Note: If you find "They had one child". These words are generated by my genealogical program. There may be more children , but I only entered one.

The following will be a look at the ancestors and descendants of Thomas

Hall. Richard and I, while on our trip to the British Isles, went to

Lichfield and visited the Leamonsley area and attended the Christ's Church in

Lichfield, on May 14, 1995. We drove through Burton-Upon-Trent but did not

have time to look around. We returned to Staffordshire in September 1997 and visited

Tatenhill, Stapenhill, Branston as well as Burton on Trent.

Hopefully there will be others who search for more

information on the Hall ancestors in Staffordshire, England. Jean also tried

to contact John Hall's (Thomas' brother) family but as of

today have had little response.

This site begins with the grandparents of Thomas Hall. Thomas came

to America; as did his brothers John and George. I believe that you will

know a little more about your roots when you have completed reading the material.

When he died no children are listed. In 1851 census no children are listed. The marriage and children listed are quite a ways from Lichfield where George is listed in the 1851 census as living. Therefore I may not have found the correct George Hall.

On 4 Jun 1848 George married Mary DEAKIN, F, in Sandon, Staffordshire England. Born in England ca 1828. Mary died on 31 Aug 1898 in Decatur County, IA. Buried in Gammill Cem., Decatur County, IA.

15. Thomas HALL, G Grandfather, M. Born in Leamonsley, Lichfield, England on 15 Mar 1836. Christened on 23 Apr 1836 in Saint Michael, Lichfield, Staffordshire, England. Thomas died in Hamilton Twp. Decatur County, Iowa on 19 May 1895; he was 59. Buried in Gammill Cemetery, Near Pleasanton, Iowa, Decatur Co. Occupation: Farmer In Sec. 13/14 Twp. 67 R. 25 Decatur County IA Ca 123a.

They came to America in 1868/69 leaving Liverpool in November 1868 on the ship "Great Western" arriving in New York on January 8, 1869. Thomas took employment on the railroad near a place called Molten, MO. Another reference says Glenwood, MO. They resided there one year and in November they settled in Decatur County in and lived there the remainder of their lives. He had a brother George and John who also came to southern Iowa.

Thomas signed with an X.

On 1 Jan 1863/1865 when Thomas was 26, he married Sarah Jane HIGGOTT, G Grandmother, F, daughter of Humphrey HIGGOTT, M (13 Jun 1817-13 Apr 1897) & Sarah THORNELOE (THORNILOW) (THORNILOE), F (ca 1806-25 Dec 1884), in No Record Has Been Found (? Burton On Trent). Born in Birmingham, England/Bond End, Staffordshire on 3 Nov 1840. The date 23 Oct 1837 from death record and probate. Christened on 8 Dec 1840 in St. Phillips, Birmingham, Warwick, England. mother is Sarah Brown of Bond End. (have record). Sarah Jane died in Spring Valley, Decatur Co., Iowa on 13 Oct 1934; she was 93. Buried in Gammill Cemetery, Decatur County, IA Near Pleasanton, IA. Occupation: Housewife And Goes By "Jane" In America. Lived: In Decatur County From 1871 until Her Death. Went By Jane In America.

*It would look like Sarah Jane's mother was living with her parents at the time of the birth of her new infant. If you recall Francis Thorneloe was enumerated in Burton-Extra for the 1841 census.

Note: Bond End is another name for Burton-Extra township in the parish of Burton on Trent. Other townships are Burton, Branston(e), Horninglow, Stretton, Winshill and part of Stapenhill. The last two were on the east side of the river Trent and fell in Derbyshire. Bond End is very near Branstone and Burton on Trent.

Francis Thorneloe age 60 and a male Sheriffs Office; Sarah age 70;

Oliver Brown 15; Sarah Brown 10; William Brown 8; Augusta Brown age 6.

My English researcher concerning exact date of birth "Don't worry about the discrepancy in birth date; it constantly surprises me that in the early period of registration any except the most educated of parents knew the date of birth. It was one thing for a parish clerk to record the baptism on the day but quite another for parents to remember or even have known the date of birth at the time. Remember we are dealing here with a rural society in an England which didn't even have standard time until the spread of railways made it necessary (i.e. 10.15 am in Burton was not necessarily the same as 10.15 even in the next village and certainly not the same as on the east or west coasts - even this little island has a 15 or 20 minute time difference if measured by a sundial!) You cam imagine the clerk saying, ' What was his date of birth' and the parents saying, 'Well, it was about three days before we harvested the lower field and the day after we'd been to church for Sunday service' or something like that....."

