after the battle the district included in the Union right flank at Culp's Hill contained frightful tokens of the havoc wrought by the bloody contests waged in the woods and among the rocks on Thursday evening and Friday morning.

Of course, of the last day of fighting, July 3rd, also saw perhaps the most famous charge in American military history, Pickett's charge against the center of the Union line that was the turning point of the war. He was buried at Gettysburg National Cemetery, Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania, Grave 49 in Section D.
