James Curtis was a 2000 graduate of Paintsville High School. He was a proud
member of the Tiger Football team for four years.

James Curtis decided to join the Army in 2005. He served three tours in Iraq
and was a well decorated veteran. Anyone who knew James, knew how proud he
was of the honors he received while in the military. He received many
honors, awards and medals during his service to our country.

His family looked forward to the phone calls, and e-mails when James would
just want to hear their voice or tell a joke. Many of his family would spend
hours on the phone with his mother while watching FOX news with her in
making sure her baby boy was okay. The night that James Curtis was spotted
in a news clip on Nightline, the news spread fast, all of us so proud to
just catch a glimpse of James doing what he was most proud of, fighting for
his country. Jim's face would light up when his phone would ring and it was
James, he encouraged James to always stay safe and know he loved him.

James Curtis loved the outdoors, he enjoyed camping, four-wheeling, fishing,
and hunting.

There are many stories his family and friends could tell from his childhood
to his death. Living with three older sisters, James Curtis loved to play
pranks on Jaime, Jenny and Julie. Through laughter and tears, they all
endured through the face of adversity and the sickness and loss of their
mother. They shared a bond like no other, and James Curtis loved all of his
family through the good times and bad. Never leaving a conversation, in
person, or on the telephone without telling you he loved you.

James Curtis would want you to remember him for the laughter he shared, not
for the tears his death has brought to all who knew him.

James Curtis Witten IV was laid to rest on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, at the
Highland Memorial Park Cemetery, Staffordsville, with full military honors.
