Although the Clifford's are not directly family to the Cahill and Fahey lines, they are part of our tangled roots. A Clifford brother and sister married a Sughrue sister and brother combination and thus we have a number of double cousins. Because of the closeness of the Clifford's to the Fahey's I have included them here as part of our family genealogy.

Generation One

1. Jeremiah¹ Clifford was born in 1828 at Ireland. He married Catherine McGillicuddy, daughter of Daniel McGillicuddy and Mary Moriarty, circa 1853. He died on 12 Apr 1901 at Cambridge, Middlesex County, Mass.

Children of Jeremiah¹ Clifford and Catherine McGillicuddy were as follows:

• i. Mary²; born 1854 at Ohio; died 1871.
• 2. ii. John Dumas, born 22 Oct 1855 at Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio; married Katherine P. Sullivan.
• iii. Timothy J.; born 1857 at Mass; died 1893; also have his death as 1900?
• iv. William H. M.D.; died 4 Oct 1912.
• v. Michael H.; born 1861 at Maine; died 4 Nov 1912.
• vi. Elizabeth; born 1863 at Maine; died 4 May 1952; also have her death as 1947?
• vii. Jeremiah Ambrose; born 17 Oct 1865 at Maine; died 1938 at Montana.

J. A. Clifford left Lewiston circa 1872 and moved to Butte, Silver Bow County, Montana.

• viii. Katherine; born 1866 at Maine; died 10 Aug 1956; also have her death as 5/4/1952?
• ix. Cornelius; born 1867 at Maine; died 17 Oct 1921 at Charlestown, Suffolk County, Mass.
• x. Margaret E.; born 1869; died 1870.

Generation Two

2. John Dumas² Clifford (Jeremiah¹) was born on 22 Oct 1855 at Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. He married Katherine P. Sullivan, daughter of Patrick Sullivan and Mary Buckley, on 10 Jun 1884. He died on 2 Aug 1941 at Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine, at age 85. He died on 23 Aug 1941 at Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine, at age 85.

Children of John Dumas² Clifford and Katherine P. Sullivan were as follows:

• i. Jeremiah³; born 17 Oct 1885; died 14 Dec 1886 at age 1; buried at Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine.
• 3. ii. Louise, married Edgar T. Reynolds.
• 4. iii. John David II, born 15 May 1887 at Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine; married Lucille Smith.
• 5. iv. William H., born 14 Feb 1889 at Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine; married Alice Emma Sughrue.
• 6. v. Catherine Ruth, born 29 Jun 1899 at Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine; married John Joseph Sughrue.

Generation Three

3. Louise³ Clifford (John², Jeremiah¹) married Edgar T. Reynolds. She died on 29 Dec 1985.

4. John David³ Clifford II (John², Jeremiah¹) was born on 15 May 1887 at Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine. He married Lucille Smith on 14 Jul 1915 at Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan. He died on 18 Nov 1956 at Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine, at age 69. He was buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine.

Children of John David³ Clifford II and Lucille Smith both born at Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine, were as follows:

• 9. ii. John D. III, born 29 Jun 1920; married Athena Kesaris.

5. William H.³ Clifford (John², Jeremiah¹) was born on 14 Feb 1889 at Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine. He married Alice Emma Sughrue, daughter of Michael Joseph Sughrue and Elizabeth Frances Quinn, on 22 Jun 1926. He died on 9 Sep 1972 at home, Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine, at age 83. He was buried on 12 Sep 1972 at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine, following a Mass of the Resurrection at St. Joseph Church.

• ii. Constance; born 19 Jul 1928 at Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine; died 16 Dec 1965 at Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine, at age 37; Brain cancer.

• 12. v. Paul J., born 13 Aug 1932 at Pine Point, Scarborough, Cumberland County, Maine; married Ann Malloy.

6. Catherine Ruth³ Clifford (John², Jeremiah¹) was born on 29 Jun 1899 at Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine. She married John Joseph Sughrue, son of Michael Joseph Sughrue and Elizabeth Frances Quinn, on 29 Jun 1925 at Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine; It was at this wedding that Bill Clifford (Cath's brother) met Alice Sughrue (John's sister) and fell in love. Alice returned home from this wedding and cancelled her engagement to another man; something that you just did not do in those days! Bill and Alice were married the following June. She died on 28 Mar 1992 at Forest Hills, Queens County, New York, at age 92.

Children of Catherine Ruth³ Clifford and John Joseph Sughrue were as follows:

• i. Joan⁴; born 8 May 1926; died 21 May 1933 at age 7.
• 15. ii. John J. Jr., born 8 May 1927; married Barbara Downer Reynolds; divorced Barbara Downer Reynolds.
• iii. Michael; born 14 Apr 1932; died 15 Dec 1970 at age 38.
• 16. iv. Katherine Jane is still living.
• 17. v. Suzanne is still living.

Generation Four

7. Thomas⁴ Reynolds (Louise³Clifford, John², Jeremiah¹) is still living.

9. John D.⁴ Clifford III (John³, John², Jeremiah¹) was born on 29 Jun 1920 at Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine. He married Athena Kesaris at Poland Springs, Androscoggin County, Maine. He died on 27 Feb 2000 at Pine Point, Scarborough, Cumberland County, Maine, at age 79.

12. Paul J.⁴ Clifford (William³, John², Jeremiah¹) was born on 13 Aug 1932 at Pine Point, Scarborough, Cumberland County, Maine. He married Ann Malloy, daughter of William Malloy and Margaret Downey, on 22 Jun 1957 at Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine. He died on 19 Aug 1998 at home, Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine, at age 66. He was buried on 22 Aug 1998 at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine, following a burial mass celebrated by his brother Fr. Richard Clifford S.J. at 11:00 A.M. in St. Joseph's Church.

Reynolds and Katherine Downer, on 17 Jan 1959 at St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York, New York County, New York; His Eminence Francis Cardinal Spellman performed The wedding. He and Barbara Downer Reynolds were divorced. He died on 10 Feb 1995 at New York, New York County, New York, at age 67.
