Johann Georg Borger, age about 26, brought his family from Galka, Russia, [aka Ust-Kulalinka] where he was born, aboard the SS Willihad, landing in Portland, Maine on March 17, 1913 - apparently they then went on to Canada. Most recently they had lived at 604 Boyd Ave. in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Two years and 3 months after reaching the Americas, on June 21, 1915, the family was on the move again, this time from Canada to the US. Little Berta was now 3. As she was born in Galka and came with the family on the ship she was maybe under one year for the transatlantic crossing. A long voyage for the mother, also born in Galka, Anna Elizabeth, making the crossing at 27 years with an infant girl. They may have waited in Galka for the birth, where there would be assistance from their families if needed. This young family of 3 will join a friend, Henry Reich, in Waverly, Iowa. This suggests they had known Henry earlier, probably in Galka, and have been corresponding. [I wish we had those letters.] They have listed their nearest relative in Russia as Anna Elizabeth's Grandfather, Johannes Geo. Halver of Galka [now being written as Ust-Kulalinka and mangled almost beyond recognition. There is no mention of parents for Anna Elizabeth nor for Johann Georg - makes one wonder what happened. The use of the name Halver is probably an error, also, as there were families named Helver in Galka at that time [often written as Helwer in Germany and Helmer in the US]. This could be the maiden name for Anna Elizabeth but, as it is her Grandfather not her Father, we can't be sure. The father Johannes is 5 feet 7 inches tall, with dark brown hair and grey eyes; Anna Elizabeth is only 5 feet and 1/2 inch tall, with brown hair and eyes; little Berta has brown hair and blue eyes.

Adom Borger has a much different story. His birth place is listed as Saratov. Often they didn't name the little villages; just the nearest larger city or the District. So, he could have been from Galka. He stood 5 feet 6 inces tall, had a dark complexion, brown hair and brown eyes. He apparently left his family in Russia at the age of 36 and crossed the Atlantic aboard the SS Corsican in February of 1913. His wife,Katherine, 35 and standing 4 ft, 4 inches tall with brown hair and eyes, and daughter Pauline, 11, followed a few months later, May of 1913, on the SS Haverford landing in Philidelphia, PA, then traveling on to Canada. Katherine's father is named as the nearest relative still in Russia, Phillipp Hrasnak (sp) in Saratov so we know her maiden name. Adom was a carpenter. His most recent address was 523 Rosewood Ave. [My Wunsch family arrived from Galka 5 months later, in July of 1913, and lived at 795 Rosewood Ave in Winnipeg, Manitoba.]

Seven years later Adom decides to move his family to the United States. He has a friend John Huget at 366 Cook Ave. in Portland, Oregon whom he intends to join. It is Oct. 29, 1920. All three are refused admission to the US [debarred].

By 1920 Pauline was taller than her mother, having reached 5 feet and 4 inches. She had a medium complexion, brown hair and blue eyes. One year later Pauline tries again, 1921, by herself, at the age of 17, to cross the border and again is refused permission. No explanation is found for this family's inability to enter the US. Descendents of this family should be sought in Canada, as it is likely they remained there.

Henry Borger at 30 came to Canada by way of NY, in April of 1902. The name of the ship is not given. He is a man of 5 feet 5 inches with medium complexion, brown hair and grey eyes. His occupation is laborer. Fortunately when listing the place of his birth we are given Saratov [the district] and then Galka, the village [as usual misspelled Kalga - but all the letters are there!]. Henry's wife, Katie, 25 years of age, also born in Galka, apparently crossed the Atlantic with him in 1902. She is 5 feet 4 inches tall, has brown hair and maybe green eyes. Her sister, Marie Elizabeth Leicher, remains in Galka, Henry and Katie had been living at 449 Salter Ave. in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

They move to the USA.on December 18, 1912, after 10 years in Canada. Katie has another sister, Katherine Elizabeth Bernhart, who lives in Marion, KS and has ? invited them to "come on down". Their purpose in going to Marion is listed as 'permanent' so they are not just visiting.

Borger, Heinrich 25 landed at Halifax, NS on Jan. 27, 1913 on the SS Ryndam destination Winnipeg, Manitoba. Little infromation on the card. Links with card to the right. This is John Borger's grandfather whose parents were David Borger & Catherina Elizabeth Risch. The parents of Heinrich's (Henry's) wife, Katharina or Katerna, were Henry Schmidt & another Katharina. John has more information and can be contacted from the home page - Addresses of Galka Searchers.

