Congratulations, Jerry! You have made a very
well-designed Web site. Betty asked me to respond.
Betty or I or both have checked every link on the site map, and found
none that were dead. I did not check every link on every page and assume
that Betty did not. However, every link I checked was good.
I am not an artist, but I find the design pleasing to the eye. I
particularly like the simple, straight forward style. The colors are
harmonious and gentle. (The site map is a bit contrasty on our screen.)
We use Netscape Navigator 4.76.
We thank you, but know that thanks are small compared to the pleasure you
have had in searching and compiling the data, and in meeting the
challenge of HTML.

Dear Jerry,
Your information on the Baxters is wonderful. I have been working on the
Baxters for about 20 years, and have contacted family members and gotten
their information. This Mrs.Woods that you got info from, got her
information from me as far as I can remember. Some of the information
she got from me, did not get to you correctly. Anyway, I would be
willing to share what I have, and add to your database. My husband
decends from Chauncey Baxter, Nathan, Wilbur, Clifford, James,
Douglas,(my husband), and then Slater. So I will be able to expand on
Kenneth, Cliffords brother, as well as other decendants of Nathan and
Chauncey, as I see some are not expanded on. Can't remember if I ever
corresponded with you, but your name is familiar. Haven't looked at my
info for a while--Sincerely, Lola Baxter

JERRY,
I BELIEVE IT WAS MY MOTHER-in-law, CATHERINE COLLINS KOONS, WHO AFTER
HAVING ASKED HER PARENTS FOR INFORMATION ON THEIR IRISH ROOTS SEVERAL
TIMES, WAS TOLD, "THEY STOLE CATTLE FROM THE ENGLISH AT NIGHT AND
SOLD THEM BACK THE NEXT DAY." THIS MAKES FOR CONFUSION SINCE SLIGO
IS ON THE WEST COAST OF IRELAND AND THE ENGLISH CHANNEL IS ON THE EAST
COAST. TRANSPORTATION, BEING WHAT IT WAS IN THOSE DAYS I DOUBT THAT WAS
A POSSIBILITY. HOWEVER SLIGO IS PRETTY CLOSE TO THE COUNTY OF FERMANAGH
WHICH IS AN ENGLISH 'OWNED' COUNTY AND AS YOU POINTED OUT THEIR LANDLORDS
WERE OFTEN BRITISH. (LORD KNOX) I'M GOIN TO CONTINUE READING YOUR
INTERESTING WEB PAGE AND PROBABLY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO KEEP FROM
COMMENTING FURTHER.

I am a 4th grade teacher and teach a unit on
the native americans of NY state. I try to take the time to help my
students understand the concept of wampum since it had so many uses which
related to their culture and way of life. I've had to do some real
digging as our textbooks do not cover this adequately. It is also useful
to help them see the changes that came about as the Europeans settled in
America. I did not know about the Campbell factory before. Thank you for
making all of this information available.

In Simon's descendants, your # 352 - Ray Wheeler
Baxter, his wife Mae Laraway was my great-grandmother, but not through
the Baxter line; from her first marriage to Eddie Radeker. They had
three daughters. Funny how you comment that there were no family
witnesses, that the marriage seemed unapproved....Mae and Eddie split up
BEFORE he died, and when he fell ill, their daughters were sent to family
members in different parts of the state to be cared for, and eventually
raised by them after he died. She didn't even contact my grandmother
until she was in her 50's....Or it could have been that Mae was part
native american. From the stories my grandma would tell, Eddie's
family didn't like the marriage because of it. Maybe Ray
Baxter's family felt the same.....
Thanks for having this info - quite interesting, to say the least :)

Hi, I'm doing my MA thesis on wampum and
did wonder about the Campbell factory.I would like to learn more.
Wampum was never "Indian money" for Native Americans did not
know of money until the Europeans arrived, it was just part of a barter
system. You may fing copper in New England that was probably from
Michigan. Trading copper for the shell beads was common.

