When she died, she was blind and toothless and suffered from St Vitus Dance.
Such a hard life. She really did not want to leave Missouri and the trees on
their farm in 1885; but if Wesley thought it best she would go to NE.
If you calculate her age by subtracting 57y 4m 2d from Jan 30, 1893 you get
her birth as 9-28-1836. (Age from cemetery records of Arnold, NE.)
Believe she is listed as Cynthia A age 13 in Tazewell County, VA Census for
1850.
She married Wesley Price MARRS, son of James MARRS & Sarah (Sally) WORKMAN,
12 Nov 1853 in Tazewell County, VA. Born 7 Apr 1834 in Tazewell County, VA.
Died 11 Apr 1910 in Gothenburg, NE His obituary says he died 21 Apr 1911,
aged 77y 17d. Buried in Arnold Cemetery, Arnold, NE.
For more on Wesley Price Marrs go to The William Erskine Marrs Family in
America section on page 51-52
They had the following children:
112 i. Sarah Jane MARRS

114 iii. William Riley MARRS
115 iv. Grisella (Martha) Ann MARRS
116 v. David C. MARRS
117 vi. Ardella MARRS
118 vii. Alice Mae MARRS
119 viii. John Wesley MARRS
120 ix. Bartley MARRS
121 x. Fannie Ethel MARRS
85. Jason Carr TABOR. Born 7 Mar 1840 in VA 11 in Tazewell County, VA
Census, not in 1860 MO. Died 10 Feb 1865 in died young.
Note from Seletha Brown: In John W. Marrs interview I found this note!" Carr
Tabor brought his wife's children, but not his wife who had a very small
baby."-- when they migrated to NE.
Another note mentions John and Bartley Marrs and Charlie Blue swimming in a
pond. Bartley almost drowned and father and the Blue boy saved him. (this
happened in NE)
Could it be possible that Carr Tabor married a widow named Blue?
Another reference says Carrs widow married a man named Blue
86. Elizabeth J. TABOR. Born 16 Feb 1842 in VA. Died Jul 1892 in Arnold, NE.
Buried in Arnold Cemetery, Arnold, NE.
I think she also went by Betsy J. and was 9 in 1850 Tazewell County, VA
Census and Elizabeth age 18 in Grundy County MO 1860 Census. In 1891 she and
children Bartley, Frank and Effie went to NE to mostly care for Aunt
Seletha, who was afflicted with St. Vitus dance and was also blind. They
were there about eight months when she died of what the Dr. called
inflammation of the bowels, we call it appendicitis, in July of 1892. I
believe that she never knew that her husband may not have been murdered, but
may have deserted her.
She first married John W. HUMPHREY, 18 Nov 1860.
He died in the Army during the Civil War.
She second married Augustus Preston MARRS, son of Joseph MARRS & Nancy P.
PRESTON ??, 24 Dec 1865 in Trenton, MO. Born 1842 in Cabell County, VA. Died
after 1912 in OH, KY or WVA. Occupation Farmer in Taney County, MO until he
deserted his family.
When he disappeared his wife waited seven years and then applied for his
pension but she died before she got them. It is believed that Augustus
Preston was murdered. Approximate date of his death determined by pension
application papers.
Note: In the fall of 1996 I sent for his pension papers, they arrived
December 21, 1996. They have proved to be quite interesting. Information
from some of these papers follows.
5 August 1890 Elizabeth J Marrs aged 47 a resident of the town of
Kirbyville, county of Taney, Missouri applies for a pension. the names and
dates of birth of children are listed. Johnny A. born 22 1868, Wm. B. born
April 27, 1871, Howard F. born Aug. 27, 1875, Lely M. born July 23, 187?(may
be a 3) and Charity E. Marrs born Feb 10 1883.
12 September 1890 A. P. Marrs aged 47 a resident of Sheridan, WVA, county of
Lincoln applies for invalid pension. He states wound in the hand.....which
disqualifies him from performing full labor when at work his hand pains him
very bad and causes the loss of sleep. A few months later from Cabell
County, WVA he sends an affidavit to prove he is the one applying.
6 June 1892 Elizabeth J. widow of Augustus P. Marrs now of Arnold, Custer
County, NE applies again for a pension. " My husband 'Augustus P. Marrs'
left his home in Kirbyville, Taney County Mo Feb 22 1885 with his team and
wagon to go to Mountain Grove, Mo for a load of household good for a family
that haft moved into Kirbyville, Taney County, MO. When about 40 miles from
his home we believe he was waylaid by a band of robbers and killed and his
team and wagon & effects stolen as that was the last place he was seen. He
never arrived at Mountain Grove. We have never been able to learn of his
whereabouts "dead or alive". Every effort has been used to find him. Our
marriage relations had always been and was happy nothing to mar our
happiness as I know and firmly believe that if he was alive he would have
been home. Our knowledge is based on facts surrounding the case, our
relationship together, his owning a farm and farming it, his helping a
neighbor by going for his goods. The faith I have in his return if alive ,
on the robbers who infect that county."
30 May 1912 Young, Scioto County, Ohio. Augustus P. Marrs aged 70 is
applying for his pension. It says he was born in Cabell County, VA in 1842.
It also says he lived in Grundy County Mo. four years, Taney County, Mo. six
years, ? County, Kansas four years, Dallas County, Texas seven years and
West VA twenty years. Served in Co D 10 Reg Ky Cav. and Co H 54 Ky Inf.
years 1862 1865 Records show the times he was absent without leave and when
he deserted on Feb 22 1865.
It looks very much like he deserted again in 1885. If he did not desert his
family someone did a pretty good job of stealing his identity. It also
appears from the documents that Taney County, Missouri declared him dead Feb
25, 1890.

