1 Feb 1864 - Company K Muster-out Roll dated 2 May 1865, Richmond VA, shows Joseph "discharged for disability Feb 1, 1864." A note attached to te Company Muster Roll dated Dec. 1864, indicates that Joseph was "discharged from the Government Asylum in Washington DC) for the insane and from the service by order of the Secy of War." 24 Dec 1864 - Transferred to Insane Asylum, Washington DC. (This note included as a part of the medical records with the pension file and seems to indicate that Joseph was transferred to hospital in Washington DC, after he was discharged from the service.) (pension file)

11 Aug 1875 - Joseph Jenkins dies at the home of his sister, Catherine (Jenkins) Trader, near Brooksville, Calhoun Co. WV (pension file)

5 Sep 1891 - At the Doddridge Co. WV courthouse, Joseph Jenkins, orphan of Joseph Jenkins, deceased and over 14 years of age, made a motion that James B. Maloney be appointed guardian for said Joseph Jenkins. Able Rogers and Hiram Stull were approved as security for the required bond. (pension file)

12 Sep 1891 - Joseph B. Maloney, age 30, resident of Goose Neck, Ritchie Co. WV, appears before Ritchie Co. Clerk applying for pension benefits for the children of Joseph Jenkins. The children of Joseph Jenkins are listed as: William E. Jenkins, born 7 Dec 1867; Nancy Mariah Jenkins, born 5 Jul 1870; and Joseph Jenkins, born 28 Feb 1875. Maloney states that Joseph Jenkins, Sr., died 11 Aug 1875 near Brooksville, WV, and left a surviving widow who remarried 11 Jun 1878. (pension file)

30 Apr 1892 - Clerk of Ritchie Co., WV certifies that Mary A. Jenkins and Hiram Stull were married 20 Jun 1877. (pension file)

4 May 1892 - A. J. Stanley, (Alpha Jane Stanley) Wirt Co. WV states that she was present as a midwife at the birth of Nancy Mariah Jenkins who was born 4 Jul 1870. (pension file)

4 May 1892 - Samuel Jenkins, age 60, a resident of Walker, Wood Co. WV, and Asa Jenkins, age 56, a resident of Smithville, Ritchie Co. WV, gave statements. They stated that they knew that Joseph was treated for "fits and dropsy" by Drs. Blair and Bowe at Winchester, VA and also at Beverly in Randolph Co. WV. (pension file)

5 May 1892 - Martha Ann Stanley, resident of Cisko, Wirt Co. WV, states that she was a midwife and was present at the birth of Joseph Jenkins on 28 Feb 1875, "as near as she could remember," and that she knew that Joseph Jenkins, Sr. had only the children: William E. Jenkins, Nancy Mariah Jenkins, and Joseph Jenkins. (pension file)

21 May 1892 - Mary Ann Stull, age 48, resident of Deep Valley, Tyler Co. WV states that she was married to Hiram Stull on 20 Jun 1877. (pension file)

1 Jun 1892 - John B. Upton, age 61, a resident of Pullman, Ritchie Co. WV, states that he was a comrade of Joseph in the War, and that Joseph was healthy when he entered the service, but after a while he "broke down and had fit after fit and fall with the fits." (pension file)

3 Jun 1892 - Sarah Jane Lanham, Ritchie Co. WV, states that she was present as a midwife at the birth of William E. Jenkins, son of Joseph Jenkins, and that he was born 7 Dec 1867. She further stated that Joseph Jenkins and Mary Ann Maloney lived together as man and wife until married and until death of Joseph Jenkins and that Joseph claimed William E., Nancy Mariah, and Joseph as his children. 3 Jun 1892 - E. M. Stanley, age 56, resident of Ritchie Co. WV gives statement that Joseph Jenkins claimed as his children, Joseph, Nancy Mariah, and Joseph. (pension file)

7 Jun 1892 - The Clerk of Calhoun County Court certified that Joseph Jenkins and Mary A. Malony were married 6 Mar 1871 by James A. Norman. (pension file)

2 Aug 1892 - Asa Jenkins and A. J. Stanley, resident of Wirt Co. WV, state that Nancy Mariah Jenkins was born 4 Jul 1870 and that she (Stanley) was present as a midwife at her birth. (pension file)

25 Jun 1894 - Alva H. Ayers, Ritchie Co. WV, age 64, gives statement that he had known Joseph Jenkins for about 20 years prior to his enlistment and lived near him a portion of the time. He states that Joseph Jenkins was a "hard drinker at times." (pension file)