Just viewed your website on the descendents of
Simon Baxter.
I am a descendent of Charles Pinneo (Pineo) and Mary Baxter.
Our local history books (Will County, Illinois) put them here in 1833, a
year after their marriage. His citizenship papers --Declaration of Intent
to become a citizen, state that he immegrated from Nova Scotia, arriving
in Will County in June of 1844.
I can provide information on their descendents, and the Pinneo (Pineo)
line, which, ironically, includes an Aid-de-camp to General George
Washington.
I'd love to hear from you!

Greetings:
Great job on the Baxter website. It seems the earlier generations are
still a bit sketchy. And if Francis is the father of Simon of Hebron,
CT, he sure was young when he became a daddy.
I descend from #273 Josephine (Baxter) Paine, daughter of Lewis &
Polly (Woods) Baxter. [Josephine-6, Lewis-5, Hiram-4, John-3, William-2,
Simon Baxter of Hebron, CT]. Josephine's daughter Kate Mae Paine,
born in Jericho, VT 1867, married Lewis Michael Wool (born 24 Feb 1859,
Essex, VT, son of Michael, Jr. & Caroline (Page) Wool) and had five
children. Kate's eldest child, Alice Mabell Wool (born Essex, VT 17
June 1887) was my great-grandmother.
Are there any other descendants of Hiram Baxter-4 (born 1782, son of
William & Hannah (Petty) Baxter) and Prudence (Huestis) Baxter?? I
would like to communicate with any other descendants from this branch. I
have a 19th century photo of a man I believe to either be Lewis Baxter or
his son Stephen Baxter and hope to someday find another descendant who
may have additional 19th century photographs to compare with and possibly
help identify the one I have.
Do you have any further information on the descendants of Hiram &
Prudence (Huestis) Baxter that aren't listed on your website?? I
have some additional information from the History of Jericho, VT (volumes
1 and 2) that shows further generations of Daniel F. & Prudence
(Baxter) Fuller (#137). I'd be happy to forward this information to
you if you'd like it.

John C. Schumacher-Hardy

I am interested in finding out if we
are related. Our ancestors include names like John and Patrick Cahill
from Ireland as well.
Another point of interest is the fact we have a great-grandaughter who
raised funds through the National Transplant Fund for a liver transplant
which she received about 5 years ago. She was nearly 2 years old when she
received her transplant and is now 7 and doing so well.
We still receive the New Start News letter and I noticed you on the front
page. Interestingly enough, my brother James Cahill has a son Jerry
Cahill who lives in Vacaville, CA. My brother passed away a little over a
year ago from a massive heart attack.
We were born and raised in the state Of Maine. It would be nice to make

God's blessings on your endeavors and we'll be praying for you.

Hi,
I am currently doing research on Levi C. Baxter, an early settler to
Libetyville, Illinois in 1835. I see you have more information on the
Baxter family than anyone else. I am looking for varification on who was
Levi's father. Levi was born in 1817 in Washington County, New York.
He had a brother named Warren F. Baxter also born in New York and two
known older sisters: Marcia Jones (wife of Willard Jones) and Amy Mary
(wife of Dewitt Lane) both born in Westford, Chittenden County, Vermont.
I tend to believe his father was Levi D. Baxter som on Moses Baxter and
Comfort Chafee who lived in Fort Ann, Washington County, New York.
However, I cannot provide actual proof. Any information you may have
would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi,
I'm J.P. Baxter's Great Great Great nephew. I found your site
while researching one of my relatives, Lydia MacDonald, formerly Mrs.
Claude S. Gillette. While most people obsess over James Phinney Baxter
and Percival Baxter (Former Maine Gov), my interest is in some more of
the colorful members of the family, "Cousin Lydia" being one of
the most colorful. She was Percival's sister...Lydia Baxter. She
was married several times, very ahead of her time and quite a character.
One husband was an admiral, another she referred to as "the
monk" who she married because he played the piano well, but she
quickly discovered on her wedding night, "that was about all he
could do well". I ran into her daughter who is 81 a couple weeks
ago at the Blaine House, Augusta, ME where the Governor was honoring
former Governors of the State of Maine...Percy being one of them. I have
some rather interesting materials on that side of the family if you are
ever interested. The eldest direct JP Baxter descendants remaining are
John L. Baxter Jr, 88 of Sisters, OR (my uncle) and Lydia's daughter.
I need to do a better job of documenting the non-Phinney/Percival history
before they pass on.
Best regards,
Scott Baxter

