"He was educated at Lafayette Academy at Pikeville, and taught school for a time. While attending there, he was appointed teacher in the institution to fill a vacancy for the balance of that year, which was about five months. He afterward taught public school for a number of years and was engaged in farming at the same time. In 1857 he formed a partnership with his brother, Samuel M. and T. J. Wilson and was engaged in business at Pikeville for five years. In June, 1862, the store was destroyed by the Federal soldiers and Mr. McReynolds moved to his farm of three hundred and twenty acres which had been given him by his father in 1848, and has since made that his home."

"During the civil war, Alexander H. and his brother Samuel M. McReynolds' store in Pikeville was burned by the Union soldiers. He later reported he lost seven slaves and a great deal of livestock and grain and was "taken prisoner for awhile." In 1874 he was serving as a trustee of People College."
