Charles Britton Wells, 52, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 21, in Georgetown.
 
He was born Nov. 11, 1959, in Paintsville, to Carlos Horn Wells, and the
late Charles C. Wells.
 
He was the grandson of the late Charles J. Wells of Paintsville, and the
late Carl and Eleanor Horn of Prestonsburg. Charles was a 1978 graduate of
Johnson Central High School, and a 1983 graduate of Georgetown College.
 
Survivors include his beloved wife and best friend, Sheila; his devoted and
much loved mother, Carlos Wells; three dearly loved dogs and a cat; an aunt,
Elizabeth Fannin; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Neil and Bonnie Price;
two sisters-in- law, Bonnie (Robert) Houf, and Kim (Rob) Miller; a niece,
five nephews, and a great-niece.
 
In 2008, Gov. Beashear appointed Charles as special assistant in the
Kentucky Personnel Cabinet, where he was a liaison between the state and the
labor groups representing its employees. Charles held that post until his
death. Previously, Charles worked for 19 years in Frankfort as the director
of the Kentucky Association of State Employees and the American Federation
of Teachers. Charles was a life-long advocated for working families. He
worked tirelessly to help others and gave a voice to those who could not
speak for themselves.
 
Charles served as Finance Committee Chairman for the Kentucky Democratic
Party’s Central Executive Committee. He also served as Chairman of the Scott
County Ethics Commission. And in early 2003, he was the Democratic Nominee
in a special election for the Kentucky Senate’s 17th District. He was active
in the local, state, and national Democratic Party. Charles will be greatly
missed by his family and many friends. The world has lost a true gentleman.
  
A memorial service in celebration of his life was held 4 p.m. Saturday,
March 3, at John L. Hill Chapel, Georgetown College, in Georgetown.
Graveside services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 4, at Highland
Memorial Park Cemetery, Staffordsville, under the direction of Jones-Preston
Funeral Home, Paintsville.
 
Memorial contributions are requested to Charles B. Wells Scholarship fund at
Georgetown College Office of Development at 400 E. College St., Georgetown,
KY 40324, or to Lexington Humane Society at 1600 Old Frankfort Pike,
Lexington, KY 40504.
