WILLIAM MCKINLEY SPARKS
1896-1962
William McKinley Sparks, 65, former resident of this city residing in
Prestonsburg, died unexpectedly in the Prestonsburg hospital at 7:30 a.m.
Thursday, March 22 of a heart attack.
Mr. Sparks, the son of Mrs. Missouri Phillips Sparks of this city and the
late John Sparks was born October 27, 1896, at Flat Gap. In his youth he
attended school at Upper Frank’s Creek. A pioneer in bus transportation,
until recent years he was associated with the bus lines he helped to
establish in the Big Sandy and Beaver Creek regions of Eastern Kentucky.
Surviving besides his mother are his wife, Mrs. Jettie Wells Sparks, whom he
married February 26, 1932; three sons, Willis Sparks, Prestonsburg,
McKinley, Jr. of Orland, FL; Oakley Gene of Prestonsburg; five daughters,
Pauline McGurie, Peggy Jo Branham, Harriett Sue Sparks and Dinah Lynn
Sparks, all of Prestonsburg, and Mary Elizabeth Hunt of Hazard; four
sisters, Mrs. Alma Neeley, Hampton, VA, Mrs. Mona Roth, city, Myrtle S.
Buchanan, Newport News, VA; Mrs. Maxie Stodhill, Yorktown, VA; four
brothers, Olma Sparks, Union, OH, Oakley, J. O. and Chester Sparks, all of
this city.
Also surviving are eight grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at
11 a.m. Sunday at the United Baptist church in this city with F. F. Rigsby,
I. I. Williams and Tommy Bailey as officiating ministers.
Burial was in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.
