The 1820 census of Turkeyfoot Twp. has Samuel "BOWLSBY" living there with his wife and eight children. Samuel's family left PA. after the birth of his youngest child, Sarah (b. 1832), and moved to Ohio for some time before moving on to Murphysboro, Jackson Co., IL. where Samuel bought 8,000 acres of land 3 May 1841. From the Illinois census it can be determined that Samuel and Abigail spent at least fourteen years of their married life in Ohio before moving on to Illinois, and that they came to Illinois less than three years before 1860. The 1860 census for Jackson Co., IL., Twp. 8, Range 2 West gives: Samuel BOWLBY, 48, m., N. J.; Abigal, 48, f., N. J.; Samuel, 17, m., OH; Elisha, 13, m., OH; Thomas 3, m., OH. Mrs. Kelly says that Samuel and Abigail owned a farm near Harrison's mines near Murphysboro, IL, that they were buried in Halladay Cem. there. She also gives the names of their twelve children. Evidently the older children had left home before the 1860 census.

Samuel was the first of six children of Samuel BOWLBY (9) presumed to be by an unknown first wife before he married Johanna PARKHURST. All of these children would have been born and reared in the Sussex - Warren County area near the turn of the century. A Samuel BOWLBY has been found who specifically fulfills these qualifications with the added interest that both he and his proposed brother, Joseph I. BOWLSBY, migrated to Licking County, Ohio. There are four warren County, New Jersey, land deeds dating from 1835 to 1843 whose grantor was Jemima BOWLBY, wife of Samuel BOWLBY. The graves of Samuel and his wife Jemima are located in Maple Grove Cemetery, Alexandria, Licking County, Ohio: "Samuel BOWLBY b. 8 MAY 1798, d. 2 MAY 1878" and "Jemima BOWLBY b. 18 MAR 1801, d. 9 APR 1874". The 1850 census record of Newton Township, Licking County, Ohio, enumerated Samuel's household with wife, Jemima, and five children: Margaret, Jane, Rebecca, Daniel, and Samuel. (Three Years)
Sixty-fifth Infantry. - Col., Charles G. Harker; Lieut.- Cols., Daniel French, Alexander Cassil, Horatio N. Whitbeck, Orlow Smith; Majs., James Olds, Samuel C. Brown. This regiment was organized in the state at large, from Oct. 3 to Dec. 14, 1861, to serve for three years. On the expiration of its term of service the original members (except veterans) were mustered out and the organization, composed of veterans and recruits,
was retained in service until Nov. 30, 1865, when it was mustered out in accordance with orders from the war department. The following is a list of battles, in which this regiment bore an honorable part, as given in the Official Army Register:
Shiloh, siege of Corinth, Stone's river, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Missionary ridge, Rocky Face ridge, Resaca, Adairsville, New Hope Church, Kennesaw mountain, Big Shanty, Peachtree creek, siege of Atlanta, Jonesboro, Spring Hill, Franklin and Nashville.
It was not very actively engaged at Shiloh, and lost but 2 men wounded, but during the siege of Corinth it was under fire almost hourly. In the engagement at Stone's river it lost 2 officers killed and 8 wounded (one mortally), 38 men killed, 106 wounded, 19 missing and 3 deserted in the face of the enemy. The regiment was under fire throughout the entire engagement. In the engagement at Chickamauga it lost 3 officers killed and 5 wounded, 13 men killed, 60 wounded and 24 missing; in the battle of Missionary ridge it had 1 killed and 14 wounded; at Resaca it lost 2 killed and 26 wounded, in a skirmish near Kennesaw mountain, 2 men wounded; in a charge on Kennesaw it lost 3 killed and 7 wounded; at Peachtree creek it lost 4 men wounded and 1 missing; at Atlanta, July 22, 1 killed and 1 wounded; in the battle of Spring Hill it lost 5 killed, 22 wounded and 14 missing; and at Franklin, 1 killed, 22 wounded and 21 missing.