21 Jul 1894 - Asa Jenkins, age about 53, residing at Mellen, Ritchie Co. WV, states that he was a brother of Joseph Jenkins, and served in the same unit during the war. Asa said Joseph had something like fits or spasms before the war, but only when he had been drinking. He further states that Joseph was not a heavy drinker. During and after the war, Joseph had fits when he had not been drinking. Asa also indicates that Joseph was badly swollen at times, and that he was present when Joseph died at the home of Isaac Trader. He also states that Joseph and Mary Ann were not married when William and Nancy Mariah were born, but that Joseph claimed all the children as his, and cared for them. (pension file)

21 Jul 1894 - Daniel Eddy, age 64, resident of Mellin, Ritchie Co. WV, states that he first become acquainted with Joseph Jenkins about 1870, but had seen him several times prior to that. He states that Joseph was "puffed up and seemed to have dropsy." (pension file)

30 Jul 1894 - Asa G. Dillworth, of Volcano Junction, Wood Co. WV, age 70, a farmer, gives statement. He states that he knew Joseph Jenkins "from the time he was a small boy." After the service, Joseph "settled down within a mile of here and worked for me...he stayed in the same neighborhood for some two or three years." Joseph and Mary Ann had one child while living close to Asa which died when not more than 8 or 9 months old. (pension file)

20 Aug 1892 - Benjamin Moats, Ritchie Co., WV, states he was 2nd Lieutenant of Co. K, 10th WV Inf., and that he knew Joseph Jenkins when he enlisted in the service and that Joseph Jenkins was in good health at the time, and was "as active as a man of his size could be - he was a large man." He states that after about a year, Joseph began having spasms and fits, and was sent to the hospital, and later had to be discharged. (pension file)

25 Oct 1894 - Dr. W. W. Godding, Supt. of the Government Asylum for the Insane, Washington DC, answered an inquiry from the Pension Commissioner stating that the records show that Private Joseph Jenkins, Co. K, 10th WV Vol., was under medical treatment from 25 Dec. 1863 until 1 Feb 1864, at which date he was discharged, recovered. The disease for which he was treated was epilespy and ?????. 4 Jun 1896 - Dr. John H. White, of Mt. Ayr, Ringgold Co. Iowa, gave statement that he treated Joseph Jenkins when he was in Smithville, Ritchie Co. WV, and soldier lived in Calhoun County, some 7 or 8 miles from Smithville. Dr. White believed that Joseph probably had "kidney trouble and had dropsy." (pension file)

20 Aug 1892 - Henry Gordon, age 35, resident of Wirt Co. WV, stated that he was acquainted with Joseph Jenkins for two years and that he was present at his death on 11 Aug 1875. He further states that he had "helped lay him out also helped in his burial." (pension file)

20 Aug 1892 - Isaac Trader, age 68, a resident of Wirt Co. WV, states that he had been acquainted with Joseph Jenkins for 20 years, and that Joseph Jenkins died 11 Aug 1875 at his (Trader's) house, and that he attended the funeral. (pension file)

21 Jun 1894 - Special Examiner, James A. Davidson, of the US Department of Interior begins a special examination of the case of Mary Ann Stull, who is claiming a pension based on the service of her former husband, Joseph Jenkins. (pension file)

23 Jun 1894 - Mary Ann Stull, age about 50, resident of Deep Valle, Tyler Co. WV, gives a long statement. In this statement she gives the name of her youngest son as Joseph Columbus Jenkins, who was about 6 months old when his father died. She also states that Martha Stanley, deceased, was a midwife at the birth of Joseph C. Jenkins. Mary Ann states that the soldier (Joseph Jenkins) was "raised on McFarlin, near Smithville, Ritchie Co. WV, and continued to live there (I think) up to the time of his enlistment." She also states that Joseph worked for his oldest brother, Enoch Jenkins, Smithville, Ritchie Co. WV, prior to his enlistment. He again lived with Enoch when he returned from the service with the exception of six or seven months when he lived at Burning Springs, Wirt Co. WV. Mary Ann also states that "Isaac Trader, deceased, his sister (Joseph's siter) Katherine Trader, deceased, and myself nursed and cared for him. ...Samuel Jenkins, Walker, Wood Co. WV... and James Jenkins, deceased, all saw him during his last illness." "We lived in the vicinity of Big Bend, Calhoun Co. WV, during nearly all of the time from date of our marriage until soldier died. We lived some of the time on McFarlin." (pension file)