How thrilled I was to find this tree. My great-
grandmother was a Baxter in Howick (orignally Georgetown) inQuebec. We
have been trying to find out what happened to Nathan--- now we know. We
thought that he had a son named Zebulon (maybe a first family) that is
not on the tree. This is referred to in a local history that would put
him in the Georgetown area in 1812. It says that he is an old soldier of
Washington's army and Zebulon can't be spared on the farm to join
the 1812-14 army. We'll keep working on it.

Absolutely great website! I am a daughter of
Kester Williams II. My grandfather Kester James Williams married Anna
Margaret Niven and was the son of Worth Williams and Martha Lodusky
Fuller. And you know that Worth Williams was the son of Titus W. Williams
and Samantha Baxter. We have inherited Tuberous Sclerosis. This has
caused many deaths, from brain tumors especially, in our family. I do
know it comes from my paternal side of the family. I was sure it was from
the Niven line. (Joyce Hoffman is my grandmothers niece.) But seeing the
vast inbreeding that went on in This line and the number of young deaths
I am sure that couldn't have helped any. My grandmothers brother and
sister and daughter died of brain tumors. My son died of a brain tumor.
Myself and many of my children and grandchildren have brain tumors. On
nephew is on the kidney transplant list 24 yrs old and one 24 year old
nephew has brain cancer. I am trying to solve the mystery for the family
before I die. I have kidney cancer and a very dangerous periaortal
paraganglioma pheochromocytoma. All inherited. Again this is a
fascinating piece of work. I would really like to know more about you. I
have been working on this about fourteen years and I know how difficult
it is to create such a masterpiece. Keep it growing. Dorothy Rose

Hi Mr. Cahill -
Thank you for your previous help. I was able to get more accurate
information about my family and hope you can help me get more info, or
tell me where I can look further.
My mother is Margaret Baxter Fine. Her Father is William Henry Baxter
and her Mother was Grace Anjanette Ward.
William Henry's Father was Dr. William Elihu Baxter who started the
Ear, Nose, and Throat clinic at Massachussets General Hospital in Boston.
His Mother was Helene Adams Baxter (of the famous John and John Quincy
Adams family).
He had a brother named Clarence Pennell Baxter whose name is derived from
the family that Pennellville, Mass? is named for.
Grace Anjanette Ward is the daughter of Porter Bronson Ward (who started
the Coldwell and Ward Foundry) and Margaret Wynn Ward. Grace and her
mother are both from Toronto, Canada.
I would love to know more and to clean up the family tree. Since I
started doing this, my mother has found out that Percival Proctor Baxter
(1876 - 1969) was a cousin, not an uncle as she had previously thought,
as is James Phinney Baxter III (He was the former president of Williams
College).
Anyway - I am trying to find the actual connection between the Adams
family and my own, as well as information about other family members.
Thank you in advance for your help.

have any information about that branch of the family? Nellie married
William E Cronin and moved to Manchester NH. My cousins recently found an
old album full of pictures--none labeled that they shared with me. When
my younger cousin asked why nana never labeled the pictures, I responded
she didn't have to, she knew who they were. There were several
pictures of priests and a couple of people in military uniform--WW1
vintage.
Her brother Timothy Clifford Sullivan was raised by "rich

