After his discharge, his hearing improved and his eyesight got worse, until in 1875 he was totally blind. Before he enrolled in the military he had been a shoemaker. After his discharge he worked as a laborer. He had been working for William Dilworth, Jr. at his planing mill and lumberyard in the city of Pittsburgh as a laborer.