19 Jul 1894 - Henry Washington Freed, age 41, farmer and merchant residing at Freed, Calhoun Co. WV, states that he helped prepare the body of Joseph Jenkins for burial and that he believed Joseph had what they called "dropsy" and that after death, the legs of Joseph "would burst open and water would run from them." 30 Jul 1894 - Samuel Jenkins, age about 70, farmer, residing near Walker, Wood Co. WV, gives statement indicating that Joseph & Mary Ann had at least one child before they were married, but that Joseph claimed the three children as his own, and cared for them. Samuel states that Joseph died on Leading Creek in Calhoun Co., and that he (Samuel) lived close by him at the time he died and was present at his death and helped carry him to the grave. Samuel states that he and his brother served in the service together.

Late 1894 - James Davidson, special examiner, completes his case work and sends a report along with a summary to the Interior Dept. He states that Samuel Jenkins stands fair for truth and veracity, but his statements under oath are to believed, however, "he is a great talker." He testified with apparent candor and I believe his statements in this case reliable."

Davidson further indicates that "Asa Jenkins, a brother of the soldier and also a brother of deponent just referred to (Samuel) has served a term in the penitentiary for an alleged theft. He is considered of rather doubtful repute. His testimony was given with perfect frankness and I believe he was in the main truthful."

"Eli M. Stanley is of fiar repute ... I am inclined of the opinion from experience in his own claim that he is not to be relied upon." "....he is uninterested in this claim and gave his testimony candidly."

"Original deponents, Isaac Trader, Sarah Jane Lanham, and Martha A. Stanley are all deceased as are also Enoch Jenkins, soldiers brother and Abraham Freed mentioned by the Claimant."

"Soldier had the fits prior to enlistment, but it appears that they were not the cause of his death and it seems very doubtful whether a factor therein. Soldier evidently died from dropsy of which there is a record of treatment in service." (pension file)

19 Oct 1896 - Nancy Mariah Jenkins, age 26, and Joseph Jenkins, age 21 years. both resident of Deep Valley, Tyler Co. WV, indicate they are heirs of Joseph Jenkins. (pension file)

16 Dec 1896 - William Jenkins, age 24, a resident of Reedy, Roane Co. WV, states he is the son of Joseph Jenkins who was a member of Co. K, 10th Reg. WV Inf. (pension file)

3 Apr 1897 - Jacob Myers, age 75, a resident of Central Station, Doddridge co. WV, gives statement that he was personally acquainted with Joseph Jenkins for about two 2 years when they were in the same Co. and Regt. during the war. He stated that he saw Jenkins have several "fits" whlle they were in the service. (pension file)

6 Apr 1897 - Nancy M. Jenkins, now Rogers, indicates she is daughter of Joseph Jenkins of Co. K, 10th WV Inf. (pension file)

9 Oct 1899 - A postcard is addressed to Mr. A. M. Rogers, Deep Valley, WV (Note this may be the husband of Nancy Mariah Jenkins) (pension file)

16 Dec 1916 - Mary A. Stull, age 73, resident of Deep Valley, Tyler Co. WV, appears before the court in Tyler Co. WV, and states that she was born 7 Dec. 1853 in Cincinnati, Ohio, and that she was formerly the widow of Joseph Jenkins. She states she was married under the name of Mary A. Maloney near Big Bend, WV by Rev. Norman. She states that neither she or Joseph had been previously married. She later married Hiram Stull, near Harrisville, WV, and he died 16 Dec 1910 near Deep Valley, Tyler Co. WV. Hiram Stull did not serve in the Civil War. (pension file)

26 Mar 1918 - William E. Jenkins, age 52 years, residing near Deep Valley, Tyler Co. WV gives statement for Mary A. Stull. (pension file)

6 Apr 1918 - Archie bond, age 36, residing at Deep Valley, Tyler Co. WV, states that he was present at the funeral of Hiram Stull and knows that his death occurred on 16 Dec 1909. (pension file)

1 Apr 1931 - Congressman Underwood writes to Pension office to state that Nancy Jenkins Rogers had died leaving a child, Allen G. Rogers. He asks if Allen is entitled to a pension.

10 Apr 1931 - Letter from Pension Commissioner, indicates that Mary A. Stull is living at Mechanicstown, OH, and was receiving a pension. He also advises that the soldiers child, Nancy, mother of Allen G. Rogers, had no title to pension in her own right as soldier left a widow who is now pensioned. He also advised that pension rights to not extend to grandchildren. (pension file).