The Census of 1851 has her age as eleven and born in Branstone. She is not found in the 1841 census. Found a listing for her possible christening. A Sarah Jane Higgott Brown is listed as christened 8 Dec 1840 at St. Phillips, Birmingham, Warwick, England. Mother is Sarah Brown. of Bond End. (near Burton on Trent and Branstone) Date of birth listed as 3 November 1840. (Have a copy of this record) No birth certificate found.

Possible found in the 1861 census. If so she is going by the earlier age.

Fo.71, p 27 Market Street, Lichfield, St. Mary

Family Smith, wine merchant, one of the servants was Sarah Brown, aged 24, housemaid, born in Staffordshire (no town given). Researcher checked for the name of Sarah Higgott also in Lichfield.

Nearby family Garratt, hairdresser and perfumer. One of the servants was Sarah Hall, unmarried, 16, house servant, born Lichfield. Most likely sister of Thomas Hall.

Maybe Thomas Hall met Sarah Jane Higgott Brown, through his sister Sarah Hall.

The 1900 Decatur County, Iowa census has her date of birth as October 1835 and she is 64 years old.

The Special Iowa Census of 1905 has her age as 68 and when you calculate that she would have been born in 1837.

The 1925 Special Iowa Census record says she is 89 years old, born in Birmingham, Staffordshire, England and lists her mother as S. J. Higgott and does not list a father.

Her death certificate and probate says born 1837. Her death certificate lists her father as Humphrey Higgott and her mother as Sarah Thornalow. Have copies of both.

He wrote a letter from Red Oak Junction, Montgomery County, March 1 1874 to brother George and wife.

Dear Brother and sister,

I received your letter and was pleased to hear you are it all living and are prospering as I my self cannot complain for I am happy to say I am enjoying good health and have a little more of this world good than when you saw me last. I ham please to hear that Tom is near you an doing well an as some prospect of the old stock not running down as I have something less than a dozen you say If I ad Edward or Anne's address to send it to you I have not got it is some few year since i heard from them father as left Lemonusly and was living with Sarah in Bloxwich he was get a poor old man I have quit wrote to see if I could hear from them as I think if father is still living we ought to try and do something for him as he must be most past work and if I do hear from them I will let you know. I suppose I must now tell you what I am prossessed of I have 90 acres of land 80 of a farm an 10 of Brush, 1 team a pair of Donkey __2 cows, 1 yearling ?4 2 hogs 1 dog and a few chickens I am 4 miles north east of Red Oak we rais god crops out hear we did not do so will a common last season. I raised five hundred bushels of wheat, 700 of corn 125 oats and some potatoes when I have not anything to do at home i can make from four to five $ per day stone masonary in the fall. You must give my love to Tom and Jane Hall then I hope they will do well we wrote twice to Appernose county but never got any answer I hope they have got over the whooping cough, my family ad it last winter I would like to see you all I think I have told you all this time answer this as soon as convenient and Believe me your Respectfull Brother John Hall

John born England born Sept 1838, age 61, lived 34 years in America, born England; Jane D., wife born Sept 1846, age 53 , lived 34 years in America, born England; Willie F., son, born Feb 1886, age 14; and Sadie G., daughter, April 1890, ten years.

On 24 Dec 1866 John married Jane DUTTON CECIL, F, in Penkridge, Stafforshire, England. Born on 6 Sep 1846. Jane died on 16 Jan 1910; she was 63. Buried in Hamilton Cemetery, Near Pleasanton, Iowa Decatur.

Here in America we heard her name was Jane DUTTON. The marriage record says Jane Dutton CECIL.

In nephew Edward Banks letter to America says he contacted Uncle Edward in Lancashire. He was retiring from the police force there. Letter was dated 1898. So contact with him in probably 1896/97

Family of Thomas HALL (15) & Sarah Jane HIGGOTT

31. Annie HALL, G Aunt, F. Born in Leamonsley, Staffordshire, England on 23 Feb 1865. Christened on 1 Apr 1865 in Christ Church, Lichfield. Annie died in Hamilton Township Decatur Co., IA on 20 Apr 1944; she was 79. Buried in Gammill Cem., Decatur County, IA.

Came to America in 1869 with her parents and spent most of her life in Decatur County, IA. She was a midwife practical nurse and was always ready with a helping hand . When she was delivering a baby she would take along a berthing chair. It's seat was in the shape of an upside down U. The women would sit on this with their knees tucked under their chin and give birth to their child.