In the spring of 1885 Wesley Price Marrs, his family; Rufus Regan Marrs and

train are buried in Arnold Cemetery, Arnold NE. {May be one of two brothers
living in Kansas - from Thomas Marr's obituary.} His death record lists
place of birth as Foscial County, VA. My maps show no such county or town in

Story from Donna Marrs as she remembers her father-in-law telling it:
John lived in his later years on an island (possibly in the Missouri River)
The only way to get there was by ferry. Later the water level rose and
divided the island in half. The Corps of Engineers came in and the island no
longer exists. It was believed that the island belonged to Nebraska. John
was a tall man and had a large tumor on his back. (Donna's husband recalls
visiting him on the island and that he was "hump-backed.") John died in
Nebraska and Donna's father-in-law attended the funeral.
From his obit: He was born in Logan County Va. He was married to Mrs
Elizabeth Snider in Mercer County, MO in 1868. His wife preceded him in
death. Mr Marrs came to Richardson County in 1908 and lived in Barada and
Falls City. The funeral services were in the Barada Evangelical Church.

My only record of him is in the Grundy County, Franklin Twp., 1860 Census
and 1870 Mercer County Census Marion Twp. Was talked about by Effie (Marrs)
Worrell as living in NE. Some old letters say he went to NE in ca 1885.
His ancestor Betty F. Brown of Mullen NE lists his date of birth as 25 July
1856. That would be six months before Nancy Elvira was born. This is
doubtful as Nancy is listed as four in the 1960 census and he is listed as
two. (Grundy County, MO Federal Census)

1927 probably in Picher, OK or Gothenburg, NE.
One relative has her dying in Gothenburg, NE in 1900. Her husband's obit has
his wife alive at the time of his death in 1927. James A. King married Ann
A. Marrs daughter of Thomas Marrs on 8 Oct 1882 from marriage records Grundy
County, MO. Census of 1870 read Milla, census of 1880 reads Mary M. so which
way is right. The census of 1900 for Grundy County, MO states Anna M. wife
of James King born May 1866, age 34, married 18 years, three children with
two living, can read and write, & post office Spickardville, MO. Someone
