JAY WHITTEN
1915-2000
Retired miner Jay Preston Whitten, 85, of Paintsville, died Tuesday,
April 25, 2000 at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Whitten was born February 8, 1915, in Floyd County, to the late
Bob and Amanda Ward Whitten.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Mabel Layne Whitten; two sons, Jay
P. Whitten Jr. of Lake Lure, North Carolina, and John Charles Whitten
of Atlanta, Georgia; five daughters, Margie Opal Koger of Roanoke,
Virginia, Janice L. Birt of Bessemer City, North Carolina, Carolyn
Sue Miller of Charleston, South Carolina, Joyce Whitten Seal of
Crozet, Virginia, and Deborah Irene Marcum of Danielsville, Georgia;
and 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, April 27, at Jones-Preston
Funeral Home Chapel, with Walter E. Koger and Larry P. Birt Sr.
officiating.
Burial was in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.