When Annie died she left no will, each sister received $55.55 and Sarah Elizabeth's children each received $5.55. Extracted from her probate record.

32. Emma HALL, G Aunt, F. Born in Rose Hill, Mining Town, Near Leamonsley, Staffordshire, England on 25 Nov 1867. Christened on 1 Mar 1868 in Lichfield, Christ Church. Emma died in Hamilton Twp, Decatur Co, IA on 25 Apr 1963; she was 95. Buried in Gammill Cem., Decatur County, IA.

Was eleven months old when they left Staffordshire for America. In the early years of her marriage she and her husband spent a few years in Roulo, NE, Minneapolis Minn. and Chicago, IL.

On 6 Nov 1887 when Emma was 19, she married John Bernard (Jack) DONELLY/DONNELLY, M, in Little River, Decatur County, IA. Marriage Book 4 1887-1891 p54 #1806. Born ca 1859. from New York, 28 years old when married. John Bernard (Jack) died in 1927.

They had the following children:

She was the first child in her family to be born in America. Her parents left Leamonsley (now part of Lichfield), Staffordshire, England and arrived in America on January 8, 1869. They came with their two small children Annie age two and Emma an infant. Sarah Elizabeth first cared for the two small children of Robert Newton Leeper, who was a widower. She later married their father.

On 10 Oct 1891 when Sarah Elizabeth was 20, she married Robert Newton LEEPER, Grandfather, M, son of Andrew LEEPER, M (11 Dec 1822-21 Aug 1888) & Rachel Lovett TAYLOR, F (17 Aug 1824-21 May 1882), in Pleasanton, Iowa. Born in Jasper, Pike Co., Ohio on 8 Dec 1864. Robert Newton died in Mercer Co., Mo. on 15 Jan 1932; he was 67. Buried in Hamilton Cemetery, Near Pleasanton, Iowa. Occupation: Farmer And Bridge Builder.

He was six years old when his family moved to Decatur County, Iowa in early 1870. They settled in New Buda Township (Davis City area). Robert was both a farmer and a bridge builder. He worked with his brother building bridges. He was 67 years old when he died of Hodgkin's disease.

34. Clara May (Doll) HALL, G Aunt, F. Born in Spring Valley, Decatur County, IA on 25 Dec 1872. Clara May (Doll) died on 31 Oct 1963; she was 90. Buried in Gammill Cem., Decatur Co, IA.

In Jan 1917 Clara May (Doll) married Wooster V. INMAN, M. Occupation: lived Amidon ND.

Wooster had been married before and had a son George Velaire INMAN who married Blanche Leeper d/o Robert Newton Leeper and his first wife Susanah (Susan Ann) (Susie) Acton. Blanche also had a brother Earl Leeper. George and Blanche INMAN had the following children: Vera Florence, Robert Wooster, Richard Lyle, Russell Foch, Max George and Earl Dean.

35. Elijah T. HALL, G Uncle, M. Born in Spring Valley Decatur County, IA on 12 Mar 1875. Elijah T. died in Spring Valley Decatur County, IA on 12 Feb 1878; he was 2. 2y 11m old. Buried in Dale Cemetery, Decatur County, IA.

36. John HALL, G Uncle, M. Born in Spring Valley, Decatur County, IA in 1879. John died in 1896 in 17y old Spring Valley, Decatur County, IA. Buried in Gammill Cemetery, Decatur County, IA.

Sherman Davis worked for Sarah Jane Hall, after her husband died. John and Sherman Davis were attempting to break a three year old horse to ride. They went out and caught the horse and petted him and calmed him down. They then put the horse in a stall in the barn. John was standing in front of the horse holding its head and rubbing its neck. As Sherman tightened the cinch on the saddle, the horse bolted, lunging forward and pinned John against the manger, crushing John's chest badly. Sherman rescued him and helped him to the house. He died ten days later, one year after his father's death. John and Sherm were best friends and Sherm took it hard. Four years after the accident Sherm married Mary Jane.

In regards to the monuments, I will say that for the children's Eligha on the north side and Louis on the south side. You know we did not know the position when you were here. Instead of the line you chose for the children you may place this.

38. Mary Jane HALL, G Aunt, F. Born in Spring Valley, Decatur Co, IA on 12 Feb 1883. Mary Jane died in Cresco, IA on 20 Aug 1964; she was 81.

On 17 Dec 1900 when Mary Jane was 17, she married Sherman E. DAVIS, M, in Princeton, MO. Born on 25 Aug 1879. Sherman E. died in Kendallville IA on 11 May 1974; he was 94. Buried in Winn Co at Eddy Cemetery.

