ORAN TEATER
Oran Teater, 80, dies at Morehead residence Oran Teater, 80, who was
instrumental in the formation of the Kentucky Educational Development
Corporation based in Ashland, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001 at his home
in Morehead.
Teater was a superintendent of Paintsville Independent Schools for 20
years, retiring in 1978. In his 10 terms with KEDC, he served as its
first board chairman from 1965 to 1971. He also was chairman in 1976
and 1977. Teater "provided steady leadership when the organization
faced the end of its Federal Title III funding source," KEDC
executive director Stan Riggs said. "Oran Teater's dedication and
vision were critical during those years to both KEDC and the children
of Paintsville. The full scope and impact of his contribution to
education will not be realized for many years to come. Our prayers go
out to his family," Riggs said. Teater, a former basketball coach,
started the Paintsville Invitational Tournament and the elementary
school in Paintsville is named in his honor. He is a past president
of the Eastern Kentucky Education Association and Kentucky
Association of School Administrators. He also helped organize the
Kentucky Teacher Retirement System. Other community activities
included serving on the Big Sandy Area Council board of directors,
the ROPES board, the Kentucky Surplus Property board of directors and
the Vocational Technical Advisory Board. A former president of
Kiwanis, he was a member of Paintsville Masonic Lodge 381 and El Hasa
Shrine Temple in Ashland.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Evelyn VanHoose Teater; a daughter,
Dianna Teater Walke of Morehead; two sisters, Loretta Hadley of
Harrodsburg and Antionette Bruce of Richmond, Va.; a granddaughter;
and three great- grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Morehead First
Christian Church by Dr. John Dunstan and Dr. J.D. Reeder.
Burial will be in the Highlands Memorial Park in Staffordsville.
Friends may call after 5 p.m. Friday at the Northcutt and Sons Home
for Funerals in Morehead. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be
made to the Paintsville First Christian Church or the Morehead First
Christian Church.
