Note: If you find "They had one child". These words are generated by my genealogical program. There may be more children , but I only entered one.

Background is a round-about in Gettysburg, Adams County, PA, taken 1992

My husband's known documented line begins with Andrew McIlvaine in America.

The first eleven generations are not proved by me to be true, but are a possibility. I have not done enough research to be sure this is our line. I have placed these first eleven generations here only as a guide to help fellow researchers. I have documented from Andrew McIlvaine's son, #42 Moses, who came to Mt. Pleasant township, York County now Adams County Pa., in ca 1752.

This web site has more information on the first eleven generations: http://www.halcyon.com/dianes/genealogy/mcilvain.html

First Generation

*******

1. Gilberto ? MACYLVEYNE, 17G Grandfather, M.

Had a castle in Ayr in 1333. May be father or grandfather of Nigel.

Lairds of Grimmet are dated to a group of charters and legal documents which were recorded in 1529. From that time on the head of the family was formally called the Laird of Grimmet. The last Laird whom either died or left Scotland in 1747, lived at Thomaston.

Child:

2 i. Nigel, M (ca1395-ca1465)

Second Generation

Credited with being the founder of the estates of Grimmet. He is brought into the records in a confirmation of the lands of Grimmet and Attiquin by King James of Alan, son of Gilbert MacYlveyne in June 1529. This record confirms the family existed before Nigel. It is presumed that Nigel was the father of Gilbert. Some say Nigel was the son of Gilbert MacYlveyne.

Children:

3 i. Gilberto, M (ca1450-ca1537)

4 ii. John, M

Patrick married Isobella KENNEDY Lady, 12G Grandmother, F.

Some say Isobel Kennedy Lady is not John's mother but that Patrick was first married to Julianna Shaw. In the Register of Sasines for 1601, Patrick's wife is referred to as "Isobel Kennedy, Lady Grymett". She may have been the widow of Kennedy of Knockdon.

Some list Jane Ann Corry as his first wife.

His will is dated September 21, 1669

He is the John mentioned in 1613 as Johne McIlvane Younger of Grummett in a complaint against John Kennedy "In November last while reposing himself in sober manner with the Kaitchepoole of Maypole, he was there attacked and shamefully treated by Johnne Kennedy of Blairquhan and others...with drawn sword in ane hand and a battoun in the uther he would have slain his pursuer had he not escaped by the providence of God and his awne bettir defence."

John married Juliane SHAW, 10G Grandmother, F, daughter of SHAW, M. Juliane died in 1643.

The Glasgow Commissariat August 20 1643 mentions Juliana Schaw, spouse of John McIlvaine of Grimmet. Her will names daughters Anne and Juliane McIlvaine. Unlike England where the woman's property and wealth became the husband's in Scotland they had equal rights to property and to head families.

Quentin under the new law of 1673, recorded his Coat of Arms with the Lord Lyon King of Arms, Edinburgh. They had been engraved on the Gimmet Castle walls for three centuries. His will dated 2 Aug 1694. and probated January 5, 1699. It mentioned a niece, the daughter of William Cunningham, and his nephews, the young sons of John McIlvane of Grimmet, to whom he willed Upper Grimmet but in a codicil he declared that he no longer owned it, having been sold to pay debts and fines.

In 1660 Quentin married Marion BLAIR, F, daughter of Sir Bryce BLAIR of Dalrty, M.

28. John McILVAINE, 9G Grandfather, M. Born in Ayrshire, Scotland ca 1640.

This is believed to be the line and the line which came to America and from here to the present seems to be fairly accurate.

36. James McILVAINE, 8G Uncle, M. Born in Ayrshire, Scotland on 11 Jun 1688. James died ca 1739 in S. C.

James Mackilwean is believed to be the brother of Robert and Andrew, sons of John McIlvaine of Grimett and Sarah Clark who lived to Ireland. It is believed that he came to America with Robert and Andrew. James was in North Carolina in 1738 settling in eastern North Carolina, his plantation called Tower Hill. He was a surveyor and was prominent in the colony. He married Elinor and they had several children: John, Francis, Margaret, Mary and Sarah. Mary was the wife of the first governor of North Carolina. Richard Caswell. (update from Ila Grey McIlwean White)

He was Justice of the Peace for Chowan in 1739; chairman of the Peace Commission, 1739 and member of the House of Burgesses 1736.

37. Andrew McILVAINE, 7G Grandfather, M. Born on 14 May 1694. Andrew died in 1754.

Came to America from Ireland with brothers James and Robert and were in South Carolina as early as 1732. Robert and Andrew were in PA, by 1738/1740

ca 1713 Andrew first married Elizabeth FINLEY ? SWAN, 7G Grandmother, F.

If her husband married Sarah Finley in 1717 or 1718 these can not all be Elizabeth's children. (from ?) I have left as I have no documentation to move them. some think Sarah and Elizabeth are the same person. I find much disagreement over who his wife/wives really was/were. I can find no documents at present to support any of the ideas presented.

