Smith
Stones
Tippecanoe Township in
section 5. Being regraded and stones to be reset. (Pictures to come
later.)
In the 1850 census we
find living in Tippecanoe Township and on the land where the Smith
stones are found the Thomas Smith family lived. His wife is Margaret
and they have eight children with them. Also Thomas Sr. and his wife
Jane and daughter Eliza J are listed.
Stones that have been
located are:
Jane Smith, who died 27
June 1851, Aged 73 years 2 months and 20 days
Margaret Smith, who died
11 June 1851, aged 38 years 9 months and 13 days.
also an infant who died
in 1851. It is believed that all three died in the cholera
epidemic.
Some believe that they
are related somehow to John Sample who gave the land for the
Sample/Cholera Hill Cemetery a short distance north.
Some have called these
the Mormon stones but I do not believe that they are and that the
Mormon stones are elsewhere and possibly lost.
