My purpose for writing this
now is not to bring more pain to members of the family but to enlighten
others not only to my mothers situation but, also to make you stop and
think. When you get old and suddenly become very ill,
what type of people will you be trusting with your life? Will
you think to ask questions? Will you notice whether they are
paying attention to your past history? When you see your doctor does
he/she go over you medications with you to make sure that if he/she
prescribes something new it will work together with what
you are already taking? Does the hospital doctors and staff
care about the seniors that come through there on Medicare/Medicaid? Or
are you just an expendaple citizen with no purpose in life?
In the midst of the wonderful health care professionals out
there you will find some that are questionable, as in my mothers
case.

A Brief History Darlene was the youngest resident living in
the assisted living quarters in the Hester Home in Benkleman, Nebraska.
Had it not been for her near blindness and the arthritis in her hip,
I'm sure she would have still been living on her own. As it was, the
dangers were to big of a risk for her. During the time she had been
there she had made friends with everyone, including most of the other
residents. The staff all loved her, and her them, they had become
her second family. Kaye, her daughter, works at the facility as the
Maintenance Supervisor, so was there every day to visit and watch over her.
She continued doing her crochet, though her eyesight only allowed
one pattern that she could do by feel for the most part. She had made
several afghans for the staff and their families and had built up a small
nest egg from the proceeds.
Her health was delicate but, not life threatening as long as she stayed on her medications. She had been overweight all of her life but had even managed to lose several pounds while she was there. She had a history of producing blood clots over the past few years. In September of 1999 she had another one. At this point her doctor thought it would be best to put a screen in her artery in order to protect her from the possibilty of one breaking loose one day and going to her heart, thus reducing the dangers of that and any future blood clots. Keeping this event in mind, her story begins. |

| There is a lawsuit pending
on this matter so, I will mention no names. However, there is not
but one hospital in Benkleman, so it is quite impossible not to mention
it. It is also only fair to say, that the hospital nurses and staff
were only carying out orders as they were given. To view the expert's
