Alfred was born in Vigo County, Indiana, in
1839, then moved across the Wabash River to Darwin, Illinois, in Clark County. He was living in Darwin when he married his first wife, Mary Albina, May 5, 1857
and when he joined the Illinois Infantry, Feb 13, 1864. He drove a supply wagon
in the Civil War and was wounded when crossing the Chattahoochee River north of
Atlanta, July 18, 1864. He married his second wife, Elydia Fuller, in Darwin,
November 18, 1867 and his third wife, Susan Roe, in Forrest City, Arkansas,
December 3, 1882.
He lived in five states: Indiana, Illinois,
Texas, Mississippi, and Arkansas. He had three wives and nineteen children.
Alfred died at his home in Ione, Arkansas,
February 22, 1902.
