GRANT WHEATLEY
1891-1964
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday for Grant
Wheatley, 73, prominent Paintsville resident; who died in a local
hospital at 1:30 a.m., Sunday, June 14, after an extended illness.
A native of Johnson County and a lifelong resident, he was born
February 19, 1891, a son of the late John Burns and Miranda Brown
Wheatley.
The family was widely known throughout the area where John B.
Wheatley was recognized as a renonwned leader in the education
field. Mr. Wheatley was a member of the First Methodist Church and
a well-known businessman of the city. He served as manager of the
Paintsville Water and Light Company; and before his retirement was
employed as a salesman by the Shapleigh Hardware Co., of St Louis,
Mo. Prior to his illness he was operating a merchandising
establishment in this city. His genial personality was reflected
by a characteristic friendliness, which won him many friends, and
he was held in the highest esteem by his acquaintances and
business associates.
Survivors include his wife Mrs. Lorana Fairchild Wheatley; a son,
John Grant Wheatley of this city; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth
Frank, Gurnee, Ill.; a brother, Virgil Wheatley of this city; a
sister, Mrs. Mary Layne, Anaheim, California.
Services were conducted at the FIrst Methodist Church with the
pastor, the Rev. Jeff H. Burton, and former pastor, the Rev.
Robert Hart, officiating.
Active pall bearers were Tollie Meade, O. T. Dorton, C. C.
Williams, L. A. Jennings, Paul Stafford, J. E. Radcliffe and W. A.
Johnson. Honorary pallbearers were Robert Montgomery, Russell
Hager, Fred Adams, Leonard Short, Charles M. Wells, J. G. Newman,
C. O. Wheeler, Jr., V. S. Williams, G. H. Rice, David Jones, Abe
Barber, C. H. Vincent, Oscar Williams, Jr., and D. H. Dorton, Sr.
Burial was in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.