Dear Sir,
A message from the Emerald Isle.
While I was seeking data on my great great grandfather John Sugrue of
Maulnahone, Waterville 1796-1873-which I put into the web-and your
wonderful site came up I find nowthat it is your Clifford relations that
are so important. You well know that all the Sugrue Clann came from
Kerry,Ireland. The Jeremiah Clifford is most interesting and I
"feel" at this stage is a relation of mine-My paternal
grandmother was a wonderful Lady and A Mary Clifford from Shanaknock,
Cahirdaniel,Co Kerry.( Kilcrohane Parish ).Given the names of the family
of your Jeremiah( I was christened Jeremiah ) I feel we may have the same
Cliffords. Now 3 of Mary's brothers went to Butte, Silver Bow,
Montana. The key is that some of the previous generation also went to
Butte and your Jerm. could be oneof these.
It is up to me to help you in this area. I live in Dublin and am retired
for the last 16 years-best years in my life. I started taking notes some
years ago and am neworas to the web. I still have to go through your site
and at this stage i did not take note of the site name as I responded too
quickly when I saw that Clifford family. So I hope I do not lose the
contact. Thanking you for all the work you have done.
Most sincerely,
Diarmuid Sugrue. ( Diarmuid is the Irish for Jeremiah )

You have; Chauncey4 Baxter (Uriah3, Nathan2, Simon1) was born in 1794 at
Vermont. He married Nancy Vroman on 5 Mar 1804;
If I understand correctly this is indicating Chauncey and Nancy married
in 1804; but actually that is about the year she was born. In 1860 she is
listed as 57 and in 1870 as 66 both of which jibe with Lora Vroman
Randall's date of 15 Mar 1804 in Middleburg, Schoharie Co. I
can't guarantee she has hard proof to back her data up, but her book
seems pretty well researched and I haven't found much wrong with it

Hello! I'm Patty Rupp looking for
information on my Maternal Grandmother Nellie Quinn. Sister Anna possible
brother Stephen. All born in late 1800's in Lewiston, Maine. Nellie
married William Groom, lived in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, N.Y. When and
how she went to N.Y. don't know. My G. Nellie died at 35 in Brooklyn.
Had 3 girls Katherine, Helen and Marie. Girls were close in age. Were all
put into orphanage in Brooklyn when my Mother was 5. Helen was born
8/13/1911. Katherine and Marie no dates. I've just started on the
computer so I hardly know what I doing and can use all the help I can
get. Mother and sisters all deceased. Anna lived in Manhattan married
Harry Lottridge, 3 children all died. Know nothing about Stephen if he
existed. That is all my Mother could tell me. If this Nellie Quinn is
mine and there is any connection please let me know. Thank you.

from Ireland as a member of my family. I am reasonably sure they are not
one and the same, but it would be interesting to find out if there is a
connection. If you can give me any information I would appreciate it. I
too will send you anything I find.

Still looking for your John Sugrue and where
my own John Sugrue 1796-1873 came from . All Sugrue's have their
roots in Kerry. In Griffith Valuation (1853) only 8 Sugrues were outside
Kerry and 7 in Cork. These 7 Sugrues were related to Carl Sugrue of
Fermoyle (PRIOR PARISH).I am also keeping an eye out for Jeremiah

Keep up the great work,

I am a descendant of William, son of William and
Johanna. I can provide you with more on that branch if you are
interested. Willaim (Jr.) was living in western MA (Pittsfield), but
married a woman (Abigail Dewey) from Colchester CT-marriage took place in
East Haddam CT. Colchester is in the same general area as Hebron and
East Haddam was possibly the nearest church to Colchester. This detail
makes one wonder how they met. It may give credence to the connection to
Simon. who was from Hebron.

