SQUIRE JAMES BOWLBY
Dies at His Home in Carey Monday Morning, at 6 o'Clock.
Squire James BOWLBY died at his home, in Carey, Monday morning, at 6 o'clock, from a complication of diseases.
Mr. BOWLBY was born December 8, 1831, in Wayne county, and was in his eighty-second year at the time of death. Deceased came to Wynadot county in 1853 and lived on a farm, two and one-half miles west of Carey, until 1883, since which time he had lived in Carey. He was married January 1, 1857, to Amanda GRINDLE, who departed this life February 22, 1901. Five sons and five daughters were born to this union, of whom the following survive: Mrs. Emma O'BRIEN, of Detroit, Mich.; R. D. BOWLBY, of Findlay; J. W. BOWLBY, of Fletcher, Ontario; O. C. BOWLBY, of Carey, and N. H. BOWLBY, of Cleveland. One sister, Mrs. Charles KURTZ, of Neenah, Wis., survives at the age of seventy-six years. Squire BOWLBY was a prominent resident of Carey. He served two terms as mayor of that city and had been justice of the peace for about thirty years, serving in that capacity at the time of his death.
The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, from the Carey Methodist Episcopal church, conducted by Rev. W. J. Hagerman. Burial will be made in the Keller cemetery, on the Ridge.

Be advised that I have checked the death records, but find nothing for the above mentioned parties. The early death records were kept by the tax assessors; therefore they are incomplete. (Death records do not begin until 1867.)
However, I did find entries in the book entitled "Cemeteries of Crawford County, Ohio, Volume 2" in which I find the following:
Jas BOWLBY was born September 11, 1796 and died November 23, 1870. Parents names are unknown and his spouse was Sarah GROSS. Burial number is 1934 and location is sec PC and lot is 15. Burial was in Fairview Cemetary which is just north of Galion Ohio.
Sarah BOWLBY was born April 1, 1801 and died March 12, 1859. Father's name was "___ GROSS". mother unknown and spouses name was BOWLBY, Jas. Again, burial was in Fairview Cemetary and location of grave is sec PC and lot is 15.

Died, this morning at about 7 o'clock, at the depot of this place, Mr.
James Bowlby, in the (25th) year of his age.
The deceased had for a long time, been a resident of Galion, Ohio, but
occasionally visits his son, Mr. Emanuel Bowlby, and Mrs. Michael Lambright,
(his daughter,) both living near this place. Having spent a few days there,
concluded this morning to start for Galion, left Mrs. Lambright, (about
one mile from town) walked rapidly to the depot. When he arrived there,
complained of feeling a little chilly, sat down by the stove and entered into
conversation with Mr. Daily and others. In a few minutes his head bent
forward, and he gave utterance to a low, moaning noise, which attracted
the attention of Mr. Flaharty the Agent, and others. They immediately took
hold upon him, raised his head, carried him to the door, threw water in his
face, &c. Dr. Jones was immediately summoned, but before he arrived, Mr.
Bowlby was dead. The bystanders say that from the time his head dropped,
until they regarded life extinct, was not more than 4 or 5 minutes. His body
was taken out to his daughter's, placed in a coffin, an on tomorrow
morning his relations propose taking his remains on the early train to Galion for burial.

James BOWLBY and wife, Sarah, were in Somerset Co. 15 MAR 1828, when they disposed of two parts of his grandfather's estate, one part having been released to him previously by his brother, Henry BOWLBY. James and Sarah moved from PA. to OH. in 1831. They raised most of their family in Stark Co., then in 1852 moved to Crawford Co., and lived somewhere near Galion and Bucyrus, both are given as their address. They are said to have had 14 children, 13 of whom they raised to maturity, one died as an infant. Nine of the 13 children were living in 1884. Mrs. Cordelia KELLY writes: "We do not know James' wife's maiden name but they called her Aunt Sarah. Her weight was 300 and James had a carriage made for her and a ladder to get in and out of the carriage. My father and his brother, Samuel CARBAUGH, visited them in 1849." Later Mrs. KELLY gives Sarah's last name as "GROOSE". Her companion in family research, Mrs. GRIZZELLE, gives Sarah's last name as "CROSS".