Another, younger Henry Borger , at the age of 26 left his wife, Katerna (Katharina) Elizabeth also 26 and his birth village of Galka, Saratov, Russia, to cross the Atlantic. He landed at Halifax, Nova Scotia on Jan. 27, 1913 from the steamer SS Ryndam. Henry was 5 feet 8 and 1/2 inches tall, with brown hair, blue eyes and a pock marked face. [Smallpox vaccine, first discovered by Jenner in 1786, was not compulsory, had significant side effects and probably was not available during the time and at the place where Henry lived in Russia.] His mother, Katarina E. also remained in Galka. Katerna Elizabeth, with a lightly pock marked, medium complexion , brown hair and green eyes, made the trip over 4 months later.. We don't know the name of the ship nor the port she arrived at in May of 1913, nearly 4 months after her husband. The two young people remained in Canada for 3 years. Their daughter, Mary, fair of complexion with brown hair and blue eyes was born in Winnipeg about Dec. 1915 and was six months old when they relocated again, to the USA, May 16, 1917. Father's and daughter's last address in Canada was 564 St. John's Ave, Winnipeg but Katerna Elizabeth was living in Smithers, British Columbia although they traveled together. The three of them were headed for Iliff, Colorado - to join friends or family ? We are not told.

---PS. 6-11-03. A descendent has contacted me. I read the destination as CLIFF, he informed me it is ILIFF, and they went to join a friend of the family. Henry's landing card [as Heinrich] has been united with his crossing card and is in the left column

David Borger, 25, was also born in Galka [listed as a very mangled attempt at Ust-Kulalinka] and arrived on the Ansonia into Quebec on May 30, 1911. Canada was a short layover before he was on his way again on Aug.8, 1911 to St. Thomas, ND to join a farmer named Sam Pile. [I may have this line wrong. There were Galka families named Peil. I am not sure about the word 'farmer'. Best guess. It could be a first name 'Fanner' although I have not heard this name. ] His last address in Canada was 515 Aberdeen Ave, Winnipeg and oddly his nearest relative 'in the country whence alien came' is uncle Gottfried Fritzler also living on Aberdeen Ave. While David is a Borger from Galka, I can not link him to any other families mentioned on this reel. Gottfried Borger is recorded as being born in Kamysin, Russia (down river from Galka) and when he arrived in Portland, Maine aboard the Frankfurt on April 5, 1913 he was 28. His wife, Cathrina, remained behind in Kamysin, Saratov, Russia. Twenty-three months later he wished to go to St. Thomas, ND to join a friend, Christ Gingildt (sp??) but was not allowed to cross into the USA. We lose track of him after this short introduction. His last Canadian address was 645 Boyd Ave., Winnipeg.

Heinrich Borger, age 25, landed in Halifax, NS aboard the SS Ryndam on Jan. 27, 1913. He was born in Russia. His intended destination was Winnipeg.

Henry Borger, arrived in Canada in 1904 at the age of 8 but isn't associated with any family members on his card. He was born in Morgenthal, Russia. His last address in Winnipeg was 757 Aberdeen Avenue. On Nov. 22,1915, after living in Canada for 11 of his 19 years, he wanted to go to Dowagiac, MI to join his Uncle Jacob Piel. He was 5 feet 7 inches tall, with dark brown hair and blue eyes, listed his occupation as a Teamster, and could read and write. He was denied admission; no reason given (it might have been on the back of the card - but we don't have that.) Mary Borger arrived at the age of 34 years in New York City aboard the SS President Grant in April of 1911. Her birth place is listed as Kamyshin, Russia. She apparently stayed in NYC for 3 months and moved into Canada in July of 1911. Her passage was paid by her husband but we have no additional information on him. By Mar. 27, 1920, after 9 years in Canada, Mary crosses the border into the USA accompanied by Constantine age 14, and Adolf age 8. Adolf must have been born in Canada if he is her son. She last resided at 632 Redwood Ave. in Winnipeg. Her married sister, Mrs. Annie Hingle, also lives on Redwood Ave. She is going to Fresno, California to join her sister-in-law, Katherine Settler. Mary stands 5 feet 3 inches tall, has brown hair and blue eyes.