Re: Richard Baxter and Mary Hunkes, Mary was a daughter
of Katherine Hunckes nee Conway, Katherine was sister of Sir Edward
Conway.
Katherine married Sir Thomas Hunkes (Knight Dublin Castle) they had five
sons and three daughters. Sir Fulke (Governor of the Isle of Man, and
friend of Charles I soldier in Ireland) Sir Henry (Governor of Barbados
1638-41 also a colonel of foot)who was knighted by Charles I in Oxford
1642/3. Francis (Soldier in Holland and Ireland) Sir Thomas (Junior)
Knighted Charles I) also a soldier in Holland, Ireland and Cadiz 1625.
and Hercules born Stratford on Avon who was a puritan colonel in
Cromwell's army. The sisters were Dorothy who married Rev
Archbold,Mary who married Rev Richard Baxter's father and Elizabeth
who married and settled in Ireland. Hercules steadfastly refused to
acknowledge orders to execute King Charles I and had a heated argument
with Cromwell He like his colleague Col Phayre who also refused to sign
acknowledgement of the order to execute the King returned to Ireland.
Huncks sold his estate in Monkstown County Cork and later settled in Birr
also known as Parsonstown in County Offaly then Kings County also in
Ireland. A later Mary Hunks daughter of Elizabeth Hunckes married John
Greer of Rhone Hill Dungannon and it is from this union the Quaker Greers
stem. Thomas Greer second son of John and Mary Hunks Greer was a
successful linen merchant, Joseph and Jeremiah Hankes (Hunkes) were
merchants trading out of Ireland with Thomas Sharp into colonial America.
The Quaker influence came from Brilliana Conway wife of Lord Harley,
Harley's brothers married two Foley sisters from Kiddiminster.
Brilliana who was named after the Dutch town of Brill was a daughter of
Sir Edward Conway and first cousin of the above mentioned Hunkes brothers
and sisters. Sir Edward Conway's wife was Dorothy Tracy. Lady Anne
Conway nee Finch died a Quaker her brother was solicitor general and it
was he who ensured all confiscated land forfeited by Hercules Hunks was
returned including his back pay by special order of the executed Kings
son Charles II so there. Hope that is of some interest.

Thanks for all your notes. Excellent.
I should have someone collate my notes and data from my research of the
1980s in the library at SLC.
Yes, Simon's father was shot by a neighbor named Johnson, and my
records say that the rifle was borrowed by Johnson from Francis.
Can you suggest a researcher to help me with writing up my Baxter line?
I am from James Baxter b Vt and who left VT by wagon with another
bachelor farmer, Oliver Mills, about 1856. They stopped in Cass Co. Iowa,
and James eventually owned 2,000 acres of farm land. I have a small
remnant of 134 acres managed by National Farm Co. of Omaha.

Baxter from Quincy (Braintree) Mass.
My question has to do with the JP Baxter unpublished manuscripts:
"The Baxters of New England" by J. P. Baxter, Unpublished
manuscript, 1921.
"A Collection of Genealogies" by J. P. Baxter, Undated
manuscript.
Do these have info on the Massacusetts branch and if so - any idea where
I can get a copy.

Thanks,
Interesting to find out some more about my family tree. My great
grandmother was generation 6, then we faded off the tree as she got
married and her children weren't Baxters any more. Her lineage was
Simon, Nathan, Nathan Jr. Aaron, Tracy. Her name was Celia Baxter. We
also found out she had a child none of her grandchildren seem to remember
hearing about (maybe died young).
Very well done.

Excellent compilation Jerry, and a great help to all us
descendents.
Want to alert you to what I'm fair certain is an error in the William
Campbell geneology, excerpted below.
I believe Abraham James Madison Campbell had 6 children with Amira
Woodruff, including Albert Bogert Campbell, an officer on the USS
Monitor, and Abraham Clifton Campbell, my ancestor. Both Abrahams are
buried in Marshfield, Oregon.
My great-aunt's notes compiled for membership in the DAR (based on
the service of David Campbell son of William) refer to Anna Louise
Bentley as Anne D. L'Hommedieu -- a second marriage for both. Story
told is that Anne was such a cruel stepmother to the children of Abraham
James Madison that he left NY for San Francisco and Marshfield, Oregon
rather than contend with her and left behind a grand house in Cold Spring
Harbor.
50. Abraham James Madison4 Campbell (Jacob3, David2, William1) was born
on 29 Jun 1815 at New York, New York County, New York. He was baptized on
17 Aug 1815 at New York, New York County, New York. He married Almira
Woodruff. He married Anna Louise Bentley. He died on 2 Feb 1899 at age
83. He was buried at Bergenfield, Bergen County, New Jersey.
There were no children of Abraham James Madison4 Campbell and Almira
Woodruff.
Children of Abraham James Madison4 Campbell and Anna Louise Bentley were:
i. Albert Park5; born 1862 at Cold Springs Harbor, Suffolk County, New
York; married Lizzie Pomeroy McBurney 1889 at Riverside, Riverside
County, California.