Added Nov 2010: By 1910 Sherman Davis had his family in ND. The census shows them living in Billings, Sand Creek District 6. Have picture of the four room Sodhouse. Three children in the picture. Veta on horse, Mary Jane holding Sarah Marie with Verna standing. 1915 census has them in Hamilton county, Iowa. The record shows they had been out of the state for one year. The 1920 census has them both in Slope County, East Sand Creek township, North Dakota 5 January and then in Hamilton County, Iowa with Sarah Jane Hall 7 Feb. In North Dakota they live beside Wooster Inman and his wife Clara Hall Inman. From what these census show they went back and forth to ND.

Writes letter to America from 111 Church Street, Bloxwich near Walsall, Sep 18, 1898

Dear Aunt,

Father and mother are in receipt of your most welcome letter of the 12th which they received on Saturday but are veryy sorry to hear of Aunt Mary's death but still they were not so very much surprised as she had obtained such a great age. Mother was very pleased to hear that she passed away so happy. Mother says she should be very pleased to have the opportunity of taking a cup of tea with you some afternoon but then it will be a miracle if she gets the opportunity seeing that you are so many thousand miles away and have been for so many years but she often speaks about you and tells us some little ancedote about when you were in England. Mother and all of us are very pleased to hear that yourself and all the family are well, which if I think about the same with us at present. Mother has not heard anything of Uncle Edward for some time now. We heard nothing of him for a number of years until one of your daughters wrote to my sister Anne nearly two years ago and wished us to try and get to no where he was. So I wrote to the Chief constable of Lancashire to see if he was still on the police force. So he sent us his address and we wrote to him and he acknowledged our letter in a few days so we wrote and told him that you wished to hear from him and sent your address and we have not heard anything since he said in his letter which he sent us that he should retire from the police force as last March and receive a pension for life. Dear Aunt Mother would very much like to no if Uncle John is with Uncle George as she received a letter from Aunt Jane and the two children about three years ago with their photo enclosed but she has not received your photo which you say in your letter you have forwarded. But she relieved the death card of Uncle Tom, which was a Uncle which I never had the pleasure of seeing. Saying that Uncle Edward lives no further away than he does I have never seen him but once and that was only a glance which must have been about 20 years ago so that if I was to meet him in the street I should not know him. Mother would very much like to no if you are still in the farming line. the season her has been almost a record one for hay and grain. Potatoes seem to be rather in abundance but I think they would have been much better if we could have had some rain which you say you have been having so much of. There is quite a water famine in some parts of England more especially in the large towns and the authoritys fear there will be an epedemic if there does not come some rain very soon. Mother and all of us hope that cousin Emma's husband will return safe home again to his wife and family unhurt from the war which seems to be almost settled now. Mother hopes that cousin Anne is quite well as you have not mentioned her in your letter. We are all afraid that Uncle George's suggestion of a trip to England will be a very big undertaking but then there does some very old people cross the Atlantic and I am sure that mother and father and all the rest of us would be very pleased to see him or any of the other relatives which are across the Atlantic. I'm sure that Uncle George must feel the great loss which he has received by the death of his wife after being together for so many years. Perhaps you will be a little surprised that either father or mother are not writing themselves but their eye sight is not so very grand and have asked me to write instead which is rather a big task for me to do as I have not had the pleasure of writing to you before either have I seen you, which I should very much like to do and hoping that you will please excuse the rather rough way in which I have written my letter I should very much like to come to America myself if I could get work when I got there but you see it would be a great risk to come over on chance. as there is not much to stay in England for as competition is so very keen and wages cut down so very low till it take one all their time to make ends meet. That is with being very careful. Enclosed you will find a photo of mine it was taken when I was between 20 and 21 years of age, which has been just over 9 years ago. but still there is n ot so very much alteration but there is a little. Mother says she will let you have our photos in a group as soon as she can and will also try and let you have one with myself and wife and two little boys as soon as I can get them done. One boy is 7 years old next May and the other one 13 moths old this week. We have buried two boys between them. One would have been nearly 5 and the other one just 3 years. One was named Leonard and the the other one Arthur. My sister Mary was married last May to a young man who is a native of a small village near Manchester which is a place called Patricroft and were they are now living. Anne went and stayed a week with them and took her little boy with her which is about 15 months old and she says they are very happy and comfortable. and in the best of health. I must now conclude my letter hoping you will accept my mother and father to be Your Ever Loving Sister and Brother.
