The Maxwell Castle stood guard over
the Solway Firth for over 400 years.
It was made of rich red stone.
The lands of Caerlaverock were
granted to the Maxwells about 1220.
Their first castle was too near the
salt marshes of the Solway
and in the 1270s they started
building the new castle.
It lasted until the Civil War of
1640 when the castle was no longer lived in.
