The 1840 and 1850 census list John's family living in Upper Turkeyfoot Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. The 1850 census appears to have three errors: John is listed as 60 years old rather than 48 years old; his wife is not listed; and his daughter, Rebecca, and her daughter are listed as Bowlbys. However, names in the household determine that it was John's family. Historians give names of his nine children out of order, but the order is determined in comparing census reports: Wesley, Delilah, Dortha, Rebecca, Josiah, John, Elizabeth, Mary Margaret, and Samuel.

A biographical sketch of Salamis BOWLBY whose parents were John and Susan (STAHL) BOWLBY appears in a history of Hancock Co., OH. Subtracting 20 years from Salamis' age gives 1824 as the approximate birth of his father. This and many other circumstances are too strong not to believe that Salamis' father was the John considered here, and that his mother was a sister to Sarah STALL who married Emanuel, older brother of the John. Emanuel's sketch in the Wyandot Co. history of 1884, gives information of Sarah STALL's family:
"Michael and Sarah (BOWERS) STALL, natives of Somerset Co., PA., the former born 1792, the latter in 1795. They had 11 children, six living -- Abraham, Henry, William, Elizabeth, Sarah, Barbara. The deceased are George, Michael, Jackson, John and Susan."

Apparently, Emanuel married Sarah, older sister of Susan, and their maiden name was STALL or STAHL.

John, a shoemaker, settled in Finlay, Hancock Co., OH., in 1847, and remained until 1856 and then moved to Carey, Wyandot Co., OH. Seven childre were born to them, all of whom were living in 1903. Salamis is the only known name, but he had a sister, Mrs. RHIENHART, living in Hancock Co., OH. in 1903.
