Stanley, who had died in the Civil War. Samuel gave his age as 60, and Elcie gave her age as 41. This age for Samuel agrees closely with the date of birth listed on his tombstone (1831). Samuel usually gave his age as much older than he probably was, each time he completed a pension application for himself. It may be that Elcie could remember Samuel's age with a greater accuracy than he could. Perhaps the birth date of 1831 on Samuel's tombstone is very close to the correct date. Asa stated that sometime after this both he and Samuel were attached to Major Cooley's Sharp Shooting Batteries and that while he was there he received a gunshot wound in the right thigh and that he (Asa) helped to carry Samuel off of the field. Elcie gives her age as 50 and is a resident of Walker, Wood Co., WV. She indicates that Samuel was honorably discharged from Co. K, WV Inf. on 11 July 1865. She states that she, as Elcie Johnson, was married to Samuel Jenkins on 10 September 1865 by Maison Wilson. Neither party had been married before.