They had the following children:

42 i. Moses, M (1713-1782)

43 ii. John, M (-1774)

44 iii. Robert, M

42. Moses McILVAIN, 6G Grandfather, M. Born in Probably Lancastor County, PA in 1713. Moses died on 10 Oct 1782 in Mt. Pleasant Twp., York County, PA now Adams County, PA.

Land draft - 482a warrant of 2 Dec 1752 and resurveyed 12 Jan 1771 called Strawberry Valley.

That land was situated about 7.5 miles due east of Gettysburg and about 2 miles east-northeast of the village of Bonneauville.

U. S. Direct (or Glass) Tax of 1798. We see that Andrew had a stone mill 48 by 33, a sawmill and a frame barn 55 by 33 and a shop. Also 198 acres with value of $3,400. He had a stone house 40 by 28 and a log kitchen 14 by 12. Brother John had a stone and log barn 60 by 26 and 188 acres and value of $1034. John had a log house 30 by 23 and a smaller structure 11 by 23 with a milk house. Brother Alexander's wife had a small log barn and 73 acres and value of $430. Rebecca had a log house 22c by 22 and a kitchen 15 by 13.

We can see that the McIlvain family was one of the well off families in Mt. Pleasant township during the period 1752 - 1811.

Will was probated in York County.

Received document F-137 that is not the will but the family approving of the administrator. Document dated 20 Jun 1783. Mary is listed as widow and relict of deceased and her two oldest sons Alexander and Andrew are listed and they are all approving of John the other of the sons being the administrator.

In the Inventory dated 10 Jun 1783 it calls Moses the Elder. I see from the signatures that the person drawing up the document adds an e to the name and when John signs the document he does not. From will of son Alexander we can add another bother William.

From these documents we see that wife's name is given as Mary not Margaret and five male children are documented: Andrew, Alexander, John, William and Moses. Since the name Alexander is first introduced here and Margaret Martin's father was Alexander Martin, I can presume that Margaret's name was either Mary Margaret or Margaret Mary and thus was called Mary.

I was sent a gedcom by Mac [email protected] It lists eight children for Moses but shows no documentation. I am listing them and his marriages and dates. I have no documentation on most.

Moses married Margaret (Mary?) MARTIN, 6G Grandmother, F, daughter of Alexander MARTIN, M.

Margaret Martin's sister Rebekah married a John McIlvain, so possibly John was a brother of Moses.

They had the following children:

50 i. Ann, F (1733-)

51 ii. Andrew, M (1736-1811)

52 iii. Alexander, M (1735-1794)

53 iv. Mary, F (1738-)

55 vi. Moses, M (1743-1805)

56 vii. William, M (1745-)

57 viii. Rebecca, F (1750-)

43. John McILVAIN, 7G Uncle, M. John died in 1774.

Not sure if link is correct or not back to father and mother.

John married Rebekah MARTIN, 7G Aunt, F, daughter of Alexander MARTIN, M.

They had the following children:

58 i. Rebecca, F (-1820)

59 ii. UNNAMED, M

COMMUNICATION

Departed this life, on Friday night last in the 74th year of his age, Mr. ANDREW M'ILVAINE (miller), of Mount pleasant township. His remains were, this day, interred in the old burying ground, at the Pines, in Straban township, attended by a numerous concourse of friends and neighbors. Mr. Ilvaine's parents were very early settlers in York (now Adams) county. He served his King in the Provincial army, under General Monckton, against the Indians; and he served his county in the Revolutionary war against Great Britain. It may be truly said of him, that he was a kind husband, an affectionate father, a good neighbor and a respectable citizen. March 4 1811.

Andrew married Mary LARIMER, 5G Grandmother, F, daughter of Robert LARIMER, M & Sarah, F. Born in Lancaster County, PA on 22 Jun 1744. Mary died in Adams County, PA on 27 Jun 1831; she was 87. between 12 Mar 1831( date of will) and 2 Jul 1831 (probate begun).

Have a copy of his will and probate. It lists his brothers Andrew, John, Moses and William. Lists his wife as Rebekah. I presume that both of his children died young. as not in will. some believe that his estate was not completely probated until 1838. forty years seems like an awful long time. There is a document Admon. acct. of the estate of Alexander McIlvain deceased. Filed 25 day March 1795 by Rebeca Mc Ilvain Acting Administrator. Sold land in Borough of Hanover, York County PA for the ME church 1 March 1830

land records indicate that he is the husband of Mary Reisnger

From Moses B. McIlvain's will

"....5th It is my will and I do direct that immediately after my beloved wife's decease, that my real estate shall be sold to the best advantage and the proceeds there of to be divided As follows viz// I will and bequest to the heirs of my son Alexander two hundred dollars to be divided between them share and share alike, which shall be the full amount of his part. and the balance my my real estate to be divided into four equal shares between my sons, George, James H. and John and my daughter Margaret Share and Share alike....." son John McIlvain to be Executor.

