Laura Pelphrey, Staffordsville, Passes May 19 Mrs. Laura Pelphrey, 87, well-
known resident of Staffordsville, died Tuesday afternoon, May 19, at her
home following an illness of one year.
The daughter of the late Henry and Sarah Kimler Sturgill, she was born in
this county March 1, 1872, and had been a lifelong resident of the
Staffordsville community.
Her first marriage was to Alex Blanton who preceded her in death.
Her second marriage was to Amos Pelphrey, who died September 1956.
Survivors include five sons, George and Leck Blanton, both of Portsmouth,
Ohio; Fred, Brooks and Vol Pelphrey, all of Staffordsville; two daughters,
Donnie Tackett, Staffordsville, and Grace Dunlap, Detroit, Michigan.
She is also survived by two sisters, Beechie Howard, Bolts Fork, and Winnie
Frazier, Ashland.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 10:00 a.m., from the United
Baptist Church at Staffordsville with Lonza Reed, Lloyd Williams, Tommie
Bailey and John Pelphrey as officiating ministers.
Burial was in the family cemetery at Staffordsville. Mrs. Laura B. Pelphrey
was born March 1, 1872, in Johnson county.
The fifth child of Mary Ann Kimbler and Henry Sturgill. On October 19,
1889, she was united in marriage to James E. H. Blanton, to this marriage
was born a daughter and two sons. Following the death of her husband on
October 1, 1895, she was married to Amos Pelphrey on December 1, 1899.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Amos, on September 21, 1958, her
father and mother and six brothers and sisters.
Surviving are two sisters, Winnie Frazier, Ashland; and Beechie Howard,
Bolls Fork, Ky. She is also survived by the following children: Chloe
Mahan, Staffordsville; Georgia Blanton, Portsmouth, Ohio; Leck Blanton, New
Boston, Ohio; Fred, Brooks, Bert and Vol Pelphrey and Donna Tackett all of
Staffordsville and Grace Dunlap of Detroit, Michigan, 48 grandchildre, 92
great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. One grandchild, Ben
Dorman Tackett, is serving in the armed forces in Korea. Laura B. Pelphrey
resided in Johnson county her entire lifetime. She lived a long and useful
life doing worthy deeds among her many friends and neighbors. She was proud
to have done her part as a pioneer, both in rearing a fine family, and by
taking part in civic and political affairs. In her younger days she rode her
horse many miles throughout the county to assist in posting and distributing
handvills to advance a worthy cause or political figure. Later in life she
was employed in numerous home and business establishments in Paintsville.
She was a faithful wife and devoted mother and was known as a hard working
and thoroughly honest woman. She was affectionately known to hundreds of
people during her life as “Aunt Laura.” She resided for the past twelve
years at the home where she passed away, four miles west of Paintsville on
Highway 150, near the Mouth of Mud Lick. She left his home on earth Tuesday,
May 19 at 6:10 p.m., at the age of 87 years, two months and eighteen days.
She had been in gradual failing health since a recent fall from the porch at
her home and had been confined at The Paintsville Hospital for twelve days,
she had only been back at her home one day before she succumbed. Laura
passed away in the knowledge and faith that she was entering a better world
and that a better home awaited her. She will be sadly missed by her beloved
children and other surviving friends and relatives. She was laid to rest in
the family cemetery just opposite her last home on earth.