The following papers have been found that may be part of Alexander's estate settlement. Calls him late of Mt. Pleasant township. With his father-in-law dying in 1831 he may have gone back to Mt. Pleasant township.

York County 2M p 80 William McIlvain of Baltimore County, Maryland Dr. William McIlvain and Adam Eicheeberger (sp) Esq's of the Borough of York county of York and state of Pennsylvania. Letter of Administration was set and granted to William McIlvain this 23 day of Jun 1834.

Balance in account to be $1784.14. A list of dispersements were made amounting to $703.29 with a balance on hand left after dispersement of $1080.75. Dated 7 Jul 1838 and an added note 7 Aug 1838 copy confirmed will (Some say this may be papers relating to a Alexander McIlvain who died in 1793 in Mt. Pleasant twp.)

We do know that sometime between the summer 1830 and 1840 Alexander is no longer with his family. His last child a daughter was not in the 1830 census but is five to ten in the 1840 Richland county OH census. This may place his death ca 1835. Also I have a document dated 2 March 1846 York County, PA Deed Book 6C p 290 - 300 "...Mary McIlvaine of said county of Richland Ohio who was the daughter of Jacob Reisinger late of the county of York in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania deceased and who intermarried with Alexander McIlvain Sr., now deceased...."

From The Annuals of Richland County, Ohio p 188 "The ARGONAUTS OF 1850"

Over the years since the middle of the last century, many Richland Countians traveled overland and "around the horn" in search of gold in the West. Here is an account of a reunion held years later, by some who had returned.

"Seated at a richly laden table at the Vonhof, Thursday night, were the following residents of Mansfield who crossed the continent in 1850 to the gold fields of California........William McIlvain,....... In the party was a representative of the Mansfield Weekly News who had a special invitation to participate in the festivities...."

"William McIlvain gave an account of a voyage 20 Richland County men had on board the "Philadelphia" on the isthmus route."......

William McIlvain moved to vote a thanks to the three entertainers for their hospitality, which carried unanimously......"

In article it states fourty-one years ago so reunion would have been held in 1891.

They removed to Iowa living in Lineville awhile then buying and coming to the property near the Argo school house, two and one-half miles east of Pleasanton, living there until the death of Mr. Argo March 30, 1898.

William died in Spring Valley Near Pleasanton, IA on 30 Mar 1898; he was 73. Buried in Gammill Cemetery, Hamilton Twp. Decatur Co., IA. Occupation: Cooper, Store Owner, Farmer. In Decatur Co. Hamilton Twp on William Argo's death certificate it states that he was born in Mansfield, OH. William is probably the 5-10 yr old in the Federal 1830 census of the William Burge family, as he was 5 1/2 years old in Nov. 1830, the date of the Census. Did he have a step brother, half brother or a brother; as another boy is 0-5 years old? In the 1840 federal census Richland Co. OH Burge, Wm L. there is a male 15-20 and one male 30-40 and one female 30-40. We know he married on July 19, 1843 in Richland Co. Anna Mary McIlvain and married by George Leiter. L. Wesley Argo in "The Argo Families Revisited", believed Wm. probably 'descended from one of the five Argo brothers who migrated from Delaware westward through Greene County, Pennsylvania, probably the son of one of the unknown brothers of Smith Argo (23-AY)' (I believe probably a brother of Smith by a later marriage.) Possibly lived in the upper portion of West VA near Greene Co., PA or between PA and OH. In Mansfield (Richland County) no records of any Argos are found during 1820-1830. A Smith Argo is found in Chippewa Township, Wayne County, Ohio 1820 Ohio census. "Smith Argo, males one 0-10, two 10-16, one 26-24, females, three 0-10, one 26-45. Argo in his book states Smith Argo was in Wayne County (near Richland County) in 1819 but returned to Greene County, PA where he was in the 1810 and 1830 census. No record of land in Wayne Co., Ohio was found for Smith Argo. I do strongly follow the idea that John Alden Argo was Smith Argo's father or brother. The only way this can be proved or disproved would be to obtain an old old family Bible from the Argo family In 1830 land records of Richland(later Ashland) County, Ohio. "2nd day of March A.D. 1830 we find William Burge and Naomi Burge his wife purchased in Vermilion Twp. 'North part of the East half of the Northwest quarter of Section #11 Township No 21, Range 16 of this Virginia Military District School lands grant ed by Congress for the use of Schools and subject to the regulations and restrictions of the Legislature containing 22 acres 3 roods and 31 1/2 perches be the same more or less'. After William and Anna Mary Argo are married we find land records in Richland Co., Ohio. One dated 13th day of March 1848 "they purchased Lot #2 in Frees Addition, Mansfield from John Free and wife." One dated July 8, 1848 "William Argo and Anna Mary his wife to Ann Winfield and Elizabeth Watson the East half of lot #2 in Frees Addition, Mansfield. Anna Mary signed with her mark. They sold on 4th day of May Anno Domini 1854 The west half of Lot #2 in Frees Addition in Mansfield, Ohio. They are in the 1850 Richland County, Ohio, Mansfield Census.
